Milnathort Members’ Newsletter Issue 5 Hello folks and welcome to Issue 5 of your Milnathort Golf Club Members’ Newsletter. Following some discussion regarding the frequency of the Newsletter, it has now been decided that it will be published every 2 months, rather than monthly, in the hope that there will be sufficient content to keep it interesting. So here we go with Issue 5. Firstly, for those of you who haven’t already met her, I’d like to introduce you to Julia Fulton who will replace Ken Dziennik as Club Administrator. So please pop into the office next time you are at the club and say “Hello” Jason Says Hi folks Well the rollercoaster ride we as greenstaff are having this season continues. However, we have now got verticutters working at long last so here’s hoping we can get those greens speeded up - thanks again for your patience on that one. We are starting to gain control again, with the exception of one or two areas, so we are back on top finally!!!. I would like to thank Roy Cogbill again for kindly trimming the hedge again. We are plannning to overseed the greens this month so we can take the greens through time to a better surface. David is back now so we can get some stability and programs put into practice efficiently. I am sure you will join me in congratulating David and Katy on the birth of their baby daughter – Congratulations to you! Please keep giving us your feedback - we need it all, good and bad, as always, to help the overall delivery of the excellence you all deserve. Happy golfing! Hello folks and welcome to Issue 5 of your Milnathort Golf Club Members’ Newsletter.

So please pop into the office next time you are at the club and say “Hello”

Hi folks

Well the rollercoaster ride we as greenstaff are having this season

continues. Continuing the “For Sale” theme, many of you may have seen the e-mail from Ken Dziennik regarding the possibility of finding a loving home for your unwanted clubs and equipment. For those of you who may have missed it, here’s what Ken had to say.

We have been thinking of ways of raising additional funds for the club and trying to do so in a way that benefits members also.

One proposal which we are looking to pursue is a sale of unused or second hand golf clubs or equipment in the clubhouse and this is where you can help. Most of us will have decent clubs or equipment we no longer use sitting in our houses or garages. While these may no longer be used by you, they may be things that could be used by fellow members.

So, if you have any good quality, unused clubs or equipment that you no longer need but have never got around to selling yourself why not donate them and allow us to sell them to raise funds for the club? The plan then is to hold a sale weekend or week where other members (or maybe even visitors) can purchase these if they wish.

We would like to hold the sale in perhaps late August so if you are able to help, please hand in any clubs or equipment you wish to donate by Friday 8th August. Anything we don't sell can either be returned to you or donated to a local charity shop.

Hopefully this will lead to a bit of de-cluttering for you at home, some much needed additional income for the club and perhaps even a good deal on a new piece of equipment you can purchase that has been donated by someone else.

Your support is appreciated.

With best regards

Ken Dziennik

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

I have often wondered why there are so many seemingly unreplaced divots on golf courses. Not just our own. The close proximity of the actual divot to the gouge mark and the fact that invariably the divot is upside down perhaps gives a clue. I have no evidence for my hypothesis as I have never seen the alleged culprits actually do the damage. But I suspect it is birds in search of ready access to tasty titbits. If this is the case I am not sure there is much even the most fastidious golfer can do short of pegging in the divot with a spare tee.

If it is birds that do the damage I don't know if it is limited to just one species. Seagulls are a good bet as they can often be seen tapping the ground with one foot which I assume is to bring worms to the surface, or maybe they are just impatient for the next flying divot. We are not short of a few seagulls at Milnathort. More than enough to keep turning over replaced divots.

So is it birds or incalcitrant golfers? My money is on the birds. Maybe we need a few more buzzards as giving Jason a gun might not be such a good idea.

Best Wishes

Who is your money on –

the birds or the golfers?

Milnathort Golf Club Seniors Section

A wise man once told me “Golf is the only game I know of that actually gets harder the longer you play.” Well that explains a lot to me and I’m sure most of you! But it does prove to me the need to start young and get to grips with the fundamentals. Having seen the swings of some of the juniors over the recent summer months may I add a word of encouragement to them and our thanks to their coaches, parents and mentors? Hopefully the youngsters will look back fondly at their early golfing days at Milnathort Golf Club.

Attendance for the Seniors Medals on Thursdays has averaged out at about 26 and I’m pleased to say the 9 holers are going from strength to strength at 2.00 on the Thursday afternoon although obviously we could always squeeze a “wee one in” so to speak.

Ricky Ward won the Seniors Cup on 3rd July with Phil Leiper in second place and Charlie Payne third.

Our home match against Dunning was a great success and our thanks to the catering team for rounding off the occasion. The result of 6 Nil to us doesn’t adequately reflect the enthusiastic gamesmanship involved but hey! That’s golf!

We’ve just had Round 3 of the C Macari Trophy (best 3 out of 4) and on the day Charlie Payne won with 40 stableford points, followed very closely, in fact extremely closely or even minutely closely by John Mills 38 points and Tom McMahon third with 36 points. It looks as if it will go to the final bell as the cumulative to date has John Mills on 103 points, Charlie Payne on 100 and Ian McMillan on 98……………..But who’s to say there isn’t someone lurking in the wings who has only played two rounds to date and on the final round on 4th September shoots a great score to pip the others at the post. So watch this space as they say in the newspaper world!

These were taken at the La Finca Golf and Spa Resort, near Algorfo (about 40 kilometers from Alicante), Costa Blanca,

Spain in early June. We had a great holiday, beautiful hotel, good weather, lovely evenings out at the local bars and

restaurants, great golf course with lots of bunkers and water features. We had lots of laughs, have lots of good memories

and managed to lose lots of golf balls!
