Newsletter – Friday 17 July 2020

At the end of an extraordinary year, I want to say thank you to all parents and carers for the support you have shown the school and your children, and really well done to the Denefield students for their determination, perseverance and endeavour. Until March this year there were so many highlights of the school – the PE awards, autumn fair and autumn concert before October half term, the Black History month events in November, the Christmas fair and concert in, well, December, the History trip to Ypres, the Art trip to Venice, and the LGBTQ History Month events in February. Of course, the educational world was turned upside down in March and the school, alongside businesses and organisations across the globe, had to rapidly adjust to new ways of working. So many students have worked so hard at their online work, including live lessons, and we greatly enjoyed having Study Club students in school at first, followed by Year 10 and Year 12

students. This week, we were very excited to welcome Year 6 students and their parents/carers in to school, and we are really looking forward to having the whole school back in September.

Taking the chop for Mental Health – Mrs Saverton’s haircut challenge It is with great pleasure that I can say I have raised over £2000 between the two charities – Sport in Mind and YoungMinds. Thank you all who have donated and shared my links, your support and kindness has been so humbling, and kind words have encouraged me to continue to take the plunge and loose the hair with confidence. The nerves have bubbled occasionally but the thought of the support these charities give has helped calm the butterflies. It’s not too late if you would like to donate to these worthwhile causes, please go to my Just Giving Page for Young Minds and/or my Just Giving Page for Sport in Mind.

Subject Heroes As we get to the end of another academic year, we want to acknowledge all the hard work that our students having been doing. While it has not been easy for anyone, there are some who have gone above and beyond the norm and have consistently engaged in their work and have done everything they can to keep learning. We know we can’t publicly recognise every student individually, so to all who have worked so hard in spite of individual circumstances, we would like to say an enormous well done. Here are just some students who have been specially recognised by each department for their engagement, resilience and ambition. They are among our heroes! For someone so early in her Denefield school journey Taya already encapsulates our CHARACTER values and demonstrates these in abundance. From minute one when the house team and her tutor, Mr Nicholls, met Taya last July for the induction evening we instantly knew that we had an absolute star in our midst – her beaming smile was evident to all right from the start. The happiness that Taya shows on a daily basis is truly infectious and every member of staff that comes across Taya cannot help but notice the warmth that her smile generates.

Taya is an incredibly respected and respectful member of her tutor team, she has demonstrated real friendship and kindness in helping some of her peers throughout the course of the year. Behind her incredibly smiley exterior lies a student with real resilience and confidence and a drive to succeed in everything she does. She never gives anything but her best. She is articulate and incredibly well-mannered to all of those she comes in contact with. This has been noticed by all of Taya’s teaching staff and Taya has amassed an incredibly large amount of achievement points throughout the year, demonstrating the outstanding and positive start that she has made to her time with us. Outside of school, Taya demonstrates determination and talent in her extra-curricular activities. We are extremely proud to be able to award Taya with this award, it represents the importance of not only having a tremendous work ethic but also the importance of being kind hearted. Taya has displayed these in abundance and this award is very well deserved. Year 8 CHARACTER Award 2020 Harrison Vauthan-Graham The Year 8 award has been given, with great pleasure, to Harrison. He is kind, respectful and polite to both staff members and his peers. His ability to light up a room and to bring the best out in others is a gift that few people his age possess. He is ambitious, courageous and resilient, and embodies everything that we stand for here at Denefield. Harrison throws himself into a wide range of extra-curricular activities, including becoming an ace on the drums, and was a pivotal member of the Year 8 football team this year. When you meet Harrison, you immediately know that he is the sort of young man who not only will go far in life, but will do so with a smile on his face. Year 9 CHARACTER Award 2020 Callum Thomas-Benjamin The award for overall Year 9 CHARACTER award goes to a very deserving young man. Callum is kind, considerate, respectful and unwaveringly polite. He is very hard-working and embodies everything you would expect from a Denefield student. When asked to describe Callum every member of staff talked about his happy disposition, his calm demeanour and his resilience. He has a great sense of humour and is a credit to our school. Callum is a consistently high performer in and out of lessons. He faces his own challenges but rises to every occasion, has been nominated for previous awards by his tutor and subject teachers and frequently receives achievement points for his fantastic engagement and progress in lessons. Callum brings a sense of happiness to everyone around him and he plays a vital role in the tutor group; being the perfect role model for the younger students and peers alike. Mr Raw describes Callum as polite, friendly and an empathetic young man, he has a lively sense of humour and is a popular member of the tutor team. We couldn’t be prouder to have such a wonderful student in Year 9! Year 10 CHARACTER Award 2020 Olivia Robinson Olivia is a student who fully embodies the CHARACTER values of Denefield School. She has faced a challenging year head on with awe inspiring levels of resilience and courage. She always communicates with staff to ensure that she is completing work despite circumstances often meaning that this can be a difficult task. Olivia will regularly be that student who will get straight to work and won’t stop until she has confidently exceeded expectations. She is hardworking and ambitious – often her own toughest critic, and her personal levels of resilience displayed, as she strives to achieve academically, are second to none. Olivia not only articulates herself well when speaking with staff and adults, she is also able to communicate with students of all ages. This is demonstrated when she leads tutor sessions and directs classroom

