Spring - Prune shrubs that flower in the late spring or early fall. Also prune perennial grasses. - Transplant shrubs and trees as the soil thaws. Transplanting at this time helps reduce the amount of stress the plants go through during the move since the temperatures aren’t too hot yet. - Divide perennials that are well established. Again, spring is the perfect time to divide perennials that bloom later into the summer and fall. - Stir mulch in landscaping to minimize the amount of weeds and to loosen up the mulch from being packed down all winter. - Apply crabgrass preventer. - Apply rabbit repellent. - Fertilize shrub roses with an insecticide and disease preventer such as Start and Grow and Rose Food. - Stake plants, such as peonies, hibiscus, delphiniums, and tomatoes to protect them from rain and wind damage. - Fertilize lawns if they were stressed during the previous fall or if there were issues with crabgrass. - Apply fertilizer to plants to boost growth. - Remove tree covers. winter. - Place tree protectors on young trees to prevent damage during the winter.- Mulch around bases of shrubs and perennials. Apply chicken wire if deer or rabbits are an issue.- Apply deer repellent as directed.- Plant spring bulbs.
