This is an extract from the results sheet of the Ten Pin
Bowling Session on 10th January, where Sylvia Law achieved
an amazing score of 136, which not only beat all the Ladies,
but also all the Men on the day and is the highest Ladies
score in 5 years of bowling. Well done Sylvia!
Circle Dancing

your News Year’s Resolution? If you are
struggling to keep your New Year’s
Resolution, you know the ones, do more,

the month from 10.00 a.m. - 12 Noon. No need for a partner,
you don't even have to know how to dance. First session free.

GROUP NEWS
FILM
GROUP
Angela Barnes reports: We had a good turnout to enjoy our first film of the year, The Greatest Showman. As expected, it brightened up a chilly winter afternoon and most people enjoyed it. Our term will run to April and these are our films for the next few months:
February The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. March – Lady Bird April – Manchester by the Sea.
New members are welcome. We have plenty of space in the Salvation Army Hall in South Woodford and we are a friendly group. Phone me or email for more details.
Spanish Conversation
Sorry to report that this group is now closed.
We thank Veronica Bouffard for running the
group for as long as she did for our U3A.
Trains, Boats
and Planes Enthusiasts
Richard Moules would like to
extend an invitation to any U3A
members to join the group on their
next outing which will be to the
Musical Museum at Kew Bridge on
Thursday 13th February. The museum contains one of the
world’s foremost collections of automatic musical instruments,
and is one of London’s lesser known gems!
We will meet at the WESTBOUND (i.e. Lower George Lane)
entrance to SOUTH WOODFORD station and leave promptly at
10:30 a.m. to travel to Stratford where we will take the
Overground to Gunnersbury and then a short bus ride, so bring
your Freedom Pass. No booking, just turn up!
Entry to the museum costs £10.00 for concessions (payable on
entry) and there is a café for light refreshments before our
guided tour at 1.00 p.m. There is a well stocked gift shop!
OUTING DETAILS
Dennis Severs House
Sue Bloom advises. For those attending
Denis Severs House on 27th February,
we will meet at the entrance to the
Underground station at 10.45 a.m. at

numbers for this outing and would appreciate payment at the
next meeting in February.
98% of the time I am right. Why worry about the other 17%?

THEATRE NEWS
Message in a Bottle
Message in a Bottle is the
spectacular new dance-theatre show
choreographed by the fabulous Kate
Prince to the iconic hits of 17 time
Grammy award -winning artist
Sting, including ‘Every Breath you
Take, Roxanne, Walking on the Moon, Fields of Gold,
Englishman in New York and Shape of my Heart’.
With a mix of exhilarating dance styles, dazzling footwork and
breath-taking athleticism set to the music of Sting, Message
in a Bottle tells a vital and uplifting story of humanity and
hope. A village alive with joyous celebrations is suddenly
under siege. Everything changes forever. Determined and
daring, three parted siblings step out on their own
extraordinary adventures.
Showing at the lovely Peacock Theatre, this is definitely a
show for dance enthusiasts. I have tickets in the stalls valued
at £65.00 for £52.00 on Sunday 8th March 2020 at 6.30 p.m. I
will be taking cheques at the January meeting.
Leopoldstadt
On Thursday 23rd April
at 2.30 p.m. at the
Wyndhams Theatre.
Vienna in 1900 was the most vibrant city in Europe, humming
with artistic and intellectual excitement and a genius for
enjoying life. A tenth of the population were Jews. A
generation earlier they had been granted full civil rights by
the Emperor, Franz Josef. Consequently, hundreds of
thousands had fled from the Pale and the pogroms in the
East, and many found sanctuary in the crowded tenements of
the old Jewish quarter, LEOPOLDSTADT.
Tom Stoppard's new play, is an intimate drama with an epic
sweep; the story of a family who made good. It was not to
last. Half a century later, this family, like millions of others,
has re-discovered what it means to be Jewish in the first half
of the 20th Century.
LEOPOLDSTADT is a passionate drama of love, family, and
endurance. It is Stoppard's most humane and heart-breaking
play. I have tickets in the stalls valued at £75.00 for £49.50,
ready for collection at the April meeting and will be taking
bookings from the February meeting.
Carousel
A date for your diary:- Thursday 20th August
2020 at 2.15 p.m. CAROUSEL at Regents Park