debates and discussion sessions. She is courageous enough to share her well informed thoughts and opinions, all with high levels of respect and tolerance in order to then listen carefully to those of others. Also to be noted are Olivia’s levels of empathy and kindness to others. These CHARACTER traits shine from her not only in school, where she has been a constant source of support to so many of her friends, peers and younger students in her tutor group, but also in the wider community. Olivia has spent many of her lockdown days supporting her dad as they deliver food to those who have been shielding in quarantine. Olivia is a role model to us all and we thank her for her constant and effortless demonstration of the CHARACTER values that bring such happiness to so many. Year 11 CHARACTER Award 2020 Elise We are delighted to award the Year 11 CHARACTER award to an incredibly deserving student. Elise has been a pillar of the school community throughout her time at Denefield. She has demonstrated an unenviable sense of passion for everything that she has been involved in, she most certainly does not do things half-heartedly. Elise has shown huge levels of confidence during her time at Denefield, nothing demonstrating this more than in her fantastic showing during the Denefield mock general election. Elise presented her views with a skilful amount of articulacy and gained an even greater sense of respect than she already had from staff and students alike. Elise is incredibly mature and has been a wonderful source of support for many of the younger members of the school community. In her role as peer mentor Elise ensured that she listened and supported students who valued her help immensely. Elise has also been a fantastic member of her tutor group over the years, again offering huge amounts of support, she has exceptional organisational skills and has used these to a great deal of effect when organising tutor assemblies and some tutor time activities. Elise is selfless and is empathetic to the core. She has a fierce sense of competition and loves to be successful at everything she does, whether that be a simple quiz or a complicated essay question. Elise embodies CHARACTER values and is Denefield through and through, she has contributed a huge amount to the school community and I am confident that she will have received a huge amount in return: this will stand her in very good stead for the future. Elise’s ambition and drive are admirable and there for anyone who has met her to see, this is something that has stayed with me from the first few times I have worked with her. Elise has a great love for languages and is a keen and talented dancer – something she has been since she was a little girl. We are delighted for Elise that she is receiving this very well deserved recognition. It shows that hard work, dedication and above all being a well-rounded and lovely human are a winning combination. We have absolutely no doubt that Elise will go on to even bigger and better things and we all at Denefield, wish her the very best for bright and successful future. Year 12 CHARACTER Award 2020 Abigail Brooker Abi is a shining example to all of us. She has thrown herself into Sixth Form life and taken every opportunity presented to her. Abi found a niche as a Peer Educator and a House Captain, providing excellent emotional support and showing her leadership qualities. She also represents the Reading Youth Parliament, and has presented details of the discussions and activities to her peers. Academically, Abi shows great resilience. She works really hard in all subjects, learning independently and taking ownership of her studies. During the pandemic, Abi has been working steadily and without complaint. She is extremely conscientious and always goes above and beyond what is required.

Year 13 CHARACTER Award 2020 Mackenzie Raymond Mackenzie is an exemplary young man. He has shown tremendous drive in his studies, balancing this with additional work towards coaching and refereeing with the FA. He works incredibly hard in and out of lessons and never settles for anything less than his best. Mackenzie always adopts a mature and independent attitude towards his work. His teachers have always been impressed with the amount of work he does outside of lessons to ensure he is successful. He never makes excuses or grumbles; he merely puts in the hours and keeps working hard. Mackenzie has applied to read International Management and Spanish at Bath University. We wish him every success in his degree. I am certain he will achieve great things. Staff farewells It is with sadness but gratitude that we say farewell to the following teaching staff who are leaving us: Mr Baxter (Business Studies) Mr Baxter has worked for Denefield for 18 months. He plans to travel around Europe before returning to his native Australia, where he intends to become a tutor. Miss Johnson (English) Miss Johnson trained at Denefield with the Berkshire Teaching Alliance and has been with the school for three years. She leaves to take up a post as an English teacher at a school closer to home. Mr Webster (Curriculum Leader for PE) Mr Webster has overseen the development of the PE department into one of the strongest teams in Reading, including the development of GCSE and A Level PE, BTEC Sport Level 2 and Level 3, and BTEC Health and Social Care Level 2 and Level 3. He also initiated the coaching partnership with Reading FC and has worked with the school on plans to build a new Astroturf. He leaves to take up a post as Assistant Head in another Reading school. Miss Bryan (Art Teacher and Head of House) Miss Bryan joined the school as an art teacher in 2008, and was promoted to Head of Year in 2009 before becoming a Head of House in 2013. Hailing from the West Country, Miss Bryan has taken a post as Head of Year 7 at a school in Bristol. Mr Boys (Assistant Headteacher) Mr Boys joined Denefield School in 1989 as a Modern Foreign Languages teacher and his calming and pleasant manner with the students quickly led him to get involved in the pastoral side of teaching. He became a head of year and followed his passion to support the development of the whole child. He was interested in transition and so was trusted with ensuring the smooth movement of students from their Year 6 school to Year 7 at ‘The Big School’. Whilst developing as a teacher and a leader Mr Boys took time out to travel and spent some months in India, no doubt getting involved in Education, but learning about different countries and cultures. He returned to take on a role with Denefield Enterprises which was a company set up in school that generated funds for rewards for students. It was at this point the school became a technology college and as his leadership skills developed further he wanted further responsibility and an opportunity to help shape the school and so he applied for, and was appointed, Assistant Headteacher in 2008. Most of the responsibilities Mr Boys has undertaking in his most recent role have been connected with people. He has excellent interpersonal skills and can communicate really well with all stakeholders. He is now taking early retirement after over 30 years of committed service to the Denefield community. Thank you to all of these staff who have made a substantial contribution to Denefield School.
