A Note From The Pastor Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perse-verance the race that is set before us. Hebrews 12:1 When I hear these words from scripture I am reminded of my grandfather, his patient and kind ways and that he taught me what it is like to be a gen-tleman. I am reminded of Hazel and Josie, two saints who taught me about assurance and the peace that passes all understanding. I am reminded of pastors such as Doc Klingle and James Lee Riley that taught me so much about the faith and what it means to be a pastor. In November we will celebrate All Saints’ Day. We will read the names of the saints who were members of First United Methodist Church that died in the past year. As we read their names we will remember the impact they had on their family, their friends, and their church. This is one of my favorite hymns; it reminds me of the saints who have gone before me, who have had an influence on my life. For all the saints, who from their labors rest, Who thee by faith before the world confessed, thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest. Alleluia, Alleluia!

Who are the saints in your life? Who are the saints that helped to form you into the Christian you are today? Remem-ber them and give thanks to God for their impact! Peace,

A Note from the Associate Pastor

“When God began to create the heavens and the earth— the earth was without shape or form, it was dark over the

deep sea, and God’s wind swept over the waters— God said, ‘Let there be light.’ And so light appeared. God saw

how good the light was. ” ~Genesis 1:1-4a

Have you ever thought about how quiet it must have been before those first words of creation? “Let there be

light.” With those words God broke the silence over the waters and declared that God is here, active and creating.

Those words were a momentous occasion; they shaped the very nature of reality. Before those words there was end-

less possibility. There was possibility for good or for evil, anything and everything. After those words, there was only

one possibility...light. With each word uttered by the voice of God, the world changed and formed. Life was created:

birds, fish, plants and animals. Everything we see, hear, taste, touch, and smell was created simply by God’s voice

breaking through silence.

The terrifying truth is that our voices have a similar ability to reshape our world. As beings created in God’s

image, we too have the power to break silence. With each word we make the choice to either lift up or tear down

those around us. Ephesians 4 warns us “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for

building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” It is my hope that the words we choose to

use are the words of Christ - words of love and service-conveying grace. May the words that cross each of our lips

reshape the world as God has done: with peace and joy, with life and hope, and with loving kindness. Amen.

Thanksgiving meals are also delivered each year to those who are homebound and to poor families in the Nacogdoches

area. In order to provide the necessary amount of food, we need six volunteers who will agree to cook a turkey and de-

liver it to the gym at Sacred Heart by noon on November 23, 2015. We also need volunteers who will help deliver the

meals in the afternoon (2 – 4 pm) on November 23. Everyone is invited to join the Community Choir which will re-

hearse on Sunday, November 23 at 3:00 pm at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. If you would like to participate in this

mission of sharing during the Thanksgiving season, please email [email protected] or call Sharon Bright in the

Church Office (936) 564-8308. May God bless you and keep you!!!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…At least it has been if you have been in any store. The first Sunday of Ad-vent is November 29 and by then the church will be decorated as well. The Worship Committee will be decorating the Sanctuary and other areas of the church on Sunday, November 22. If you could help that would be great! The Worship Committee will provide lunch at noon, and then we will get to work! If you have questions contact Caryl Hall, 936-560-3322.

Volunteers needed for Nacogdoches County Christmas Blessings This year’s event will be held at the Expo Center on Wednesday, December 16

th. Love INC, Toys for Tots, Empty

Stocking, and other organizations have united in this event to qualify participants and avoid duplication. There are a wide variety of activities that you can participate in to help the Love INC staff make this a wonderful Christmas for the working poor and others in need.

Set Up – Love INC will collect toys and other donations up to the event. The day before the event, Tuesday, De-cember 15

th, they will set up the Expo Center like a “store”, sorting toys by age and gender. MANY volunteers

are needed to put this together. You may want to encourage your UMW Circle or Sunday School class to partic-ipate. They will begin at 9:00 AM and work until they are “done.” Depending on the number of volunteers, they are usually through by 5:00 p.m.

The BIG DAY – December 16th. They need ‘shoppers’ to walk around with the clients while they choose gifts for their

children. There is also a place for children who come with their parent to do crafts. Volunteers are needed to supervise the craft area while their parents shop. Clients will have assigned appointment times, and volunteers can sign up to help in 3-hour increments beginning at 8:00 a.m. The event will last until 8:00 p.m.; volunteers are needed to help with “tear down”.

Provide refreshments for the volunteers – You are welcome to provide refreshments for volunteers on December 16

th.

Love INC wants to thank those volunteers who have helped in the past. They hope you will join them this year. This is as much of a blessing to the volunteers as it is to the clients! For more information, call Love INC at 936-569-8555.

SERVICE SUNDAY – November 15th

Come join in this afternoon of service to the people of our community and congregation. We will have a light lunch at

noon in the FLC. We will then divide into service groups for our numerous service projects. We have something for

all ages and abilities, so bring your family and friends. Groups will do a number of home repairs for Love INC cli-

ents who are disabled. We will have a clean-up crew for one of our city trails, and another group to help with a yard

clean-up for a Love INC client. Volunteers will make holiday gift jars which will be taken to our members who are una-

ble to attend church services. You are free to wear your work clothes to church, or change after the service. Let’s re-

member that the Kingdom of God is built when we get out of the “castle” and go to work!!

THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!! The September 12

th Service Project to repair the home of a widow and her sons was very successful due to many

dedicated individuals. The roof was replaced, and the kitchen and bathroom were remodeled. God’s love was revealed by this loving endeavor. Our October 4

th Food Drive for SFA’s “Food for Thought” was a great success; thanks to your generosity!

Great job!
