I believe there is a gender imbalance on the technology commiee, so it would be good to see a female computer wiz give Bill, Paul and Howard a bit of company. Message from the President

Newsletter July 2019

- Chris McDowellHello from exile.

As I write I believe that BBC members are all freezing while I am basking in glorious 25 to 30 degrees and clear blue skies. Whoever said Switzerland is a cold country was misguided. Had a few games of Bridge here, a number of other BBC members here as well as an English lady that I partnered (thanks Marjorie for teaching me Acol, it came in handy).

I have been sneaking a look at scores and I am pleased to see that nothing is predictable and anyone can get a good score. A little birdie told us how well Janet and Eric did at Gold Coast, and also how well Winston and Paul did at Grafton. Congratulations! If there are other good results about which I know nothing, forgive my lack of information.

I trust that you are all being well behaved on new driveway entrances and that Paul is keeping a tight watch. I look forward to seeing how it looks and works when we return early July.

I was disappointed to see that the Thursday open section is to be axed. Oh well Howard, we tried, it wasn’t supported as well as hoped, that is that. Back to the way it was for three Thursdays a month. I will miss you gals and guys in the Thursday crowd when I return and

look for another day to play (or go cycling).

It seems to be that by the time you read this we can say … next month is August! I do not know how many of current Management Committee members are planning to nominate to continue, I hope most will, as there is a great bunch of skills and goodwill there. This wonderful team has gained a lot of experience in a short while and have lots to contribute. I will be retiring from role of President at the end of this term. I will devote more words at a later date to tell

more about what a privilege it has been.

So, please consider whether you might like to make a contribution next year (starting September), if not on the Management Committee, then perhaps on a sub committee. I believe there is a gender imbalance on the technology committee, so it would be good to see a female computer wiz give Bill, Paul and Howard a bit of company. I believe there is a gender imbalance on the house committee as well as no coordinator, surely there is a male in the club capable of making a contribution there!

See you all soon.

Rank PromotionsCongratulations to the following who have achieved rank promotions at end June:

Graduate: Nardia Darnell

Local: Bill Thorne

Regional: Sue Perry

Bronze Life: Deborah McLay

GRAND: Paul Smith

Events Gone: 1. Australia Wide Novice Pairs

Thursday May 30: As we went to press last month results Australia-wide were still being finalised. Now final, our Top 2 placed Pairs, who will receive red masterpoints were:

Under 50 masterpoints: Jeanette Walker & Ken Jones (57.9% and 99th in this category)

Under 100 masterpoints: Margaret Faulks & Robert Eldridge (57.2% and 222nd overall)

For full results go to: http://www.australianbridge.com/2019AWNP.php?club=2-016

Players will find a personal results booklet and further board-by-board analysis (i.e. lots of good feedback) as well as details of discount offers for all participants.

Over 1430 (interestingly a slam score!) pairs took part across Australia. And ‘Well Done’ everyone who participated.

2. Queen’s Birthday Teams

Monday June 10: This was a great Club day; a great turnout with 22 teams and some surprise winners. Many thanks to: Liz Jeffery our Event Organiser and especially for encouraging newer players to ‘join-in’; and to Rebecca Rogers our ‘unflappable’ Director of the Day. You’ll find Liz’s report with photos on pages 9-10.

3. Country Teams Northern Zone Final

June 29/30 at Coffs Harbour: 3 Ballina teams competed with 9 other teams from the Northern Zone of NSW. The format was a 2 section round robin on the Saturday, with the top 2 teams from each section progressing to a final on the Sunday.

At the close of Saturday, Judy Forsyth’s team (Judy, John Paynter, Graham Carson and Chris Hughes) topped Section B with Howard Jeffery’s team (Howard, Liz Jeffery, Paul Smith and Winston Guymer) 2nd. Unfortunately in Section A my team (Eric Hurley, Gary Lynn, Marjorie Askew and Bill Powell)

just missed out on 2nd place by 1VP.

The Final on Sunday was also a round robin with 3x14 board matches. Judy Forsyth’s team were victorious with a team from Armidale coming second. Very Well Done to Judy, John, Graham and Chris who played great bridge all weekend. They now go forward to the State Teams Final to be held at the NSWBA in November (15-17).

Congress News: Some great performances from Ballina members:

Grafton Swiss Pairs

June 15 & 16: Finishing 1st were Winston Guymer and Paul Smith with Gary Lynn and Anne Riley 2nd. Winston and Paul came home with big wins in the closing 6 rounds (ex 11); Gary and Anne had been unbeaten over the first 8 rounds – until the head-to-head with Winston and Paul. Winston and Paul also came third in the Nambucca Swiss Pairs.

