"The Scribed Line" is a monthly publication of the Oregon Historical Modelers Society (OHMS) to inform the membership of club events, discuss club business, and promote the hobby. OHMS is a non-profit organization dedicated to having fun and serving the modeling community in Portland, Oregon. OHMS is a chartered chapter of the International Plastic Modelers Society (IPMS).

Letter from Oregon State Fair to OHMS It was a pleasure to meet you last evening and take a brief peek into the world of modelers. I really hope some of your group, and especially young people, will make the effort to enter the Fair this year. Perhaps the robotics modelers could do a demonstration. I will need to know ASAP if they are interested in that as the demo spaces are filling up quickly. One thing I forgot to mention is that each exhibitor does not have to make the trek to Salem with their entry. As long as each has registered on line and packs their model securely, one or two people from your club could be designated to deliver. If you are interested in judging, you obviously can’t enter. Modelers are invited to bring in their exhibits and collections on Friday, August 16 from Noon to 7pm--if folks want to come in the morning, I can make arrangements for that. The judging is on Saturday morning beginning at 9am. I’ll put together an announcement for the newsletter and get it into Larry. Lastly, if several of your club members enter the Fair, I am working on getting permission to display a 3x5 card with info about the club. I think folks need to know that these hobbies are alive and active. I am meeting representatives of all kinds of creative guilds that I never knew existed. Thanks for your positive response to my efforts. People who have never won a ribbon at the Fair don’t know how it feels. My “Judges Choice” is on my frig. July 16th Meeting Notes Graciously Compiled by your club secretary:

Bruce McKinney

Meeting called to order at 7:30 pm by club president, Chris Binnett

Chris thanked Bill Chilstrom for his efforts on his face painting seminar last build nite.

OHMS September Evergreen show report: Brian Yee reported 18/19 vendor tables already sold. Our "special raffle" prize of the 1/32nd scale He 219 has arrived and was brought down for members to oogle over. Chris reported the awards are progressing nicely - in large - bases are done and in yours truly's hands for sanding and painting. Awards medallions are nearly done and Chris will begin the painting and weathering process. Chris called for members to consider some judging duties as well as ushering duties.

Lynn Burris has made arrangement for the museum at The Bomber Gas Station in Milwaukee to open the museum as well as a (possible) guided tour. The date chosen for the tour was Saturday August 24th. Please contact Lynn if you are interested so he can let The Bomber staff know how many to expect.

Chris Binnett has a new meeting feature he unveiled at this meeting. He called it "stash raid". Basically, how it works is pretty simple - if you have a part you need for a particular model - there will be an opportunity to make your need known and possibly someone will have the part - or, we can all look to Larry Weinstock to supply the part as he has every piece of injention plastic ever produced from the late 50's on.

Chris reminded members of the Oregon State Fair's request to display models. Flyers were available to those wishing to enter a model into the fair and possibly win a fabulously large frilly ribbon. Chris reminded everyone that this was how he got his start in modeling and could be great inspiration to those wanting to give-it-a-go.

Bill Chilstrom reminded members of the upcoming Military Vehicle Preservation Show at the Expo Center. Will have been completed by the time you read this.

Andrew Stiffler gave a very brief report on the Airliners International Show in Cleveland Ohio that he attended. Andrew also took home a people choice award for his very colorful Ecuadorian Sunbird 707 airliner. Congrats to Andrew!

Chris wished our very own Larry Randel - the guy that does everything for the club - a speedy recovery from his recent illness.

Model review began at 8:10 PM.

Meeting adjourned at 8:50 PM

Correction from July Newsletter:

Um ... not a Rolls Royce ... it is a 1929 Cord L-29 SC (Special Coupe by Hayes Body) by Bruce Craig.

For years, Bert Kinzey’s Detail & Scale monograph series was a standard in modeler and aviation enthusiast reference books. But all good things eventually come to an end, and D&S was no different.  The reasons were several, not least being Bert’s health.

But  technology  is  changing  everything, including aviation and modeling books.   Bert has  announced  a  new  series  of  electronic book  titles, which will  soon  be  available  in both  iBook and Kindle  format.   The  first will be the McDonnell F3H “Demon” title pictured above. Bert promises that it will be available late this year, with more titles to follow next year.    Check  www.detailandscale.com  for further updates on the exact release date.
