John Heffernan Author Visit
This week Year 4 and 5 students have had the opportunity to attend creative writing workshops run by author John Heffernan. Students eagerly participated in a series of short writing activities and enjoyed the opportunity to ask a real author a variety of questions about the writing process. John also read excerpts to the students from several of his stories. An enjoyable session was had by all. John will be available for book signings at the Dust Jacket this week if students would like to purchase a copy of any of his books. The school library also has a copy
of all of his books for students to borrow.
Book Week –Story Country
Next week is Book week. This year the
theme is Story Country. To celebrate, IPS students
can dress up as their favourite book character on
Wednesday 24th August. There will be a Book Week parade at 9:30 followed by
a shared reading activity between primary and infants classes. Students can
bring their favourite book to read. Prizes will be awarded for creative and original
costumes. (Please do not purchase an expensive costume, often simple ideas
are fantastic). There will be Book Week activities in the library all week
celebrating shortlisted books and reading.
Dental Van Visit
Thank you to the University of Sydney and Armajun Health

Excursion Year 5-6
This term 4/5D has been reading the rich text 'Finder's Keepers' by Emily Rodda. The story revolves around the character Patrick, who has been given the chance to become a Seeker and travel into Parallel Universes to find certain lost items. The students have delved into the topic of time travel and posing the questions “Would it be
possible?' and 'What time period would I like to visit?' Our creativeness has exploded and we have transformed our room into a Parallel Universe, designing the main characters and travelling into an unknown time eras.
Our writing in this topic has erupted and our imaginations have been unleashed! Look at our 'hooks' 'Silky air flows through my body; glittering stars light up the cold winter's sky.' Ruby Fuller
'Trails of friendship takes over the bumpy solid barrier.' Jessie Daemon 'Steam engine rust against time; crumbling bare feet scatter along the crusted wall.' Brodie Snaith
'Splashing dots fill the night’s sky like glitter on a piece of black paper'. Zach Wemyss
Sport News
On Tuesday, a fantastic group of students from Years 3-6 were selected to go to a Touch Gala Day at
Kamilaroi Park. There was a lot of tough competition from schools in our area,
keeping all of our students on their toes. We had
a big win with most of our seven teams going
home undefeated. Everyone had a great day and
showed a tremendous amount of pride in their red
and white uniforms. Thank you to everyone who
came to support us and the wonderful group of
students who played! Great work!

Let’s Celebrate Attendance Hints and Tips
No. 3: Writing Notes
Parents or caregivers are required by
law to provide an explanation to the principal to say why
their child was absent from school.
A note of explanation should contain:
1. Date that the note was written;
2. Child’s name;
3. Days/dates the child was absent from school;
4. The reason the child was absent;
5. The signature of the child’s parent or caregiver.
If more than one child from the same family has been
absent a separate note for each child should be written.
A note should be brought to school on the first day the
student returns to school after an absence. Your school is
required to investigate all unexplained absences (where a
child has been absent and no explanation has been
received) within two days. Did your child give the note to
their teacher? This can sometimes be a problem with
younger children.
