President’s Report

Ho Ho Ho Members,

Tis the start of the summer season & is on his way to all you good club members.

I can’t believe the season is approaching the halfway point. With just 10 events left on the calendar we are soaring through. It seems like yesterday we had the AGM and end of year dinner at the Black Buffalo and the first ride of the season on the magnificent Huon River.

I wish each and every one of you a joyous and very happy and safe time for you all over the Christmas and New Year period. Please take care of your loved ones especially the children who are most at risk at this time around water and other festive activities around your home and those of others.

Remember to drink responsibly and don’t risk your life or the lives of your family and the families of others on the road around you by drink driving should you think you may be over the limit.

If you haven’t already checked your craft and the safety equipment make sure you do it before you set off for the Christmas break.

Reminder to take a look at the MAST video around Water Safety and the safe operating of a PWC made in recent years with the help of club members. http://www.mast.tas.gov.au/guides/safety-tips-operating-pwc/ Pete Jones President TJSBC

Radio Information Night by Carolyn

“TMR, TMR, this is RG655, this is RG655….”

“RG655, this is TMR…go to Channel 78….”

“RG655, this is TMR on Channel 78. Good morning, Go ahead please”

“TMR, we’ve just departed Rosny boat ramp heading to Kettering. ETA 11.00am. We’re three jet skis with 4

POB [people on board]. We will report when we arrive”

“RG655, received”.

“TMR, RG655 arrived Kettering. All vessels present and accounted for”

Radio Info Night proves invaluable

In early December, 17 members attended a radio information evening, hosted by Barry McCann, co-founder of

Tas Maritime Radio (TMR). We learned heaps!

TMR has been operating for 40 years and its primary principle is “to relieve anxiety on anyone’s part” –

whether that’s yours when you are out on the water, or your family’s when they’re on shore and you’re not.

TMR operates 11 bases around Tasmania, from Maatsuyker Island to Three Hummocks to Flinders. Some bases

are owned by TMR, others are owned by MAST. TasNetworks and Telstra also recognise the benefit of TMR’s

network and contribute sites, buildings and in some cases, surplus gear to keep TMR operational, which is a

real credit to their passion and professionalism in these days of tight corporate dollars.

VHF Channel 16 is monitored 24/7 in Tasmania which is the only state in the country to boast such cover.

Volunteer operators staff the radio room from 7.00am – 7.00pm each day, after which TasPorts security staff

take over for the night.

We learned a host of important things over during the 2.5 hour session.

1. When out on your own or on a private ride, call up TMR on Channel 16 to initiate contact. The operator will

ask you to change to another station (typically 78) to log your ride details. You can then monitor both Ch16

and another ship-to-ship channel or simply keep a listening brief on Ch16.

2. If you monitor dual or tri stations, take particular care to cancel the scan to ensure you transmit on the

channel you intend to

3. In Australia, you MUST select “International (Int’l)” mode on your radio. The other choice is usually US (as

in USA) but channels on this mode can have a different operation (simplex vs duplex), meaning you will not

be receiving/transmitting as you think you are.

4. Always store your radio handset/microphone in a cradle to prevent it getting stuck on accidentally. This

blocks other transmissions and stops people contacting you as well.

5. Scheduled weather forecasts for all coastal areas are available on Channel 1 at 0745hours, 1345 hours and

1733 hours. After that, TMR will invite position reports from HF radios firstly and then VHF radios on

channels 67, 68 and 69. Choose the best signal for your radio and respond when there’s a break in others

transmissions. Just give your call sign/ski identification first up – not all your position details. TMR will call

Page 3: Newsletter - Jetski Tasjetskitas.com/newsletters/l.December 2016.pdf · 2016-12-16 · you back for more info as soon as they can. As well, before you transmit, listen for a moment

you up when it’s your turn to report. This allows them to record all vessels who are trying to make contact

and then permit reporting in an orderly manner.

6. There’s quite a bit of protocol for emergency/distress calls. Learn these and be prepared to answer

additional questions to establish the call as legitimate rather than a hoax.

