Turning Second Hand Goods into First Class Care Giving For Living - We Need You CATTLE SCHEME Brent Elder has been busy raising cattle for our Hopsice Cattle and Sheep Scheme. This is a relatively new income stream for us but one a number of hospices around the country run to support free services. Our first cattle have been sold and a second purchase of stock to graze on farms around the Wairarapa has been made. Brent is now seeking farmers who would be willing to host cattle and grow them for Hospice. There is no cost involved for the farmer. We are also looking for people or businesses who would be willing to sponsor the purchase of a beast that Brent can place on a farm. If you would like to help in this way then please call Emma at Hospice on 06 378 8888. If you would like to be part of this very important fundraising plan that directly benefits patients and their family or whanau, by raising an animal on your farm then please contact Brent on 027 208 7449. Thank you. Last month we were delighted to welcome Yvonne Renton as our new Retail Manager. Yvonne had been the Manager of one of the Otago Hospice Retail Shops before joining us. She is enjoying meeting our Shop customers and is really appreciating the wonderful donations that are coming in. It has been six weeks since I took over the role of Retail Manager and it has been a busy and exciting time. The Retail Manger’s position is also responsible for the Garage Sale and Trade Me so at any given time I might change hats mid-sentence, leaving the person in front of me wondering what I am going on about. I love it and it all adds to the fun of working for such a great organisation. The Shop has been trading very well with many positive comments on the layout and quality of the products available. We are very grateful to all our benefactors when it comes to donation of goods and services; goods donated to sell in the shop and services given freely by our wonderful team of volunteers. Trade Me is another vehicle for sales of donated goods. We use it to promote items that we feel could achieve a higher value if viewed by a wider audience. It is working well and is a great addition to our sales group. The wonderful team at our weekly Saturday Garage Sale continue to amaze with their specialised knowledge of how to work under difficult conditions. Rain or shine they prepare the area and make shopping on a Saturday from 9am until 11am great fun with many bargains and a sense of what can be achieved if you put your mind to it. So that is it, my first newsletter contribution and my grateful thanks to all those who donated their time or their possessions to Hospice Wairarapa so that we can turn second hand goods into first class care! Kind regards, Yvonne, Retail Manager A huge thank you to those who have signed up to make regular donations to support our patients. If you would like to join up and ‘Help make every day count’ for those we care for please go to the Hospice website hospicewairarapa.co.nz or call us on 06 378 8888. For example, if you pledged $10 a month, with the 33% tax deducation at the end of the financial year you’d be actually giving $6.67 a month or if you pledged $15 per month it works out costing $10. Volunteers don’t get paid, not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless! Our volunteers are our lifeblood...without them there would be no free Hospice services in our community, it’s that simple! They come from all walks of life and bring a richness of experiences and wisdom to their roles. They are all trained and professionally supported in their chosen areas of service. Some chose to work directly with patients, perhaps in the Patient and Family role, or as biographers or drivers. Others find satisfaction volunteering at our Hospice Shop at 53 Queen Street, as cooks or bakers, as gardeners, as trustees, looking after our base Te Kowhai, fundraising, collecting and delivering furniture, running the garage sale...and the list goes on! For some volunteering is on a regular basis, and for others it might be just when they have time or on an ‘on call’ basis. Whatever they choose, our Volunteers report their work is immensely satisfying and meeting a real need in our community. We’d love to hear from you! Message From Our GM Board NewsEarlier this year I had a health incident. It was a wake-up call for me personally over the fragility of life, and never having been seriously ill before, caused me to reflect on the path that palliative patients walk. Whilst my situation wasn’t a terminal one it was still cause for reflection on what is valuable in life.

We think we’re 10 foot tall and bullet proof, but inevitably we have limits, and we’re eventually in a place where we are dependant on the support of others.

Short visits, cards, phone calls, emails and practical support all became very valuable encouragements.

Obviously medical care is critically important, but for terminally ill patients in particular, there is a lot more that can be done to support them and their families.

That’s where Hospice steps in – our Board and management has a key strategic goal; the expansion of the support services we offer.

Some are structured and run out of Te Kowhai at Renall St, whilst others are on demand and available in the patients home.