There cannot be a crisis today. My schedule is already full.
OUTINGS NEWS
Dick Whittington
From Sylvia Law: A reminder to those
members who have booked the visit
to Brick Lane Music Hall at 443,
North Woolwich Road E16 2DA to see
Dick Whittington, the pantomime for 'grown ups ' on Friday 7th
February 2020. We will be going to the lunchtime performance
and if anyone has special dietary requirements please let me
know ASAP. There is a fully licensed bar. The doors will open at
12.15 p.m. with the 3 course lunch being served from 1.00 p.m.
and the show starting at 2.30 p.m. finishing approximately at
4.45 p.m. No tickets are produced by the theatre, you just turn
up and will be shown to reserved U3A tables.
Please note I do not have any influence over the seating
plan. There is a small car park, which has always had spaces in
the past, and the nearest station is Pontoon Dock on the DLR,
with a slow 10 to 15 minute walk. Turn right out of the station
and walk towards the main North Woolwich Road, until you
come to a large roundabout, cross the roundabout and the
theatre is a little way down on the left in a closed Church. Their
website address is www.bricklanemusichall.co.uk
Stationers’ Hall and Estate. [
Sue Bloom reports: On Wednesday 4th March
we have a guide taking us around the
Stationers’ Hall and Estate. The tour starts at
11.30 a.m. and lasts for about 75 minutes
followed by tea, coffee and biscuits at Stationers Hall. The
nearest station is St. Pauls and we are meeting at the Church of
St. Martin Ludgate Hill. Hopefully no rain this time. The cost is
£10.00 per person which I understand is donated to charity. I can
take up to 40 people but must give them notice. If you are
interested please see me at the February Meeting
MEMBER FEEDBACK
Looking at Art and Culture
John Lawrence feedback. About a dozen of the group came along to The National Portrait Gallery. We had an entertaining coffee break and then did a self guided look around. Fascinating to
see the photos of the icons of the sixties then we moved on to the 19th century and saw a portrait of Stormzy juxtaposed between rather formal 19th century males.
Then the group went along to the" Portrait of the Day" talk by the gallery staff. That day it was about the portrait of Anne Boleyn, which was a copy, by an unknown English artist and we were given a detailed history of her life. A remarkable place, so if you are interested in going there make sure you go before May this year when it will close for a major refurbishment lasting about 3 years. We are visiting the Science Museum for an Exhibition on "Ciphers & Cyber" on Monday 17th February.

QUIZ RESULTS
WWU3A Quiz Lee Ward comments: Crumbs,
how formidable sitting on the
stage of the Memorial Hall on
20th January, looking down at
102 very keen quizzers. With
the answers before me, my pen ready to mark and with the
support of Jan and Peter I took a deep breath and faced the
challenge. It became even more daunting when our
unbelievably competitive members started querying the
answers with one quizzer having a long theological discussion
with the Quizmaster! A huge amount of organising by Sylvia
and her team together with equal organisational skills of the
Quizmaster made the afternoon great fun.
Chairman adds: We also had 3 diligent scorers, plus well
needed tea/coffee and biscuits prepared by our refreshment
team and a free raffle. The quiz winners were Table 5 with 104
points, followed by Team 1 (my table) with 103 points and
Table 14 with 102 points. The winning members of Team 5 were
Ann and Roy Childs, Mary and David Martin and Jenny and
Robert Wallis. Well done to all the winners.