7. Keep these simple things in mind:

Mayday, Mayday, Mayday is for imminent threat to life only (eg washed up on rocks in big surf)

PanPan, PanPan, PanPan is for non-immediately life-threatening events (eg, lost power and are

1km off the rocks)

Report your position in relation to a well-known landmark that others in the area are likely to

recognise. Don’t bother with Lat and Longitude at this stage. Better to say something like, “Yellow

jet ski off south-west coast of Tasman Peninsula, 1km off Shipstern’s Bluff, 2 passengers with

orange PFDs, drifting towards Wedge Island, planning to let off yellow flare….”

Open your Squelch to give yourself the best chance of hearing weaker signals responding to your

call

If you aren’t getting a response, keep repeating your message – it may be you are transmitting but

not able to receive.

If you decide to try another channel to get a response, explain this in your message before you

switch so that others listening can follow you to new channel.

Don’t throw your radio away if no one responds. Again, keep trying as others may be able to hear

you.

8. If another vessel is in distress, TMR will call “All Ships” in the relevant area. TMR will not instruct you to

attend or assist. As “pilot in command” of your ski, it is up to you to assess your safety and capability in the

circumstances. If you do decide to assist and circumstances change, simply tell TMR that you need to

abandon assistance.

9. Be patient when calling TMR. Unbeknown to you, there may be many other vessels calling in. TMR will call

you back for more info as soon as they can. As well, before you transmit, listen for a moment to avoid

cutting in over someone else.

10. Presently there are no channels dedicated to club events, whether these are sailing races, kayak events or

jetskitas events. But this is expected to change in 12 months’ time with a proposal being considered to

reallocate new and some existing channels. More info will be received in time.

Many club members elected to support TMR to provide its services by joining up. It is not necessary to be a

member to use TMR services. However, becoming a member buys you a call sign (RG ###) with your ski

details registered with TMR to speed up identifying you on radio contact with TMR.

The Committee anticipates that the designated Ride Coordinator//Ride Leader will log Club on-water

events with TMR, on behalf of all skis in the group. The Ride Coordinator/Leader will then report status to

TMR enroute as necessary and log out at the end of the ride.

TMR can be contacted at: tasmaritime.com.au. Take a few minutes to read what they do and how

membership could benefit you, particularly if you do lots of riding in smaller groups or alone.

Barry has agreed to run a course for Club members in the North in the new year. We may need members

to be flexible in regard to date and time location but will follow up this in January.

RG655 out….

Getting to know our club members

Maddy Pillans

In a paragraph tell us about yourself…. I’m a bartender by day and lawyer by night, or something like that. I’ve recently finished my degree in International Relations and Law and have been admitted as a lawyer. As most lawyers are, I can be quite opinionated and am always up for a chat about politics, the future of the world or a range of other topical and controversial issues. I love to travel and have spent time in Europe, Asia and East Africa. Travelling always reminds me how lucky we are to live in Tassie and I am trying to spend as much time getting out and about, on the water or on the road, and seeing our beautiful state before I head off to the mainland next year to start my adult career! What is your personal philosophy? Nothing worthwhile is easy What is one thing you couldn’t live without? Cheese. Really, there is no situation where cheese isn’t appropriate. What is your favorite TV show/ food? Grey’s Anatomy. I’m a sucker for trashy tv. What is your greatest fear? I have terrible issues with ants and flies. They’re small and have too many legs; they give me the creeps. If you could do another job for just one day, what would it be? International journalist Tell us something about yourself that might surprise us. I am the proud owner of a Harley Davidson 883 Sportster!

Thanks Maddy

Getting to know our club members - Anne Flint

About Anne I was born and bred in Devonport, my parents wanted me to go to boarding school but I suffered from home

sickness so I convinced them not to send me. I opened my own optometry practice in Ulverstone 11 years ago

after working for someone else for more years than I care to recall. I am the proud mother of two boys aged

28 and 24. I love travel and have been lucky enough to have travelled to Europe, SE Asia, Japan, China, NZ,

Canada and US, the latter 3 with Ian. Photo attached represents one of my first jet ski rides which was from

Bicheno to Wineglass Bay. I recently obtained my jet ski licence, so jet skiing will become a new pass time of

mine (thanks to my wonderful man).

Philosophy

When life threw all the bad things at me I could sink or swim and I decided not to just swim but to do the

butterfly......

What can I not live without

Apart from the obvious being my boys, Ian and my wonderful friends I would have to say my pillow and if

possible it travels with me.

