The meeting was held in the Estancia “Villa María” in Buenos Aires, Argentina on August 27 th 2005. The event was by invitation only, with a total of 40 participants highly specialized in affective disorders from Latin-America, Spain and Italy. First regional meeting The purpose of the recognised advocacy scheme is to bring together all interests in affective disorders in a powerful international alliance to defeat ignorance, prejudice and political apathy and poor care in these highly disabling conditions. The scheme aims to promote awareness of the ISAD Recognised Advocacy Scheme conditions and disseminate research about treatments to health workers and the public. Linking up advocacy groups with scientists and clinicians lends credibility at a national and international level. The over arching aim of the scheme is to develop a robust network of organisations at a global level in order to become a major influence on national governments and other large policy making organisations. The 1st Regional Meeting of the International Society for Affective Disorders (ISAD) and 1st Ibero-Latino-American Meeting on Bipolar Disorders was organized by the Argentine Society of Biological Psychiatry (AAPB) with an unrestricted educational grant of GlaxoSmithKline Laborato-ries and the academic support of the International Society for Bipolar Disorders (ISBD).

The meeting was held in the Estancia “Villa María” in Buenos Aires, Argentina on August 27th 2005. The event was by invitation only, with a total of 40 participants highly specialized in affective disorders from Latin-America, Spain and Italy.

ISAD’s first official con-ference outing was to the 6th International B i p o l a r D i s o r d e r C o n f e r e n c e i n Pittsburgh in June.

You can see the new exhibition stand in all its glory in the picture opposite.

Caroline staffed the stand during the conference making many useful contacts, meeting ISAD Fellows and attracting some new Fellows.

ISAD’s 3rd Biennial Conference will be held in Lisbon, Portugal from 3rd to 6th March St George’s Castle

the IOP and getting to know a few ISAD Fellows in the process. “Its been a challenge pulling all the strands together within a new institution but the Fellows have been very patient and encouraging.” She said.

Caroline attended the 6th Internat ional Bipolar Disorders Conference in Pittsburgh in June and will be at the WPA Conference

in Cairo in September. ISAD will have an exhibition stand at each event.

Caroline is looking forward to receiving feedback from Fellows regarding activities that they are involved in and on improvements which the Society could make.

Some of you may have noticed the new ISAD logo. The update was needed for several reasons. Firstly to improve the reproduction of the logo which previously was blurred and difficult to identify. Secondly it gives the Society’s image a more contemporary look. The image retains the globe and the suggestion of the eye sweeping round which is intended to symbolize the global nature of ISAD. The

colour scheme which is so distinctive. ISAD now

New administrator - Who, when, what, where? ISAD’s new administrator, Caro l ine Ho lebrook , arrived on the 10th Janu-ary at ISAD’s new office at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London.

Caroline’s previous role involved coordinating a London wide academic l ibrary training and development programme.
