Dear Friends,
As I write this missive, the sun is shining, the grass is green, and the temperature is 41 degrees! Christmas is just around the corner, New Year’s Day a week and a half away. Of course, as you read this, we will be into the Christmas Season, then Epiphany when we remember God’s revelation of the Son to all the world as first witnessed by the Magi, wise men from the East.
We bear gifts to our Lord, as did they. Our gifts may not be gold, frankincense, or myrrh, but ours are invaluable to the church nonetheless. Our gifts, too, are responses to the greatest gift we could ever hope for or imagine: the incarnation – God’s love dwelling with us and in us, not only in the babe of Bethlehem, but in the man Jesus.
Our gifts of gratitude include gifts of time and commitment to the ongoing work of the Body of Christ, his Church. We worship, sing, and pray together; we study God’s Word at home and in classes; we engage in mission and ministries of all sorts in and through our congregation and beyond in various other ways. I know that many of you serve the wider community and world through a myriad of volunteer activities. You are to be applauded!
You also share the love of God in thousands of quiet ways to neighbors and strangers alike, in grocery stores, in banks, at schools, with visitors to our area, and with next door neighbors.
In ways both great and small, we light candles that shine in the darkness in our world that would otherwise be mean and ugly. Keep it up!
And may God’s Light live on in our lives, one and all!
Yours in Light of God’s Love,
RexRex T. StewartPastor

January & February Youth and Children’s MinistriesDirector: Michelle Allen
Happy New Year! As I write this, we are still in the midst of Advent- the time of joyful waiting for our Lord, Jesus. It seems to me like the start of a new year is another time of hopeful waiting- with new dreams, expectations, and maybe a ‘resolution’ or two. Isn’t it a comfort to remember that God is with us every moment of our anticipation?
I anticipate lots of good things for Youth and Children’s Ministries in the coming twelve months. We will begin with a morning of guiding and shaping the program when the YCM committee meets on January 5th for the annual planning retreat. All are encouraged to attend- to learn more about all that we do in our ministry and to share new perspectives and ideas!
Youth Group will jump right in with a retreat of their own in January, at Camp Duffield. We are also excited for our summer mission trip to the ROC SALT Mission Center in Rochester, NY at the end of June, the Presbyterian Youth Triennium in July, and our ‘moving up’ camping trip in Au-gust. Interspersed with our spiritual development trips, we will have service projects, Faith First discussion groups, Confirmation classes, and fun fellowship. Of course, building and maintaining our youths’ faith community comes with a financial burden, so we will also be putting in extra effort this year to raise funds.
WoRM Sunday School will continue to study children of the Bible, with hand-on activities including crafts, games, drama, science, and fun with food. Many of our young children have worked hard to memorize the Lord’s Prayer and we will add a new memorization goal for those who know the Lord’s Prayer by heart: Galatians 5:22-23, fruit of the spirit.
JOY Team will continue to organize inter generational service projects. Participation and interest seem to have waned a bit, so we will be prayerfully discerning how the program can best serve our church community and our neigh-bors.
Overall, I wait with joy to see God’s work in and through each and every one of us. Let us be intentional in our attempts to grow with God together as a community in 2019!
“I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope” Psalm 130:5
Grace and peace in 2019!

Wed, January 23, 2019 at 7 p.m.Emily Levine: “How I made friends with reality”With her signature wit and wisdom, Emily Levine meets her ultimate challenge as a comedian/philosopher: she makes dying funny. In this personal talk, she takes us on her journey to make friends with reality -- and peace with death. Life is an enormous gift, Levine says: “You enrich it as best you can, and then you give it back.”
Wed, February 13, 2019 at 7 p.m.Suzanne Simard: “How trees talk to each other”“A forest is much more than what you see,” says ecologist Suzanne Simard. Her 30 years of research in Canadian forests have led to an astounding discovery -- trees talk, often and over vast distances. Learn more about the harmonious yet complicated social lives of trees and prepare to see the natural world with new eyes.
Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at 7 p.m.Theaster Gates: “How to revive a neighborhood: with imagination, beauty, and art”Theaster Gates, a potter by training and a social activist by calling, wanted to do something about the sorry state of his neighborhood on the south side of Chicago. So he did, transforming abandoned buildings to create community hubs that connect and inspire those who still live there (and draw in those who don’t). In this passionate talk, Gates describes his efforts to build a “miniature Versailles” in Chicago, and he shares his fervent belief that culture can be a catalyst for social transformation in any city, anywhere.
Many Thank You notes, cards, and calls to the Deacons have been received for their help

The flower committee wish to thank all who donated poinsettias to decorate our church for the holidays! Did you notice the new Christmas tree in the vestibule? Your flower donations each week help us to buy seasonaldecorations for the church and the outside doors.

A Holiday Love Letter to Those Who Grieve
Dear Sisters and Brothers,
Sometimes Christmas isn’t so merry. Sometimes putting up the tree is just too terribly painful. The special ornaments aren’t special anymore and hanging a wreath feels almost like betrayal.
It’s hard to deal with the death of a loved one anytime but the holidays hurt more when the rest of the world is so joyous and upbeat.
It doesn’t help when people say, “Just take one day at a time” or “remember he is in a better place.” It wouldbe better if they could acknowledge pain and loneliness and help you deal with it.
What can the people around you to do to help? Maybe they can let you remember- not be afraid when you cry- not run away when you’re sad. They can invite you for the holiday dinner and be happy if you say “yes” and respectful if you say “no” and understand if you say “yes” and then “no” and “yes” again. They could see that you don’t know what you are doing right now- just trying to... just trying to... you’re not sure what!
What can you do for yourself during these “not so happy holidays” when you are wearing your loneliness around your neck and hurting has a ribbon on it?
You can do the best you can. Follow your own grieving path not what other people think is the right way. Cry when you need to- laugh when you can. Find someone who needs a phone call or a funny card and take care of their need.
Faith helps. You can decide to believe that God has a new and better plan for your life. Pray that He shows it to you soon.
Scripture says in several places that God takes special care of “widows and fatherless children.” Claim that promise. Ask Him for His help. Wish Him “Happy Birthday” and cry on His manger. He has your back. You are His special child.
Somehow- somewhere- this too shall pass. God speed fellow travelers. Love, Phyllis Norwich