Favourite TV show and Food

Sadly it’s the food shows MKR and Master Chef, my favourite food being Roast Pork with heaps of crackle,

favourite snack has to be Samboy BBQ chips.

Greatest Fear

My greatest fear always has been birds flying at me and all my clothes suddenly disappearing and standing in

front of people I don't know naked or perhaps worse people I do know!!!!!!

If I could do another job

I would be on the checkout at the supermarket so I could see what everyone else buys in their groceries!! It

intrigues me what people purchase.

What might surprise us

I am a bit of a home body and a total sook when it comes to something sad or someone else being unhappy, I

cry at anything sad and I wish I didn't.

Thanks Anne

3rd December Port Sorell to Devonport

written by Michael “Bang” Pursell

We met at Shearwater beach then left there after a good but quick meeting and got underway for our

ride to Devoport, it was a beautiful day with a little bit of wind but that made it even more fun.

We got so far along then stopped to let some of the others catch up, which gave us time for some

wave jumping, which was a whole lot of fun!

After regrouping we were ready to continue our journey up the river, the best view ever and the ride

back was pretty much wave jumping the whole way back, it was awesome fun and we finished off the

day with some time trials.

I would like to thank the Jetski club, as this was my first ride and it was amazing, I had heaps of fun

and it was like one big happy family..it was like a dream come true and I really loved it, thanks

everyone.

Well done Bang!

4th December Lake Barrington by Ian Macleod

For some it was an arrival at the Lake around midnight following the Christmas dinner, for others it was around the advertised time of 9pm while others delayed their arrival as they explored unknown roads seeking out the right ones to get them to the ramp. I think Tal has a talent for taking a different route following on from yesterday’s time trial course. The overnight campers (including Matt & Deano) completed their breakfasts and were in the water before most of us arrived. Eventually we were all assembled for an on water briefing in the middle of the lake on a perfect morning on dead flat water. Anne Flint, on her first club weekend since getting her license, and in command of her brand new GTX, joined me as ride leader. First destination was to visit the Forth Falls where a number of people took the chance to get close and personal and also a little wet. A good rinse to all parts of the ski following yesterday’s salt water ride. We were a little unenthusiastic at the thought of the 5-knot crawl past the rowing course, but as there were no rowers out we were able to pass by at a more comfortable pace. A visit to the upper reaches of the lake which is overlooked by Cethana Dam is always rewarding before turning to head to the other extreme where Devils Gate Dam turned the Forth River into Lake Barrington. At its deepest my depth sounder indicated 70 metres of water was underneath us. It was time for a group photo with a line up in the middle of the lake. Most seemed to manage to manoeuvre into a line, but Ken took great delight in keeping everyone waiting while he tried to position the Yammie. At the same time the line of skis was being turned like a Catherine Wheel as those arriving on one end turned the whole line, just meant Tal had to keep moving to keep out front and get the shot. With few other lake users about it was time for some freestyling by a number of members, who had been very restrained and placid for most of the day. This of course assisting the rinsing process as skis were buried in the fresh water. Eventually we all headed back to the ramps and packed up. The smell of the BBQ from the early lunches drew us all together for a final gathering before we all headed our separate ways to prepare for the next ride. So ended a fantastic club Christmas weekend that is a credit to so many dedicated members. In particular, we appreciate the efforts of locals Justin Schmidt and Dave Gray for their hard work pulling everything together. As usual there were a host of willing helpers on and off the water that I will not name as I would miss some! Thank you to everyone that supported this event and made the day such an enjoyable one.

Christmas Dinner

@ The Elimatta Hotel by Tal

Wow what a full on weekend it was in the North West as Part of the clubs Christmas weekend.

Thanks to all of you who came to the Christmas dinner at the Elimatta Hotel on the banks of the Mersey River

in Devonport. It was a well attended dinner with lots of friends busily talking and enjoying each other’s

company after a fantastic day both on and off the water.

The evening was kicked off with a warm welcome by our President Pete Jones and followed by a few

announcements regarding the days results, from Time Trials in both the beach and on water events.

