As such, we encourage you to consider assessment as this cycle of learning, and not simply a letter grade or mark of achievement. The chart below demonstrates this process, as student learning is at the center of our focus, and in order for this to happen there must be conversations of the learning to develop and understanding of what they are doing or gaining knowledge in. There must also be opportunities for observation and time to create, display and share their learning. These key aspects need to go back and forth continuously for growth to take place in an area of academic learning. As a result, we encourage all families to take an active interest of what students are doing each and every day at school. Ask your kid(s) questions about whatever they learned that day, and ask them to share with you the ideas they took away from it. More importantly, ask students what they struggled to learn each day, and encourage them to speak to their peers, teachers and you for further support them in these areas in order for them to become more confident in these areas of learning.

Kindergarten Registartion (2018-19) Kindergarten Registration, for those students who will turn 5 years old in 2018, will start on January 10

th at both our Newton and

Fleetwood locations. For those families interested in registering their child, please bring all required documentation (birth certificate, immunization record, proof of address, proof of citizenships) and payment to the school office. We encoruage our SA families to register early, as seats are limited, and the KG sections often fill up fast.

Sikh Academy Health Committee with Fraser Health – SA Healthy Lifestyle Our partnership with Fraser Health is aimed at providing information and resources to SA families to promote a healthy lifestyle. For this month, the Health Committee has developed a healthy and tasty recipe for Dalia for all kids and families to try. “Do you want to send your kids to school alert and ready to learn? Yes! Make a delicious, warm bowl of Sehat Dalia which is easy to cook in less than 5 to 10 minutes. Your kids will love its sweet taste topped with a few chocolate chips and fruit like banana slices, apple slices, and berries. Dalia keeps your kids full for longer by giving them lots of fiber and protein. Using milk gives it another boost by adding calcium and B vitamins. Try this warm and filling breakfast with your family!”

Moving forward, each month we will provide some resources and information in this section for parents and students that will help them promote healthy lifestyle choices. We will also be building a website page (SA Healthy Lifestyle) on our homepage to further allow ease of access to these resources and information for all. Try the recipe above as a healthy and tasty snack for your kids.

Grad Picture Day (Fleetwood) Grad pictures for students in Kindergarten and Grade 7 at Fleetwood will take place at the same time as the class pictures on Friday, February 2

nd. Students are reminded to wear full school uniform. Grad pictures at Newton for

School Uniform As we are now in December, parents and students are reminded that all students must be wearing their full school uniform, which includes the Sikh Academy Navy Sweater/SA Sweatshirt. As per the SA Uniform Policy, students must be wearing their SA sweater from November to February, as the weather becomes colder. We need parents support on this, to ensure all students are wearing the full uniform. Our new uniform provider (Bravo Apparel) has also ensured us that all uniform back orders should be completed at this point. The backordered items were delievered to the school, and handed out to students and families.

Families can also visit Classroom Blogs for up to date information about what is happening in the classroom. These can be accessed through the For Students Tab and then selecting Teacher Pages.

Students Illness/Sick At this point in the year, there are a lot of students who are sick. We remind all parents/families that students who are sick and/or feeling unwell MUST remain at home until they recover. If you send students to school while they are sick, it is very difficult for them to do any work throughout the day; moreover, the kids who are sick then get other students sick as well. Please keep students home if they are not feeling well, and at school, we will ask these students to also go home if they are showing symptoms of being ill. Lastly, please encourage all students to have hand sanitizer with them on a regular basis, as to avoid the spread of viruses and harmful bacteria.