Driverless Vehicles
At the Science Museum. You're driving a car
and the brakes have failed. Do you hit and kill
an old person, or a child?. This is a sample of a
difficult moral dilemma in an interactive
experiment at Science Museum's display on driverless vehicles. It's
these decisions that future driverless cars may have to make. Until
October 2020. Free admission
Email Advice Sometimes when we send an email to a group
of people, it is useful to have all their
addresses showing so that a “conversation”
might be had between senders and recipients. If the group is
small and everyone in it knows everyone else, this is usually
acceptable. However, some of our groups are rather large and
this can result in a huge list of addresses showing before the
meat of the message is reached. So, when sending group emails
can you please send them “blind”. This entails entering the
names in the line headed “bcc” and putting one name, usually
your own, in the “To” line. This practice will also help to protect
the recipients from possible viruses, spam etc.
U3A Cruising

2020 ‘Exploring the Capitals of the Low Countries’ and on
‘Braemar’ for 11 nights from 22nd September 2020 ‘Exploring

Southampton. Any Members wishing to join them on these
cruises should initially contact Elizabeth Hodgson direct
Whipps Cross Hospital Whipps Cross Hospital is one of the first six hospitals to receive £400 million for a massive upgrade and redevelopment. The redevelopment of Whipps Cross is a once-in-
a-lifetime opportunity to design a new hospital.
All - Hallows-by-the-Tower
This is the oldest bit of church anywhere in
central London. It's an Anglo-Saxon arch dating
to the 7th century. By the time the Tower of
London was built, the arch could claim 400
birthdays. At the top those thin slabs are
Roman tiles, scavenged from derelict buildings of still earlier
centuries. The arch was revealed during the second world war,
when a direct hit on All-Hallows-by-the-Tower flattened most
of the church walls, but brought this long-lost treasure back to
light. It’s well worth the time if you're visiting the Tower of
London or in that part of town for other reasons. FREE ENTRY.

POEMS FOR 2020
Jazzing Things Up
Jazz. Jazz Jazz. What is this thing called Jazz?
Is it trad, is it mod, is it cool?
If I study very hard I’ll learn it all in school.
Riffs and slides, twelve bar blues and glides.
Scat singing, Boogie Woogie, Beebop. I’m proud I know them all
For I’ve got tuneful rhythm and I’m really on the ball.
Syncopation, Improvisation, Exhilaration, and Scinttilliation
Jazz is all these things and extremely groovy too
So let’s explore and then adore, to put new life in you.

JUST JOKING
I learnt to make to make ice cream at Sundae school. My cow doesn't produce milk. He’s an udder failure! The fight between two pencils ended In a draw. I arranged a puppet show, or at least I had a hand in it. I had a belt with a clock on it. It was a waist of time. This chicken was staring at a lettuce. Chicken sees a salad.. The beekeeper gave away all her bees. They were free-bees. What do you give a sick lemon? Lemon-aid. I dreamt I had a horse that went out after dark. It was a nightmare Don’t swallow a dictionary. It'll give you thesaurus throat. I had a dream last night that I was a brush. I swept really well.
AND FINALLY. ..

About Gift Aid Gift Aid is a UK government scheme that enables registered charities to claim the basic rate tax that you have paid on this donation. By being eligible and agreeing to Gift Aid, this donation will increase in value by 25% (at current rates) so for every £10 you donate under Gift Aid, the charity will receive £12.50 … but it won’t cost you a penny more! To be able to donate under the Gift Aid scheme you must be a UK taxpayer and you must have paid an amount of Income and/or Capital Gains tax which is at least equal to the amount of tax reclaimed by all charities on all the Gift Aided donations you make in any tax year (April 6th one year to 5th the next). Please notify the Membership Secretary if you wish to cancel this declaration, change your home address or you no longer pay sufficient tax on your Income or Capital Gains. If you pay income tax at the higher or additional rate and wish to claim additional tax relief due to you, you must include all your Gift Aid donations on your Self-Assessment Tax return.