Gold Coast Graded Pairs

June 15: Open: 2nd Eric Hurley and Janet Brown; B Grade 3rd Maureen Baker and Clive Klugman

Gold Coast Graded Teams

June 16: B Grade 1st: Maureen Baker, Clive Klugman, Graham Carson and Chris Fraser (Tweed BC)

Events Ongoing: 1. Fall into Winter Graded Pairs

Wednesdays May 15, June 19 & July 17: One round to go and note it’s your best 2 scores to determine overall winners (Open and B Grade) so ‘anyone’ (ie if you have one score in so far) can win with a good (or perhaps great) score in the final week.

2. Pairs Championships:

Unfortunately Kallum Fidoe from Jetts was unable to join us on Thursday June 6; they were in the throes of moving/settling in to their new location at Ballina Central. However Lorraine Bryant, our Director of the day, stepped in to do the lucky score draws and the winners from our Restricted event are:

February: Hilary Kerr and Denice Richards

March: Wendy Gleeson and Eda Bridgeman

April: Ange Bettess and Dian Kruse

May: Betty Johnson and Aida Kennedy

We’ll now look forward to some photos of our newsletter editor, and others, working out at Jetts!

If you haven’t yet collected your Jetts Vouchers please see Lorraine Bryant. Remember if you really don’t think ‘gyming’ is for you, you can pass your voucher on to a friend or family member.

3. Thursday Club Session:

As advised by email, the Thursday Open session has been cancelled as numbers were insufficient to sustain a separate open section. You may recall this was introduced around the beginning of the year to offer an extra session for ’open’ players at their Club, and also to boost the director pool available for Thursday sessions.

Regarding Thursday directing, Lorraine Bryant and Eda Bridgeman seem to carry much of the Thursday load with a little help from President Chris. In case of back-up the Play Committee and Directors Committee have agreed that if an ‘open’ Director is needed to help out on a Thursday, the Director may play in the session and will partner an ‘inexperienced’ player; the Director will not receive any masterpoints. We’ll see how this unfolds. Hopefully too, some regular Thursday players will be

considering Howard’s upcoming initiative re director training. It certainly seems like we can never have too many directors to cover all our Club sessions.

For open players looking for another session why not give Tuesdays a go? Yes, I hear it is a strong-ish field, but a few of our less experienced players are going along, are enjoying the ‘tougher’ bridge and hopefully learning from this, AND are sometimes in the masterpoint ‘money’.

Events Coming Up:1. GNOT Teams Club Qualifier

Sundays July 7 & !4: Looks like we will have 14 teams competing in our Club Qualifier of this national event: The Grand National Open Teams. And it’s great to see some of our less experienced players having a go. Hopefully everybody taking part will ‘bank’ some gold points.

The format will probably be a round robin with 9 board matches, 7 matches in Week 1 and 6 matches in Week 2. Janet Brown is directing in Week 1 and Peter Corlis in Week 2. Clive’s team has the boards organised so we are set to go...... If you are playing please help with cakes and nibblies for grazing on; we aim to have some snacks and a drink at the end of Week 2.

Thanks to Judy Forsyth for coordinating this event at our Club. Judy’s next challenge, as the Northern Rivers GNOT Coordinator, will be the Regional Final which Ballina will be hosting on October 20 and 27. The top half of the field from our Club Qualifier is eligible to progress to the Regional Final; then next stop is the National Final at end November.

2. Gala Teams Night

Thursday July 18: If you’ve not yet nominated you may need to get your name in quick. And please let Eric Hurley know if you can help with catering.

3. Teams of Three

Monday July 22: Our second Team of 3 event of the year – see poster on page 16. Nominate on the noticeboard for this very popular event. Teams are organised to ensure all have a mix of bridge abilities. Lorraine Bryant is our Event Organiser.

4. NSW State-wide Pairs

Wednesday July 31: This is a state-wide event, similar to the 3 x Australia-wide (graded) events we hold through the year, so played in the comfort of our Club. Green masterpoints are awarded on the day and then red masterpoints (at Congress B4 level) when scores are compared state-wide.

Cash prizes are awarded as well as gift vouchers from the Bridge Shop and certificates for Club winners. Prizes are also awarded in the divisions of Under 25, Under 50 and Under 100 masterpoints, as at 30th June 2019.

There is an entry fee of $4 per player (ie on top of your table money). This covers the hands commentary booklet that all participants will receive after the event, prizes, masterpoints and of course event running costs.

