Grand Knight’s Report: Happy New Year Brothers! 2020 is upon us. What is included in your New Year’s resolutions? Eat better? Exercise more? Argue less? All of these are important and are often part of our resolutions (and should be). What about making Jesus a stronger part of your life? Can you get to Mass on time more often and stay through the end? Read the Bible more? Pray with your family? All of these make up great resolutions as well that may make the other, perhaps more trivial, resolutions easier to achieve. Perhaps come to one more Business Meeting than you did last year and pray with your Council Brothers? You are always welcome to join us, and we will share in a prayer of Thanksgiving to see you again. Our council failed to have a quorum in our last two Business Meetings, so we need you as well! As we are at a new year, our council is at another new beginning. As announced last month, we have a new Financial Secretary, but this new Financial Secretary is no stranger to any of us. Our new Financial Secretary is Past Grand Knight Joe Badowski. Joe has held just about every position available but Financial Secretary. Please take a moment to thank Joe for taking on this fresh challenge. As you know, Joe was already Two-Year Trustee and Membership Director. In accepting this role, Joe had to resign both positions. Our remaining trustees are working on identifying a replacement Trustee to take Joe’s place. Trustees must be at least a Third Degree member and preferable a Past Officer. We also need a replacement Membership Director. This role is open all members, regardless of his degree level. If you are passionate about our council’s growth, if you have ideas of how we can attract new members and engage our current membership, if you are enthusiastic about doing a great job, then perhaps you are a great candidate to take on Membership Director. Please email Grand Knight Craig Oakum at oakumc@comcast.net if you are interested in taking over as Membership Director. As you also know, January brings with it our dues notices. Prompt payment of your dues helps ensure Council 1082 can continue our good works of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism. A portion of your dues goes toward the payment of Supreme and State Council per capita assessments. As you may recall, we increased our dues last year to $40 annually, which the first increase in years. This increase will help offset last year’s increase in the per capita payments. We also ask, if you are willing, to please consider making a free-will extra donation to our council to offset our budget expenses. We are always in a

difficult state of estimating our income versus expenses, so the more we can do to offset will help your council. And remember, if you have financial difficulty that affects your ability to pay your dues, please contact our Financial Secretary for a confidential conversation. We will never suspend a member for financial reasons. You are a member of the largest Catholic fraternal organization in the world. Let us help you! Dues time is also an excellent opportunity to inform us of any changes to your contact information. Has your address, phone number, or email address changed? Our contact information is also at the top of the newsletter. Vivat Jesus! Knight of the Month Our Knight of the Month last month is one of our newest members. Vu Huynh joined our council in October as part of our annual membership drive. The next month, we asked you to email us if you were available to help sell lawn signs and car magnets as part our Keep Christ in Christmas campaign. Vu responded with a fresh idea for our council. Any of you who signed up for our Lunch with Santa and Consecration to the Holy Family in the past month know that we have moved to online signups through www.signupgenius.com, a free service where you can see who has signed up and where we need more help. This example serves as a great reason why, if you have an idea, do not hesitate to bring it to the council’s attention. The days of responding “that’s not how we do things” are over, and I thank Vu for it. Membership OPEN INCENTIVES FOR NEW MEMBERS Supreme has given State $7000 to award as they see fit, and State Membership Director, Chris Duffett, has certainly figured out how to use it! The following schedule will be used to determine which councils will win $500 at a time to be used in any way! Let’s see what we can do to win!

1. $500 to the Council in each of the 5 Diocese that brings in the most new members (min of 5) between 1/1/20 and 6/30/20........Total – $2500

2. An additional $500 to the Council that brings in the most new members for the year (min 5) between 7/1/19 and 6/30/20

3. $500 to the District Deputy with the highest percent increase in the Jurisdiction over last year between 7/1/19 and 6/30/20. In order to qualify, the District must have at least 20 new members and every Active Council in the district must record at least 1 new member. Let’s do our part to help Butch win!

4. $100 to the member in each of the 5 Diocese who brings in the most new members (min 5) between 1/1/20 and 6/30/20.............Total – $500

Warren Ave., Malvern, PA, beginning Friday April 24 through noon on Sunday April 26. A retreat at Malvern is a most unforgettable adventure due to its wooded peaceful atmosphere, inspirational conferences, private adoration, Eucharistic celebrations, opportunity for Confession and time to talk to God in nature, the chapel or the privacy of your room. We are privileged to have the Rev. James McGuinn for our Retreat Director. The Retreat House requests $250.00 for your retreat offering, the actual cost to host each retreatant. A $50.00 deposit is requested at time of registration. Thanks in part to the generosity of connections built over the years, the Council will have little expenses for this event. Also, many thanks our team of elves who helped set up, prepare food, ensure a great guest experience, and clean up -- it was a great experience working together on this. Teamwork, indeed, makes the dream work!

