JULY, 2017 Dear Friends, As we know and can see in the photos of the July Newsletter, June was a time of many ceremonies as we brought another school year to a close. I was touched by the reception, the cards and gifts to mark the occasion of my retirement. It has been a blessing to meet and serve so many wonderful students, parents, alumni and colleagues. I will cherish many memories from my time at the Choir School. I wish all the best to Mr. Soares as he assumes duties as principal in September, knowing that you will extend to him the same support that you’ve given to me these past seven years. I will keep him and the Choir School community in my prayers. I hope everyone has a safe and rejuvenating summer vacation! Dear Friends,

As we know and can see in the photos of the July Newsletter, June was a time of many ceremonies as we brought another school year to a close. I was touched by the reception, the cards and gifts to mark the occasion of my retirement. It has been a blessing to meet and

serve so many wonderful students, parents, alumni and colleagues.

As we come to the end of the final semester of the 2016-2017 academic year, I

would like to thank each and every one of our choristers for their diligent dedi-

cation to the St. Michael’s Cathedral Basilica community. With the Cathedral

returning to a regular schedule following the renovation and rededication, our

boys have continued to provide beautiful music to both the Cathedral Basilica

and the greater community. Throughout the whole year, our boys have contin-

ued our tradition of choral excellence, including our Founders’ Day Concert,

performing with alumnus Matt Dusk at our Massey Hall Christmas Concert,

and by sharing the stage with both the Cologne Cathedral Choir and the Regensburger

Domspatzen on our triumphant Germany Tour. The school year ended on a very high note

at our Spring concert this past May where the boys performed repertoire from our memora-

ble Germany Tour.

To the class of 2017, I extend my congratulations on their recent graduation. The twenty-

seven young men who accepted their diplomas on June 23rd at the Cathedral Basilica are

now alumni of our school. We are proud of their academic and musical accomplishments

and thank them for their dedication to our mission. I wish them well on their upcoming edu-

cational and professional endeavors and trust that they will continue on their faith for-

mation to become “a man for others”. Bravo, gentlemen.

At this time, I would like to wish our principal Mr. Barry White a wonderful retirement. As principal of our school for the last seven years, Mr. White has overseen the academic opera-tions of this school with the best interests of the boys always at the forefront. A steadfast leader, his kindness and gentle guidance had no limits and he is an excellent role model of “a man for others”. It has been a pleasure working alongside him and I will miss him. On be-half of the entire SMCS community, I would like to thank Mr. White for his dedication and leadership to our staff and students. We wish him and his family well as he enters a new stage of life. We will miss you Mr. White!

Looking ahead to the fall, I would like to extend a warm welcome to our incoming principal

Mr. Linton Soares. Not a stranger to our community, Mr. Soares served as our Vice Principal

from 2014 to 2015. I look forward to working with him again as we embark on another fan-

tastic year at the Choir School.

As the summer season has arrived, I wish everyone in the SMCS community rest, time with

loved ones, and the promise of a bright year ahead for 2017-2018. Happy summer, and may

God bless you and your loved ones. I look forward to seeing new and familiar faces in Sep-

tember!

Director

SMCS Junior Elementary Volleyball

Written by: Owen McWilliam

On Tuesday, April 11th, the Junior Volleyball team travelled by

streetcar to St. Mary’s Catholic School. All of the boys were very

excited for the tournament and were all determined to fight hard and give it their all. Though

we did not win the tournament, we did amazing for a team that had many kids who never even

played volleyball. On behalf of the team, we would like to thank Mme Comeau, Mr. Humana

and Mr. Tarascio for all of their dedicated hours helping us and guiding us to do amazing at the

tournament.
