This week, we acknowledged the start of Lent with lots of activities for the children. Years 4 to 6 gathered together for a beautiful Ash Wednesday Service in St Mary’s. Thank you to Fr Shaun for leading the service. Every Thursday during Lent, from 3.45 – 4.15pm, Mr Stacey invites you and your children to reflect on the Stations of the Cross at St Mary’s. This is very important for us all during Lent as it helps us to prepare for the events of Holy Week and Easter. Either he or another member of our staff will lead the reflection. It has been excellent to see so many bags of clothes and other items come into school that have been donated as part of our EcoKids drive. The school earns money for every kg and through clothing recycling, we have reduced the amount going to landfill and damaging our environment. Next week is Book Week and this year’s theme is ‘Reading is my Superpower’! Children will have the opportunity to work on their own short story which will be published in the very first book written by St. Joseph’s students. The book will be on sale once it has been completed. Year groups from Reception to Year 6 will visit the Chelsea Library, there will be many competitions taking place and lots of new reading opportunities across the school. World Book Day is on Thursday 5 th March and children are invited to dress up as a superhero! WRWA Workshops The WRWA (Western Riverside Waste Authority Recycling Facility) visited the school to lead workshops with the children this week. The workshops were all about saving our planet, recycling and finding uses for things instead of throwing them away. The children loved the workshops and participated enthusiastically. The presenters thoroughly enjoyed working with the children and were impressed by how knowledgeable they were. Food, Glorious Food! Children are really enjoying the new lunches provided by our new catering company! With a range of delicious meals, salads and desserts provided every day, there is something tasty for all. ‘The new lunches are great! Everyone loves them.’ said one child. Year 2 have just started their topic on Florence Nightingale. Florence Nightingale is famous for her nursing work during the Crimean War. She changed the face of nursing from a mostly untrained profession to a highly skilled and well-respected medical profession. The children created fact files to show who she was and what she did.

Attendance

House Captains invited the winners to join them in the Heart of the School for the official unveiling of their House Mottos this week. With so many eloquent entries, it was a tough competition. Congratulations to the winners and well done to all those who entered.

This week, we celebrated Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent, which is 40 days, not counting Sundays, of fasting and repentance prior to the celebration of Easter. During the service on Wednesday, we received the sign of the cross on our foreheads using ashes. The ashes represent mourning and repentance.

Year 2 Congratulations to the Environment Team who have worked so hard to help St. Joseph’s win a Gold award by the Woodland Trust! The award was given to the school for getting involved in green activities including visiting a local woodland, reducing carbon emissions and recycling!

The Green Tree Schools initiative, which has seen more than 12,000 schools sign up since it was launched in 2008, offers the opportunity to bring the great outdoors, wildlife and green issues into the classroom.