This event will be run as a separate section on the day. I am posting a nominations sheet on the noticeboard so we can get a good indication of numbers (for ordering hand booklets etc) but it is likely late nominations on the day will be OK.

For more information on the event go to: http://nswba.com.a u / to u r n /state / 2 0 1 9 / d o c s /StateWidePairs_Invitation_2019.pdf

5. State Open Pairs

Wednesdays August 7 & 21: ALL players on these days will be taking part in our Club Qualifier of the State Open Pairs Championships. However, no need to feel intimidated, it is essentially just like a ‘normal’ Wednesday session, but with red points awarded at state championship level.

All players taking part in the Club event are then eligible to compete

in the State Finals, which will also incorporate the Country Open Pairs Championships, to be held at NSWBA on November 23 and 24. For more information go to: http://nswba.com.au/tourn/state/se.asp?Y=2019&E=sop

(Looks like Wednesdays are getting a double ‘whammie’ of ‘external’ events with 4 and 5 above. But Saturdays and Thursdays will have their turn too in the coming months.)

AND ADVANCE NOTICE FOR ‘THE CUP’. The inter-club event with the Gold Coast Bridge Club will be hosted by us on Sunday September 22. So make sure this date is in your diary. We will field 3 teams of 4 in each of 3 masterpoint divisions: probably <200, <600 and Open.

We won the Cup last year and I am confident we will hold on to it.

A BIG Thank You: Chery McCallum has served as Secretary to the Play Committee for some 10 years but has now decided to hand-over-the-reins; to hopefully enjoy a well-earned break and perhaps do some travelling. Many thanks to Chery for all the time and effort she has put in to this role. Michel Boyle has put his hand up to take over from Chery. The next Play Committee Meeting is on Saturday July 6 at 9.00am.

Masterpoint Q & As - by Marjorie Askew

There have been a couple of recent queries so I checked these with Bill Powell our Masterpoint Secretary.

Red Points

1. When should I see my red points on my masterpoints account?

Red points are submitted by the Club Masterpoint Secretary mid month for approval by the State Masterpoint Secretary. They are for the 4-ish week period up to the middle of the current month. Following approval they should then appear on your masterpoints statement when the ABF website is updated which is usually on the 1st of the following month and usually around 4pm (as long as the 1st does not fall on the weekend).

However, if the red point event is a special, state, or national event, these points are submitted by the event organiser and only when the event is fully completed. For example: if you play in the forthcoming State Open Pairs event at Ballina BC in June the red points won’t be submitted, by NSWBA, until after the finals in Sydney in late November.

2. What is a ‘master’ factor?

When the Club holds a red point event that is restricted by masterpoint standing, for example in a ‘Graded’ session/event, or in our Thursday afternoon sessions, a master factor is applied to the standard masterpoint award. The factor is determined by the median ranking of the entrant field. For a red point session for our Thursday afternoon field the master factor is currently 0.65.

The Director-of-the-Day may not be familiar with all these master factors when uploading scores to the website but the Masterpoint Secretary makes sure these are applied before submitting the red points for approval. For more information go to: http://www.abfmasterpoints.com.au/mpmanual/html/mpmanual.htm

There is no master factor for green point sessions/events.

If you have more ‘general’ masterpoint questions please email these to Bill ([email protected]) perhaps for inclusion in future newsletters. (Or you may be able to find the information on the ABF masterpoint website: http://www.abfmasterpoints.com.au )‘The Cup’

Judy Forsyth has made a major contribution to the Ballina Bridge Club in several key roles and was made a Life Member largely for her 10 years as Chair of Play.

Judy is nudging on becoming a Grand Master, needing only some extra gold and red points to achieve this.

As Judy says about herself, “What you see is what you get”, but is better known for her catch phrase “shit happens”. And we are all enriched by Judy being a member of our Club.

Member Profile - Judy Forsyth (Gold Life Member)

by Robert Eldridge

What are you most excited or passionate about?

Would you believe ……… Bridge! However, my family does come first.

What are the goals you personally hold?

To enjoy every moment of every day, no matter what is tossed my way.

Have you had any life changing experiences that have put you on the path you have led?

At 42 years of age, when I was at the prime of my life – fit & healthy, busily working, with a wonderful husband and two great sons (aged 11 and 13), I fell chronically ill. I spent the next couple of years in and out of hospitals between Brisbane and Lismore, then many months in Sydney. The next few years were difficult, not just for me (initially in a wheel chair), but much more so for my extremely supportive husband and sons. Their lives were turned upside down!

