Welcome back to term 4. This is one of the busiest in the school calendar and provides lots of opportunities to celebrate school life. It is an especially important term for our year 6 students as they work through their final term of primary school. Cheers to our students Congratulations to Sophie from S2 Lester, first prize in the Granny Smith Festival colouring competition.

Amazing success for Yeleena in S2 Lewis at the Australian Open Short Track Skating Championships who achieved an overall fourth. The event is open track speed skating with skaters from all over Australia and New Zealand competing in individual and relay events. Yeleena competed in the Midget Girls Division with a result that highlighted her athletic talent and sportspersonship. Finally a further accolade for our Wakakirri Dancers with the announcement of the National Environmental Award. This award acknowledges both their story line and the use of costuming and set to promote strong environmental messages. Well done! Building Update Pool The pool upgrade has commenced and work is expected to be completed by August 2020. The work at the moment involves removal of the existing pool and structures as well as location of services such as power and gas. Some services will need to be upgraded to meet the requirements of the new build. The Lovell Road Carpark will remain closed during the build. Community A reminder that our Wednesday coffee van will be located in Brabyn Rd near the Kiss and Drop Bay from 8.00am. P&C meeting will be held in week 4, Wednesday 6 November. This meeting will be an AGM for office holders for 2020. The P&C and school will host a school disco Friday 1 November in the school hall. Notes and information in relation to the event have been sent home and updates will be communicated through Skoolbag. On Tuesday we celebrated Korean Day as a school and a big thank you to Mrs Deborah Kim and Mrs Eun A Park for their preparation of the students. The event highlighted the commitment and talent of the students. Kindergarten 2020 orientation begins this week. The sessions are planned to familiarise our new students and their families with school. Learning Stage One have an excursion this week they are off to the Powerhouse Museum at Ultimo. The museum will provide them an excellent opportunity to experience a trip back in time. The students have been exploring change in class and the Powerhouse will allow them to view changes in many areas of life including travel and transport.

Stage Two are heading to the Blue Mountains next Tuesday and Wednesday. Their trip will include a Jenolan Caves tour. This is a valuable learning experience that will provide opportunities to engage in history, geography and environmental science. I am looking forward to being part of the excursion. Swim School commences on 28 October for year 2 and will run for two weeks. Thank you to the Ms Hardy for organising the sports Gala Days – Wednesday this week West Tiger NRL Gala Day; Paul Sironen Rugby 7’s and Basketball to follow later in the term. The school choir will perform on Thursday evening at the Opera House in The Ryde School Spectacular – many thanks to Ms Limburg and Ms Murphy. The preparation and rehearsals for this event require a considerable commitment from students, staff and families. Staff News This week’s professional learning focused on digital technologies, and design and production elements of the new science curriculum. The new syllabus was implemented this year and teachers are continuing to expand their understanding of content and skills. Two staff members will attend a workshop, Natural Teacher next week at Field of Mars to deepen content understanding of Living World and Digital technologies. The workshop will investigate ways of integrating learning in nature, fieldwork, data collection, games and the authentic use of technology to create learning experiences that are engaging, support cross curriculum priorities and contribute to quality learning outcomes. The workshop examines current research into the significant value of learning in nature and how this can lead to improved student wellbeing. Beginning teachers continue their workshops on Wednesday mornings with Mrs Bashinsky, these workshops will focus on consistency in teacher judgement, assessment and reporting and how to provide information to colleagues as the students’ transition to new classes in 2020. School executive are continuing with 2020 planning and classes are currently being staffed and student placement is being planned and discussed.

Reminder - Tell Them from Me Semester 2 Parent Survey This Term our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, iPads, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between 26 August and 25 October. Although participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much appreciated. The survey window will close on Friday 25th October.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au. To access the survey for our school go to: http://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/d3862

The survey is available in 23 languages.