Community Activities Report Rocco Palmieri 973-714-7494, roccopalmieri@hotmail.com WINTER WALK 2020 Please join the fifth annual Moorestown Knights of Columbus Council #1082 "WINTER WALK" program. This is an exciting initiative for your Council and your participation will help make this a successful 2020 program. Plan to participate and enjoy the camaraderie of your Brothers and friends as you experience a cool crisp walk in our Parish Cemetery. When: January 11, 2020 @ 9:00 AM Where: Mount Carmel Cemetery, 800 E. Camden Ave., Moorestown, NJ Who Can Participate: Knights, families, Cemetery supporters, parishioners, those needing service hours, and Knights of Columbus friends. Walk Itinerary: Participants start at the Cemetery front entrance and walk the various meandering paths through the Cemetery. You will have the opportunity to observe the trees, birds, shrubbery and the unique and interesting memorials along the Cemetery pathways. As you walk the paths in the "old' section, see if you can locate the earliest grave memorial. Our Cemetery dates to the 1880's. You are also asked to pay particular attention to the exquisitely prepared Christmas decorations lovingly placed at the grave sites. Photography is permitted and encouraged. Oh....One Other Important Item: You will be given a tarpaulin at the start of your walk. As you walk through the Cemetery you are expected to drag the tarp behind you. This tarp will act as a "sled" holding the decorations you remove from each grave site along your route. When the tarp is filled you will drag it to the disposal truck where you will unload the decorations. You can then begin another walk and collect more grave decorations. Walkers will repeat this routine until all decorations are collected and loaded for disposal. Time permitting, we will also extend our "walk" to our Parish campus to remove the porch and lamp post Christmas decorations. Walker Registration: Preregistration is strongly suggested. Simply send a message, indicating your intent to participate, by return mail to Thom Scattaregia at thomarscat@msn.com or 856-235-5240. Early respondents will have the opportunity to select their walking path. Other respondents will be given an available walking route. Your participation is appreciated by our Parish, the families of those interred in the Cemetery, and our Cemetery neighbors. Reserve the date and respond promptly for a choice walking path. Your attendance will make this a successful Council event. BASKETBALL FREE THROW COMPETITION The Basketball Free Throw Championship will be held on Wednesday, January 22 at OLGC School Gymnasium. All girls and boys ages 9-14 are eligible to compete. Details will be published in the Church Bulletin and sent to local schools.

LANCERS FOR LIFE REPLACED WITH SCHOLARSHIP FUND COMEDY SHOW For the past two years, Father Chris Colavito, Chaplain at Holy Cross Prep Academy, has reached out to the Knights asking for our help to send pro-life students to the March for Life in Washington, DC. We dubbed the program “Lancers for Life” and it has been successful. However, Father has decided not to continue this program. While the impact on the students – and the community – is powerful, the cost of this one day trip is about $5000. Father explained that if we take that $5000 and apply it towards tuition assistance, we are now helping students receive a pro-life, Catholic, education. The education will have a much stronger impact on the students than the one day trip. A specific fund has been established at Holy Cross to help bring students in who otherwise would not be able to attend. Father said there are many families who come just $1000 short of the tuition. This fund will allow their students to enroll. Holy Cross has been through several changes the last few years but they are moving in the right direction. Father Chris shared that freshmen enrollment increased 27% this year. They are already organizing open house sessions for next year’s freshmen and pre-registration for these events is up 40%. And, one senior who will graduate in 2020 will be entering the seminary! Kyle is the young man’s name and we were blessed to have him speak briefly at a recent Chapter meeting. Kyle has known since he was a young child that God was calling him. He was somewhat torn this past summer between the priesthood and the medical profession. He told us that he went to pray for the Blessed Sacrament and asked Jesus what he should do. Kyle said Jesus spoke to him very clearly – “Be my priest.” What an amazing experience. Let us praise God for calling Kyle and giving him the strength to answer that call. And let’s pray for Kyle in his studies and pray for vocations! By now you must be wondering how the Knights can help. Last year, our brothers from Our Lady of Fatima, Council #7755 in Mt. Laurel organized a comedy show at Holy Cross for this scholarship fund. The event returns again on February 29, 2020. Father Chris is asking the Knights, their families and friends to support this event - and therein the school – by purchasing tickets and attending. Mark the date on your calendars now and we’ll have more information as it becomes available. Please be sure to attend our February Business Meeting and welcome Father Chris and Kyle where they will share more information with us. NEW EYES FOR THE NEEDY / USED STAMPS FOR VETERANS We are always collecting eyeglasses for the needy and used postage stamps for our veterans. Donations may be given to one of our ushers at Mass; please ask that they be given to a member of the Knights and bring them to a Business Meeting. We are planning to set up a permanent collection bin like we previously had in the Sacred Heart Room. Thanks to Past Grand Knight Angelo Sanelli for his leadership and dedication to this program. Life Activities Report Director Dave Lyzinski 630-209-0166, dlyzinski@verizon.net BABY BOTTLE DRIVE Baby Bottle Drive: The baby bottle drive is on schedule. Betty Bell will speak at some Masses and Chuck Swanson will speak at the other Masses. Thom and Maryanne Scattaregia have prepared the bottles and envelopes. We need some Knights to hand them out after Mass at whatever Mass they attend that weekend. We will have the Marty Gagnon collection receptacle in the vestibule the following week and the next week or two thereafter. Most people opt for mailing back the

envelopes, but Bill Thomas will coordinate with Thom to open the bottles and count the contents. Anyone else who wants to assist with that is welcome. We usually set up in either the Heritage House or the Quinn House. ROSES FOR LIFE Our annual Roses for Life sale is scheduled for the weekend of March 14th and 15th after all Masses. We hand out cloth lapel roses, symbolic of our pro-life beliefs, as parishioners exit Mass. Free will donations are accepted and proceeds benefit 1st Way of Burlington County. The amount we raise is directly linked to how many Knights volunteer to help with this effort. If we don’t have Knights at all exits after all Masses, some of the congregation misses the opportunity to donate. Can you stay 10 minutes after whatever Mass you attend? Maybe arrive a few minutes early and help with two Masses? Your time and effort are greatly appreciated. Signup sheets will be available during upcoming business meetings.