I encourage you to grab one of our brochures so you have an understanding of how we can help, so when the need arises you are aware of how we can assist.

Or in the meantime how you can help others by becoming part of our fantastic team of Volunteers – never underestimate the difference YOU can make in the lives of others!

Last month was Hospice Awareness Week nationwide. We are making headway here in the Wairarapa getting the message out about Hospice care, but it is apparent that we still have work to do.

We are focused on continuing to educate our community about what Hospice is, what we provide and how our free services can be accessed. We still hear people say that Hospice is a place for cancer patients to die.

Please help us to spread the word that Hospice is not a building, rather it is a special way of caring for those with any kind of terminal illness such as Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neurone Disease, end stage heart or lung disease or cancer to name just some. Hospice cares for the patient, caregiver, whanau or family across their emotional, spiritual, physical and social needs in ways they choose. We provide that care at the patient’s home or at our community base Te Kowhai. We welcome palliative patients from Rest Homes to programmes at our base Te Kowhai too.

We don’t have an In-patient unit, although we are conducting a feasibility study to see if it would be possible. Nor do we provide any medical care; the DHB palliative nursing service Kahukura provide this care, and we work in partnership with them to ensure patients can receive a holistic package of care.

Please let people know that they are able to be referred for any of our services by their G.P or specialist, by themselves or a family member or friend. It just takes a phone call to our Clinical Services Manager Wendy Turton, on 06 929 7604.

Thank you for your ongoing support of our community Hospice, especially by spreading the word about who we are and what we offer; it is truly appreciated by all who use our services now or in the future.

We had such fun with this new fundraiser we are going to keep it going! All you need to do is gather a group of friends, family, colleagues, club members etc and host some sort of get-together.

From a fish and chip night with the neighbours, to a family BBQ, café catch up, business lunch, beers with mates, a pot luck, high tea or even a formal dinner party, your Hospicetality options are endless! You provide the venue and the experience, and in return your guests are asked to contribute by bringing a generous donation for Hospice which you as the host then bring to us.

We’d love it if you took a photo of your event too! It couldn’t be simpler to Share Some Hospicetality!

Once again our community has shown their generosity with our Awareness Week Appeal and the appreciation they have for our free Hospice services in our community. We are truly grateful to all who gave to help make every day count for those we support now and will support in the future. And the great thing about our Street Appeal is that every single cent donated stays here in our community!

We were also very thankful for the 70 plus Volunteers who braved the weather over three days to receive those wonderful donations.

Our grateful thanks go to the following businesses for their support with our Street Appeal during national Hospice Awareness Week.

Mitre 10 Mega Masterton have been a generous supporter of our community Hospice for a number of years, sponsoring our wine auctions and golf tournaments. Last month they become our formal partners and

will help us in promoting what we do in our community as well as assiting us with projects and fundraising. We enjoyed hosting part of their team at Te Kowhai where they pressented us with a cheque from their Awareness Week sausage sizzle and the first of 4 prototypes they have made for displaying and moving our Garage Sale goods. Thanks Mitre 10, we are so grateful for you support!

We also welcomed The Sign Factory as a new Hospice partner. We are thrilled that Matt and Brandon will sponsor our design work that we require for our printed material, including this newsletter.

The savings we make will go straight back into our patient programmes, so a huge thank you to printing.com@The Sign Factory. Roddy and Jesse are still

on board working with The Sign Factory crew. Please make sure you pop in to The Sign Factory for a visit when you need printing work done.

New Partners

It was with much sadness our Hopsice family farewelled a long serving Volunteer last month. Glyn Saunders had been a Volunteer at Te Omanga Hospice outreach in Lincoln Road Masterton and was vocal in his support for continuing the Hospice philosophy in our community when they left.

Glyn was our head gardener and spent many hours at our base Te Kowhai making our grounds a peaceful and tranquil spot for everyone to enjoy. Glyn will be greatly missed by us all.

Farewell to Glyn

Gather together your friends/family/colleagues during May to support Hospice Awareness. Enjoy a catch up and raise much needed funds to

help keep Hospice services free for all in the Wairarapa.

Use your imagination The Hospicetality options are endless!
