Principal’s Report

National Aerobics Representation

It is a pleasure to begin my report this week with a huge congratulations to our

two Aerobics teams – Whirlwinds and Warriors who have represented our

school this weekend at the Gold Coast in the National Aerobics championships.

A huge congratulations to our girl’s team – Whirlwinds - who took out the top

spot in their division – coming first in the Primary Stage 2 division and earning

the National Champion title! Congratulations to Coach Miss Bath and the girls!

Our Boys also performed admirably, in particular achieving Nationals selection

in their very first year as a team.

There was a great representation from Warners Bay Public School with parents,

family and staff, and this support goes a long way towards making our teams the

success they are. Our fabulous coaches, Miss Lisa Bath and Mrs Roleter Lane have

worked hard with the students to increase fitness, and agility and to develop and

perfect very demanding routines. Miss Emily Forbes-Morton has also been a great

support to both teams through this process. A personal thank you to everyone

involved with the teams – making it possible to achieve, attend and succeed at this

very high level of representation.

NAIDOC

This week our school acknowledges NAIDOC week, and the importance of build-

ing strong relationships with our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community.

This year’s focus is “Our Languages Matter”. Today we have a special guest per-

former in the school, Sean Choolburra who is engaging students in Aboriginal cul-

ture through dance and traditional stories. Tomorrow, we have our official NAIDOC assembly. All community are warmly

welcomed to attend this special occasion. Classes will also be engaging in a range of activities throughout the week.

Kinder 2018

We are currently taking enrolments for Kindergarten 2018, for in-zone enrolments and consideration of our of zone en-

rolments.

If you have, or know of a child who is due to start to school next year (turning 5

before 31st July 2018), please let us know so that we can include them in our Kinder

train Transition process. Enrolment packs have been sent out and parents are able

to make times for Kinder Enrolment interviews.

Before School Supervision

I need to remind all parents and carers that there is no formal supervision of stu-

dents before 8:40am of a morning. It is preferred that students do not arrive at

school before this time so that they are completely safe. If this provides difficulty

for working parents and families, perhaps arrangements can be made with other

families for assistance or enquiries be made to ‘OOSH’ for that additional supervi-

sion. Please contact me if you would like to discuss this issue further.

School Canteen

Further to my communication last week, our canteen has remained difficult to staff and sadly this has meant that it has

been closed on some days. I see our school canteen as a vital service to our students and community, but we are una-

ble to open it without parent support. This year, we have spent a significant amount of money on new equipment, in-

cluding a new commercial sized oven/ stove, a new pie warmer, new microwave, and donations of a soup crock pot

and other smaller appliances. We have recognised how difficult it became cooking large numbers of food orders with

the equipment we had. We sincerely hope that this revamp of the canteen will “entice” parents / grandparents to come

back and continue to support us.

Warm regards,

Assistant Principals Report What a busy start we have had to Term 3.

Last week we had our student led conferences. It was great see how far the students have come, they are more pre-

pared to discuss their learning and reflect on how they can progress for the rest of the year. Some may have been

quite nervous and may have needed prompting, but is important for them to take part. Many will thrive on the oppor-

tunity to discuss their own progress. The student led conferences were a great way to show how students are taking

responsibility for their learning.

Students taking responsibility for their learning helps improve their understanding and achieve higher levels as they be-

come more self-reliant and self-directed. They are more motivated to learn and confidence

continues to grow as they can see their strengths and areas for improvement. When students

are given the opportunity to reflect on their learning and, have parents and teachers listen, it

builds positive communication which helps create a productive learning environment

shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.

Library News August is here already, which means the MS Readathon has started. This is an opportunity for any students who are

interested to be sponsored for their reading and raise money to support people with this disease.

Students simply register online at msreadathon.org.au with approval from their parents, or by completing a registration

form. It is the responsibility of the students who register to organise and collect donations and complete the program

by reading as much as possible throughout August. Every student who completes the program will receive a certificate

of appreciation.

This is a wonderful time to encourage student reading and at the same

time make a difference in the lives of those living with multiple sclerosis.

Happy reading!

Tell Them From Me parent survey (Term 3, 2017)

I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a De-

partment of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures

factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-

side survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

You may remember that our Year 6 students also participated in a Tell Them From me student survey in

Term 1 this year. Asking students to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify trends in

student responses as well as track engagement and motivation across the school year.