The beach event was the brain child of Justin Schmidt and with the assistance of some other members who

helped set it up and administer the judging and measurement of the obstacle course, it was very rewarding to

see our members sprint around the course in around 60 seconds while still wearing ride gear including wetsuits

and in some cases even a PFD. I had my first attempt ever at a time trial….albeit making up my own course…at

least I was consistent for the 3 laps! It was good to see the girls Kirralee, Anne and I get in there and have a go.

I had to laugh at Dave Bramich when he also did his own course…..some of us just can’t help to mix it up a bit!

The staff at the Elimatta were very accommodating around the speed of service and the very high quality meals

were a big success. Ken had special dietary requirements on the night and received a specially prepared rubber

chook and 2 chips…..1 of which was swooped on by a low flying president.

I was stoked to have won the lucky door prize which was kindly donated by Launceston Yamaha….a brand new

Yamaha pfd (I had eyed these off when Dave and I visited Launceston Yamaha a while back!) couldn’t believe I

had sat in that lucky seat! Thank you Launceston Yamaha…. I shall wear it proudly!

Secret Santa had some help from a couple of young elves distributing the table of presents to all on the night.

Thanks Jes and Bang. The evening’s formalities were closed out with the unveiling of the clubs rebranding to

Jetskitas and the launch of the new jetskitas.com website….check it out!

The old sites are still linked to the new sites as part of the rebranding. Thanks to the dedicated team…. Dave

Tunks and Tiger Bytes, Mitch, Deano, Matt and Josh, for all their hard work that made this crisp and fresh look

possible via a smooth transition….the end result speaks for itself….so thanks again guys for all working together

to make this positive change possible.

“PWCs owned and operated by our Members”

Just a reminder to re-register your ski, as

registration expires on 31st December 2016

for all water craft.

Regular inspection and routine maintenance of your ski and trailer is a

safeguard for you and a vital step in ensuring you make it to the ramp,

launch and have a great trouble free day on the water, but also allows

you to return home at the end of the trip without undue anxiety and

stress that comes with a mechanical breakdown during the journey. An

all too common cause of road stress can be loose wheel nuts and a

runaway wheel or in this case a wheel bearing failure for whatever

reason. The correct 2 piece marine seal and bearing tension with

sufficient amounts of grease for lubrication can assist in preventing

scenes like this on the side of the road impacting the memories of your

time away with the ski caravan or any other type of towing you may be

involved with………. Safe and happy travels.

km of exposed water to cross. If you feel you and your ski are capable of completing this ride but

have not fulfilled the criteria you may consult the ride coordinator for this event and state your

case. Please do this no less than 2 days prior to the ride. THE RIDE COORDINATORS DECISION IS

FINAL.

a minimum of 40 litres extra fuel to complete this ride, you must have an adequate method of

carrying additional fuel, A lot of skis are now carrying long distance fuel tanks with a capacity of

Ride Summary. We will depart promptly at 8.00 am from Margate and head to the top of Bruny Island (Dennes

Point) then travel down the eastern side of the island Past Yellow bluff then onto Cape Queen

Elizabeth at the Northern end of the neck, then continue south to Beautiful Adventure Bay,

continuing on to the southern tip of Bruny at the Friars, where we will see an abundance of

wildlife, caves, passages and blowholes. Up into Cloudy Bay for a lunch stop if weather and

swells permit. Leaving cloudy bay we will head to the western most tip of the island and past the

amazing Cape Bruny light house built in 1836 by convict labour, it was built at the cost of 2500

pounds and was designed by architect John Lee Archer and was first lit in 1838 serving as

Australia’s longest continuously manned light . Bet you didn’t know that. Anyway when we

finally get around it we will head up the channel past Great Taylors Bay and onto Lunawanna

and further to Allonah and maybe a quick pit stop at the pub for a ---- then on to Great Bay and

up the Channel past Gordon Kettering and the drag to the finish at Margate. When all the skis

are out of the water, debrief will consist of a few coldies at the ramp please bring some.

What to bring. Bring plenty of sun block, bring your favourite lunch and drink, warm clothing just in case Hobart

pulls a wildcard, if you carry a marine radio that would be handy and if you are blocking you’re

your accessibility to your tow line and fire extinguisher due to your fuel load, please stow these

items in another compartment.

Safety. All Mast safety approved equipment must be carried on this ride, please check the MAST

website for your requirements.
