With the support of a fantastic team of teaching and support staff, exam officers and invigilators the exams have got off to an excellent start with students showing great maturity and focus in their preparations. Please continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Saw Mill on Site - A mobile saw-mill was on site on Thursday and Friday this week and Technology students have been cutting up trees to make benches for the Peace Orchard in Coundon Park. The idea of creating a Peace Orchard came from World War II veteran Dennis Davison who remembers fighting in the apple orchards of Normandy in 1944 after the D-Day landings. We were also joined by Dennis who came along to oversee the work. We are looking forward to the peace picnic on 6 June in the Peace Orchard to mark the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings. Students from Year 7 and other year groups will walk to the Peace Orchard and join the Lord Mayor and members of our local community and Dennis to mark this very special occasion. Another Year 10 Football Success - Once again a huge well done to our Year 10 football team who have just made it through to their second cup final today beating Barrs Hill 2 – 1. Well done to the whole team on a great team performance, to the goal scorers David Finn and Mikey Walsh and to their team manager Mr McLintock. The team are now in the final of the West Midlands cup and the Coventry Schoolboys cup which is an amazing achievement - details to follow about both finals once they have been confirmed. Road Safety - On Wednesday after school one of our Year 7 students was knock down by a motorbike when he was crossing the road on his way home from school. Thankfully his injuries were not life threatening and he will make a full recovery. Parents are asked to remind their son/daughter of the importance of road safety and how to be safe crossing roads. Parents/carers are also reminded to ensure that students are dropped off or picked up in a safe and sensible place and to be mindful and considerate of our local residents and other road users when dropping off or picking up students. Saw Mill on Site - A mobile saw-mill was on site on Thursday and Friday this week and Technology students have

Lions Young Leaders in Service Award

Students from Cardinal Newman are offered opportunity to participate in a leadership scheme organised by the Cov-

entry Leofric Lions (Lions International). The scheme, known as the ‘Lions Young Leaders in Service Award’, awards

young people for the service they provide individually or collectively towards their community.

The scheme is open to young people aged 11-18 and you will be awarded for your service over a 12 month period as

follows:

Bronze Seal – 25 to 49 hours

Silver Seal – 50 to 99 hours

Gold Seal - 100 or more hours

Students will receive a logbook or record sheet in which they will record their hours of service over the 12 month period. The service can

be anything where you are providing a service to others and can be used in conjunction with other leadership awards such as the Duke of

Edinburgh so if you have completed 48 hours of Duke of Edinburgh activities that will go towards this leadership award. Some examples that

fit the criteria are:

Environment

Health

Literacy and Education

Safety

Parents and Family

Hungry and Homeless

Disaster Relief

Help Elderly

Community Improvement

Other

The award will start in the summer term 2019 with completion in the summer term of 2020. A presentation ceremony will take place

during this term to award all the young people who are involved. If you do decide to take part in this exciting opportunity you will receive a

Bronze, Silver or Gold certificate, depending on the hours you complete, a letter of congratulations and a choice of either a metal pin or a

cloth badge. Also, Lions International is recognised all over the world and this award will carry importance with it whenever you apply for

college, university and jobs.

If you have any questions contact Mr Davies by going to his room in Walsingham (WA12) or by e-mailing him – [email protected].