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what

they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact

with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help im-

prove how they do things at school.

I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less

than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 21 August and 13 Octo-

ber. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.

FAQs for parents/carers about the survey is included in this Newsletter. If you do not want your child or

children to participate, please let your child’s class teacher know.

This term, our school will also be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the

Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The sur-

vey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing

and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experi-

ence at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at

home and parent/carer views on the school’s support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will

help our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, ipaids, tablets,

laptops or computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to

complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be con-

ducted between 21 August and 13 October. Although participating in the

survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much appreciated.

Our school will provide further information about how to access the sur-

vey as the date approaches. In the meantime, more information about the

survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/

Stage One News

What a great start to NAIDOC we’ve had. Today’s performance by Sean Choolburra was wonderful. I’m also looking

forward to watching our students perform at the Wallsend Winter Fair on Sunday. This week 2M are excited to be

running the assembly. We hope that you will be able to be there on Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock.

2M have been working hard on writing descriptions over the past few weeks. They are learning to use

time connectives and adjectives to make their writing more interesting. Here are a couple of examples.

The Skater

The girl looked very warm and was extremely happy. She was wearing a pretty, garnet red coat and

had a lovely pair of violet skates. The girl had pink, rosy cheeks, a fluffy hat and a pretty pink scarf.

Elizha

The Beach

One beautiful afternoon, the waves were crashing onto the sand. The starfish was so colourful. There

were golden sandcastles everywhere! The water was like a crystal. What a lovely day! Henry

Stage Two News

Welcome to Term 3!

I am so pleased to be here with you all for another term and cannot wait to see how much you grow and learn togeth-

er.

Term 3 is an exciting term with Pyjama Day just gone, NAIDOC week and the Zone Athletics coming up, as well as the

Aussie Bush Camp at the end of the term (just to name a few). I know the students are already counting down the days

till we are on the bus to camp.

Thank you to all the parents who came to the Student Led Conferences. I am sure you were as proud of your child as I

was, as they showcased their wonderful work and spoke confidently about their goals for Semester Two.

In Writing, 4B have been working on developing complex sentences through power writing and then using them in a

paragraph. Here is some of our work. The pug longed.

As his tummy rumbled, the small and cute pug waited sadly as he watched the food, like a tiger waiting to pounce on his

prey. Jeice Brown

As the sun took the moon’s place, the miniature, desperate pug longed patiently for one single piece of cheese like a

wolf waiting for the right time to strike. Elijah Ball

As the clock struck twelve, the pitiful puppy, waited excitingly, like a kid about to go on a rollercoaster. While he wait-

ed his tummy rumbled like an earthquake about to destroy the earth. Harrison Donald

The monster waited

As the house shook, the gruesome, nauseating monster waited cautiously to work up the confidence to come out and

say hi to the little girl, like a bird stalking its prey. All the monster wanted to do was slither himself out quietly like a

snake. He wanted to make friends with the girl because he was a friendly monster, however he didn’t look nice with his

yellow teeth, well sharpened claws, fat body and creepy eyes. It just looked like he was ready to pounce on the girl and

have a midnight feast, like a group of kids having a sleep over. Callum Cornford

As the clock struck midnight the hideous, disturbing monster waited patiently like a lion stalking its prey. He was wait-

ing for the perfect time to strike at the girl and eat her. As the lamp shuttered the monster leapt from under the bed.

Before you could blink, the girl and the monster were gone. Chelsea Brown

Stage Three News

Canberra

Stage 3 are busily working on learning all about Local, State and Federal Government in preparation for their excursion

to Canberra. Please remember that we depart on Day 1 of Term 4 (Monday 9th October) at 6am. Students should by this

Friday, have finalised or be close to finalising their camp payments. If you are unable to so, please contact the school office

regarding this matter.

Our school is asked to make the payments before we depart and so, outstanding funds can impact heavily on our school

budget and the viability of the excursion. Accompanying today’s newsletter will be medical and emergency contact paperwork

for the excursion. It would be greatly appreciated if they could be filled in and returned to the office chute by Monday 4 th

September, as it takes an enormous amount of time for our admin team to collate the required excursion spread sheets. The

bus company will also soon begin sending requests for dietary requirements and we need this information to be at hand to

distribute to the venues.