Why did you take up Bridge, and what led you to keep it up?

After recovering somewhat from

my illness but still tied to my home – having been medically retired from work, Lyn Graham from the teaching team encouraged Peter to suggest I come to the next Bridge lessons.

Well, that was the beginning of the next phase of my life – it was almost as if it had been mapped out for me. The first lesson “sold” me on the game – I was hooked! I took to the game and all the challenges with great excitement. Having been a competitive sports player all my life, this was for me. I also found the new fellowship of the other players and teachers fabulous.

That was 21 years ago.

Where did you grow up, and what was it like to grow up there?

I was born in Leeton in the Riverina, the “accidental” child to three older siblings. We lived in a tiny town named The Rock, near Wagga. My fondest memory was climbing the “rock” (after which the town was named), a high, hilly, rocky outcrop on a weekend and then having a sausage sizzle at the bottom with my family. I was

fortunate as the youngest, not to endure the hardships my parents and siblings went through.

We moved to Sydney when my siblings were starting to enter the work force as jobs were scarce in a small community. However, I have always regarded myself as a country girl at heart.

What work did you undertake?

I was a primary school teacher. I had particular interest in sports and later in computer technology. My classes loved both of these, naturally.

Where and how did you meet Peter?

I met Peter when he was the North Coast Schools Sports Organizer. He was involved in supervising teams through to state level carnivals, many in Sydney. I remember making a dozen Netball skirts one year as we were in need of some new ones. Many of these trips were taken on the Gold Coast Motorail train, collecting and dropping off children at various North Coast stations to be met by bleary-eyed parents – or horror, none at all.

Peter and I became romantically linked through this interest. At the time I was teaching at Bellingen. I later transferred when we were married and finished at Teven-Tintenbar.

Do you have any family? Explain please

I have two sons, Ashley, 37 years and Bradley, 35 years. Ash lives and works in the computer industry in the United States. (I remind him I taught him everything he knows by starting him with computers at age three!) Brad lives in the Bright area of Victoria and works in the hospitality industry. Neither are married. Both are wonderful sons and men. Both ski or snowboard.

What is the best thing about Ballina Bridge Club?

The hospitality I have experienced over many years. Players are friendly and happy and have been so willing to give of their time in developing your bridge with suggestions, hints and new conventions. I hope to do the same with newer players coming through the ranks.

What are the key lessons you have learned playing Bridge that you would like to pass on to newer players?

Your bridge partner is your most valuable asset at the bridge table. Keep him/her happy with the right attitude and this will make for a great partnership. This is something to keep working at.

Forget a bad board and move on to the next hand.

Most importantly, enjoy the game and companionship.

What might someone be surprised to know about you?

I am pretty much an open book – what you see is what you get!

However, while ill, I completed many intricate tapestries. My most successful, a copy of Gainsborough’s “The Blue Boy”.

What do you do when you are not playing Bridge?

You mean there is a life outside of bridge???

I read, engage in a small amount of gardening, drive Peter up the wall and attend numerous medical appointments. I am very content when planning our next holiday with copious research.

Just a reminder...

When a contract has been reached and you are on lead, lead your card first then fuss with the Bridgemate. If you use a personal scorer, lead you card and then write the contract. The reasons are obvious and it will make for a quicker, better game all round.

Unintended Calls

Newsletter July 2019

- Howard Jeffery

The opportunities to change an unintended call have been significantly reduced with the introduction of the 2017 Laws. An error which arises because of the player’s loss of concentration as to the level of the auction can no longer be changed. This is the case even though the call may not be one which the player ever intended to make.

This point is critical as previously guidelines as to whether a bid could be changed incorporated the “never intended to make” thinking as being a valid reason why the changed call should be allowed. For example, with spades agreed as trumps, West bids 4NT,

Blackwood. East responds 5 Hearts (two without the queen). West starts thinking about whether to bid the slam or sign off at the five level. Eventually, he decides that 5 Spades is enough, and so he Passes. Even though he never intended to pass, he can no longer change the call to the bid of 5 Spades he intended. (The same restriction will apply in other similar situations: for example, when a player passes an artificial Bergen-style raise.)

I recently read one national Director’s opinion that a written bid could never be considered to be unintended. I tend to agree. The primary reason the unintended law was introduced was because of the

introduction of bidding cards. It is very easy to pull the wrong card from a bidding box but to write an incorrect bid reflects a lack of concentration.

