Dear Parents and Caregivers Just two weeks left as we rush towards the end of term three, but still lots going on. Last week many of our senior students took part in the NZ Aims Competition which has become a huge event in our region. Unfortunately, we did not come home with a medal this year but came close to making finals in many of the events in which we were entered. It is fantastic that a school of our size can compete so strongly against schools with more than 1500 year 7 and 8 students to select from. I am very proud of all our competitors and know you gave everything you had as you took part. I have had wonderful feedback from other schools and the community about the maturity and sportsmanship shown by Pongakawa students. A huge thank you to Jaz Reid for her management of the teams this year. Special thanks to the other teachers and to the wonderful coaches and parents without whom sport at our school would be very much the poorer. I think we have established a platform for next year and we have already begun to look forward to see ways we can build and grow for next year. We have an enormous array of lost property stored in our cupboard at present (to the point of overflowing). If your child seems to have mislaid items I can almost guarantee they will have been left at school. It makes thing so much easier to return items if things are named, however, this does not appear to be the norm for us. If your child is leaving things round at school and it seems to be a habit discuss it with them let them know at even a young age they are accountable for their clothing. I know just how costly it is to replace things and it is especially annoying if the gear being lost is something they begged you to get them in the first place. This is something we reinforce at school on your behalf and we share the annoyance you have in this. Next term I will send out the material for those of you who have students in years 5 – 8 who are interested in purchasing a Chromebook. I have been able to secure some excellent pricing and the model chosen is proving to be very robust and reliable. Remember, there is no pressure at all to buy one of these and it is entirely a decision for you as parents. Your child will be provided with a device to use at school when they require it in any case. For those who purchase one they can of course take them home each day. Lastly, I have made the decision to postpone our open night at the senior level until early next term. This will enable staff who have been involved with NZ Aims, camps and the like to spend a little more time preparing for this night. In addition, the students of the block always play a key role in the evening and many have not spent much time on the campus over the last few weeks. We will advertise this for you in the first week back, but in the meantime should you wish to know more or have specific questions about why the senior journey at Pongakawa gives the greatest chance of success, drop in for a chat. Yours in teaching Craig Haggo Principal

Enviro News Tip of the week:

Take shorter showers We all love the feeling of a nice, hot shower, but five minutes is really all we need. Shaving even one minute off of the daily shower will save nearly thousands of litres of water every year, which translates into big savings on the water bill; and it’s better for the planet.

Health Check - IMPORTANT Please check your child/ren for head lice.

We are having constant reoccurrences which need to be addressed. Treating with recommended treatments and combing through the hair with a fine toothed comb is essential. Retreatment is meant to kill any surviving hatched lice before they produce new eggs. For some drugs, retreatment is recommended routinely about a week after the first treatment (7–9 days, depending on the type of treatment used. Note that My Pharmacy in Te Puke also gives our school 10% discount for treatments as well.

Worming children and adults Worms in the body block our digestive track, rob us of nutrients and stop the digestive system from functioning. Tapeworm is not the only worm that affects our digestive system, there are several types of worms that can cause problems, including whip worms, thread worms, hook worms and round-worms. Some symptoms may include: An itchy bottom, general irritability and behavioural changes, trouble sleeping, or restless sleep, sometimes resulting in bed-wetting or a sudden lack of appetite. How infections can occur: Walking barefoot in the garden, playground or any infected soil; for example, hookworm larvae burrow through the skin of bare feet. Ingesting worm eggs through eating fruits, vegetables, grains, fish and meat contaminated with roundworm or whip worm. Washing fruits and vegetables with contaminated water. Transfer of the parasitic worms from pets to owner. Coming in contact with the soil that has been contaminated with human faeces from an infected person. Not washing hands with soap and water after defecating. Contact your local pharmacy to discuss worming treatments.

Lost Property Lost Kathmandu Puffer jacket. Black. Has a distinctive fern embroidered on front bottom left hand side. If found please return to school office.

AIMS This year we had 35 students competing in the Aims Games. We entered 3 sports this year that we had never entered be-fore. All students enjoyed the experience of competing in such huge a competition and meeting a whole lot of new friends. We would like to thank all parents who assisted in co-ordinating children and provided transport, coaches and managers who contributed to making this such a great experience for our students. Also thank you to Miss Reid for all the extra hours you did to ensure we were entered and organised throughout the week.