The Stage 3 teachers would like to take this opportunity to thank our parents for their amazing efforts to ensure their

child(ren) are able to attend this wonderful learning experience. We are aware that this financial outlay is quite a big

challenge for our families and want to extend a sincere thank you on behalf of the students and ourselves. This trip is

truly an amazing experience for all students who attend and one that they remember forever. I still run into students

who ventured to Canberra with me decades ago, and it is always raised as a highlight of their time in primary school.

Ms Patrick on Long Service Leave

I will be on LSL from Monday 14th August until the end of this term. I wish I could say I was heading off somewhere

exciting to far flung places in the world but… I will be staying local and labouring at my house, getting it ready to move

back into over the next school holidays. As anyone who has renovated before knows, it is an expensive and time con-

suming process and one that I cannot do whilst working full time. So the overseas holiday will have to wait and the

paintbrush, hammer and saw will be my best friends over the coming 6 weeks.

I will of course ensure that if needed, I will be available to pop in and finalise anything required for the transition to

Year 7 or the Canberra excursion but I know that I leave those things in the capable hands of Miss Gentle and my fabu-

lous Stage 3 team of teachers.

Mr Mark Newling will be covering my class in my absence. He will be following my teaching programme. Mark is a

wonderful and highly experienced practitioner, and is well liked and respected by the students in 6P. I thank him in

advance for his efforts.

What’s happening in 6P?

Last Wednesday morning Year 6 had the exciting opportunity to take part in a special 2 hour Science lesson presented

by 2 wonderful staff from WBHS. The students had a team design challenge to create a ‘catapult’. They had to work

together to make and test their design and were then involved in a final competition component to determine the best

design.

Year 6 had a brilliant time and learnt lots about cooperative team skills, adjusting designs once tested and how difficult

it is to design something with a limited number of materials. See below for photos of the challenge.

As well as learning about government as part of their History lessons, many

Stage 3 classes have been taking part in some inspiring writing challenges

linked to a great online site called Pobble 365. It is a literacy based site with

a picture stimulus, language challenges and talking and listening tasks all

linked to a picture stimulus.

So far, the students love the experience and have produced some pleasing

writing samples. It is not designed to be a whole narrative writing experi-

ence but centres on getting the descriptive juices flowing and employing

strong literary devices to enhance the product. We are trying to begin our

descriptive introduction only. I have included a few samples below to high-

light a few of the clever bunnies in 6P.

A Blank Canvas – students had 5 minutes to draw their own artwork on the canvas and then

write about it.

New Years in New York by Charlotte Couch

As the fireworks go off, a gentle sigh carries on the night-time air.

Most people would be out with their friends or family tonight, but

that was not for Emily Jackson. Emily took another sip from the ruby liquid in her left hand, as

she perched quietly on the verandah rail of her apartment. She leaned her right elbow on the

iron bars and slowly let out another small sigh. Spending New Years in the city of New York,

why did that sounds so cheesy?

The Monastery by Tiernan Mulhall

The monastery was his home. It had been so for all of his life.

As he drew back his shutters and gazed out, as he did every morning when the sun rose to the east, the view

astounded him. He thought to himself that this must surely be the most beautiful place on Earth.

The cherry blossoms were in full bloom and that was what made him most love this view at this time of year. He enjoyed

watching all of the little, far-off people scuttling around like tiny ants. But the part he loved most of all was his view of Mount

Fujiyama. He only ever saw it each day for about three minutes but it was still always the most glorious part of the day. He

loved watching the trees swaying in the wind, as the birds chirped their songs, bringing joy to his existence. He called out

with a glorious burst of his voice, claiming how much he loved everything he could see.

Titanic Eye by Aimee Gollop

As the water bashed against the Titanic, it was my turn to leave the deck and return to

my room. I was already feeling so queasy. The palm of my hand was clenched against the

railing, looking for warmth. I turned and after a few minutes, I reached my room just as

the boat’s engine started up. It was finally my turn to go on the journey to America.

Five hours into the trip, somewhere in the middle of the night, I realised I was in trouble.

As I slowly lifted my hands to my face I realised that I had something written on my

palm. It was a story; a life story. The story was burning into my eyes. It was like my eyes

were set on fire. I glanced around the room and I realised the paintwork on the walls

looked like an eye. I then realised that this moment was supposed to happen this way…I

would never reach America.

The Monastery by Alyssia Black

The monastery was his home. It had been so for all of his life.

As he drew back his shutters and gazed out, as he did every morning when the sun rose to the east, the view

astounded him. He thought to himself that this must surely be the most beautiful place on Earth.