Correction of calls of cards from dummy is limited to legitimate slips of the tongue. Loss of concentration or changes of mind are not viable excuses to correct. For instance, saying “small, I mean ace” will now mean that no change is allowed. The director can allow a change if he is satisfied that it was just a slip of the tongue. For example, a call of “small spade” while declarer is pointing at dummy’s clubs.

Queen’s Birthday Teams- Liz Jeffery

Monday of the long weekend in June dawned bright and clear and wonder of wonders there were no withdrawals from our wonderful roll-up of members – 22 teams, set for a day of bridge competing in the annual Queen’s Birthday teams. Players had generously responded to the call for culinary delights to

keep up our energy or perhaps comfort us after a poor match and Lorraine Bryant along with other volunteers kept the table brimming with goodies throughout the day. Betty Clark brightened the club with some home grown flowers.

Clive Klugman and his dealing team had supplied a huge number of boards for us to puzzle over and there were the usual number of rotten distributions and unusual combinations that kept us all on our toes. The atmosphere was one of friendship and fun. Rebecca Rogers ably guided us through the day assisted by Howard Jeffery and other volunteer directors - and our board caddies assisted by keeping the movements running smoothly.

When play finished, players were treated to a free drink and nibblies while Rebecca summarised the results.

The field was divided into three sections based on cumulative masterpoints and there were prizes for the top three teams placed in each section.

Restricted section winners were :

Margaret Flemming, Jenny Bush, Lesley Lawrence and Eileen Malabre

Second place went to Sue Burns,Kay Pearson, Peter Forsyth and Cecily Barrack

Coming in third were: Bev Peart-Kuter, Chris Pezzutti, June Orford and Carmel Pollard

Section B winners and overall winners on the day were:

Maureen Baker, Clive Klugman, William Keyte and Mike Duffin

Second place went to Margaret Wilcox, Col Macdonald, Vicki Ivosevic and Ruth Biddles

Coming in third were Lola and Nick Humphry, Ian Michelson and Richard Poole.

The open section winners were:

Lyn Graham, John Fraser, George Connell and Sue Fielder

Second place went to: Liz and Howard Jeffery, Anne Riley and Gary Lynn

Coming in third were Jenny and Greg Maley, Marjorie Askew and Bill Powell.

An encouragement award went to the team who had least luck on the day.

‘Golden Nuggets’ by Paul Smith

Newsletter July 2019

Bidding No Trumps is good for a couple of reasons. One is because of bridge scoring. You get an extra 10 points for playing in No Trumps. The other reason it is good to bid No Trumps is because it generally limits your strength and allows partner to better judge the level of the contract.

A 1NT opening for most people is a three or four point range, a good base for finding the right level. Responding 1NT to partner’s opening is normally 6-9, 6-10, 8-12 or whatever your system promises, again a good base for partner.

But, of course, there are opponents at the table as well and they also receive these golden nuggets of information. On this recent board North opened 1NT, showing 10-12 points. East/West found their eight card Major fit and settled in 3♠.

The opening lead is the ♦J, an obvious singleton or doubleton because the opponents overlead honours and the ♦10 is in dummy. North takes the Ace and continues a small Diamond, South follows confirming the doubleton, and dummy wins the trick. Now the King of trumps and a successful finesse against the Queen. The Ace draws the last trump. (Because I don’t have the 10 of trumps there

is only one way to take the finesse - just do it)

If South has the ♣Q then the correct play would be to lead a small Club from East and play the Jack from dummy. That way North has to use the Ace to win and so dummy’s King is a trick. On the other hand if South has the ♣A then the correct play would be to lead a small Club from East and play the King from dummy to win the trick.

South has Queen, play the Jack or South has the Ace and play the King. Which is it?

Time for a review. South led a doubleton Diamond. If they had the ♥AK they would have lead that suit rather than a doubleton. Does North have ♥AK? I have seen the ♦A and ♠Q for six points. ♥AK would give them a total of 13 points but their hand is limited to 12 high card points. So, North and South have one Heart

honour each. That gives North a minimum of nine points that I know about. Who has the key card, the ♣A? If North has it then that would

be a minimum of 13 points, so South has ♣A and North needs the Queen to make up to at least 10 points.

Here is the picture. North has ♠Q, ♥A (or K but not both), ♦A and ♣Q. 11 or 12 points. South has ♥K (or A but not both), ♦J and ♣A for 8 or 9 points.

The play is easy from here. A Club to the King ensures only one loser in Clubs. The first trick was lost to the ♦A and there are two automatic Heart losers. Total of nine tricks.
