Principal’s report
I would like to thank everyone for the warm welcome I have received since returning from my
tour of duty at North Eastern Region. This opportunity came about when several senior staff
took their annual leave and I was privileged to support schools in the Monash and Lilydale
districts. This role gave me great insights into the detailed operation of the Department and the
care and attention that these offices play in the background to support students and schools.
Whole School Presentation Night Presentation night will be held at 1330 on Monday 17 December. We look forward to a wonderful evening celebrating student achievement. Let’s hope that we don’t have another hail event like last year. Master Plan Developments The Science block is largely complete and was handed back to College in the last week of term 3. There are still some finishing off to do but the facility looks great. The Art technology block has been emptied and handed over to the builders. At the moment they are stripping the internal walls and fixtures and removing roof elements. The junior courtyard progresses well. We are currently waiting for the soil fill to the three large raised areas to settle before fake turf can be installed. The next section for work will be the gym toilets and PE office. This is expected to begin in mid-November. Years 7-10 Examinations
Year 7 to 10 October exams begin on Wednesday 7 November. I would like to wish all students the very best of luck and encourage them to prepare for success by studying hard and revising all notes, past tests and projects. Year 11 exams begin on 26th November.
Year 12 Graduation Evening
The Year 12 graduation evening was conducted at Caulfield race course last Friday. I know that the parents thoroughly enjoyed the evening and it was a great send off for the students. I would like to thank Mrs Craig, Mrs Patti and the Parents, Teachers, Students and Friends Association for all of their hard work in organising the evening.
Curriculum Day Monday
I would like to remind our school community that Monday 5th November is a curriculum day. Students are not required to attend however students undertaking Unit 3 and 4 Further Maths and Business Management have exams. We wish them all the best.
Ian Watkins Principal
On Tuesday the Junior Debating Team competed in their third and final debate as part of the DAV Junior Debating Program. This was the first year Highvale has entered a team in the competition and we are proud to walk away with two wins and one very close loss.
Five students from Year 8 (Rachel Cameron, Anjana Niranjan, Novica Pearsall, Jade Soderstrom and Radinsa Weerasinghe) and one Year 7 (Joey Bulakh) represented the school and participated in training sessions to develop their skills. I would also like to extend a very special thank you to Becky Prystupa who assisted me with some coaching at lunchtimes.
All students involved with this program should be very proud of their efforts.
Earth Science – SC405
Excursion to Melbourne Museum and IMAX cinemas
Last term, my earth science class had an excursion to the Melbourne museum where we looked around and also went to see a film at IMAX. This was all to do with our unit where we had been learning about astronomy.
At Melbourne museum we got to see in real life, what we had been learning about only in our text books, we saw meteorites as well as a rock from the Moon. We also went to see a film on natural disasters which will be our new topic for the next term. I learnt many things that I hadn’t known before. I definitely learnt a lot from this excursion and also had a fun time with my class.