He looked out and saw the pink cherry blossoms blooming. They looked like beautiful pink ice-cream sprinkled across the

trees. As he peered down at the village, he could smell something that resembled green tea. The clouds slowly moved and he

could now see the mountains very clearly and they were simply gorgeous.

He went downstairs as he did every day, to teach his class. As he looked out the windows again, the mountain was now once

again invisible. All he could hear around him was the sound of birds chirping and the wind howling across the valley. He

walked slowly out of the temple, just in time to watch the cherry blossoms bloom and fall to the ground.

The Ice Man by Ruby Gray

It was a bitterly cold morning. The world was locked in a wintery battle, with a whirlwind of

frost and snow marching all over the countryside.

This winter was different to a normal winter. This winter was coming alive. The Ice Man

turned his frosted face from side to side, and stretched and flexed his icy fingers.

Just as he began to defrost, the Ice Man moved his arms from side to side. Then he opened his deadly eyes

and suddenly bursts free from his icy tomb that has had him frozen solid for many years.

A couple of minutes later, the Ice Man slowly and desperately tried to climb up the face of the snow cov-

ered mountain side. Finally, he reached the top of the hill and roared down at the village sitting below on the wintery ground.

As he slowly crept down the mountain side, he thought to himself, “All of the people in this village are in for a huge treat!”

The Monastery by Maxwell Holland

The monastery was his home. It had been so for all of his life.

As he drew back his shutters and gazed out, as he did every morning when the sun

rose to the east, the view astounded him. He thought to himself that this must surely

be the most beautiful place on Earth.

The tall cherry blossom trees swayed in the cool breeze below him. He watched the city below the

monastery and could see families as they met under the amazing trees, as the stunning, pink flowers

drifted down and gently landed on them.

The city below had houses everywhere. Workers in those buildings sites were busily having breakfast, as Mount Fuji rose ma-

jestically above them. The cold, rigid snow hardened on the top of the famous mountain.

It was surely a spectacular sight to see.

The Ice Man by Lilly McHarg

It was a bitterly cold morning. The world was locked in a wintery battle, with a whirlwind of frost and snow

marching all over the countryside.

This winter was different to a normal winter. This winter was coming alive. The Ice Man turned his frosted

face from side to side, and stretched and flexed his icy fingers.

The stiff, rigid and life-less corpse of a small wolf lay nearby on top of the pure white snow. Hibernation had not gone as well

for most of the other wildlife, as they’d had no food for storage. The power of that blizzard had dissolved their food like sher-

bet in a glass of water.

The Ice Man rolled his neck until it cracked loudly in the silent, white world. He took his first slow steps and as he did, the col-

our came back to his eyes. They opened wider than they had ever been before. A thick layer of frost fell to the ground as he

shook his head from side to side. The Ice Man had awakened.

Going Under by Daniel Wilson

It was a beautiful, clear day, as the three divers plunged into the water… but under the

water, nothing was clear to the eye unless you had goggles on. The three divers swam as fast as

they could for a solid 50 metres before they all veered off to the left, where a boat awaited them.

But…the boat was not the only thing awaiting them as they approached it. They swam directly into

a pod of jellyfish and were hit in the face by a hurricane of stingers. They screamed and one diver

had a poisonous stinger flung inside his mouth. The divers flapped around frantically, and the boat,

recognising something was wrong, began to speed towards them. On arrival, what the team found were two half paralysed di-

vers and one dark, solitary figure floating down into the murky depths below.

The Ice Man by Maddison Farley

It was a bitterly cold morning. The world was locked in a wintery battle, with a whirlwind of frost and snow

marching all over the countryside.

This winter was different to a normal winter. This winter was coming alive. The Ice Man turned his frosted

face from side to side, and stretched and flexed his icy fingers. The pain of frost bite was etched deeply into his face

which was covered with battle scars.

One fretful step after another, the Ice Man attempted to descend the steep incline. Stumble… step… stumble… step. Every

puff he made showed up in the chilly air, faint but absolutely there. The Ice Man refused to give up on his challenging journey.

He had set himself a goal and he would achieve it, no matter what it took.

His ascent up the great mountain had been of little challenge to him but then he had lost his team of companions and become

lost. It had just proven to him just how brutally challenging this world could be; especially the world’s most challenging moun-

tain…Mount Everest.
