NEWS FROM THE COMMUNITY

NAMI ADVOCACY GROUP UPDATE NAG ACTIVITY INCREASES!

By Gayle Giese

It’s election year! Although NAMI cannot officially endorse any candidate, we can educate them about mental health. To that end, NAGs are meeting with the candidates for the Florida State House and Senate. We are excited that some candidates are adding mental health to their platforms! The NAGs have been searching for affordable housing with mental health services and have discovered that there is a gap in housing for young adults with serious mental illness. We have aligned with the Fort Lauderdale Housing Authority and toured their well-designed community, Northwest Gardens, where Henderson Behavioral Health has some apartments. We will be reviewing the plans for Northwest Gardens in order to envision our own dream for housing for young adults in need. NAG member Donna Linn has phoned all the Assisted Living Facilities licensed for mental health and has found that very few will even consider taking people with SMI who are under 40 years old. We have also toured a few Alternative Family Homes that are run by Jewish Gulf Coast Family Services. Impressed by JGCFS staff, we have also visited one of their residential treatment centers outside Tampa. Overwhelming as it is, we plan to compile a factual list of available housing to assist NAMI families.

Broward NAGs have begun a LETTER WRITING CAMPAIGN to the opinion sections of South Florida newspapers, with copies being mailed to our legislators from the NAMI office. Advocacy topics include -: requesting that more police officers (and possibly firefighters) receive Crisis Intervention Training, requesting more funding for FACT (Florida Assertive Community Treatment) teams so they can serve more than 100 people in our county; Medicaid expansion in Florida, NAMI’s ENDING THE SILENCE program, mental health in the workplace, and the great need for Permanent Affordable Housing with supportive services. NAGs will also meet with legislators to invite them to sit on a panel at NAMI’s Mental Health Forum, to be held at a local library in October, just before the general election. You may submit questions for the panel. Submit to Broward’s Executive Director, Sandra Cumper; [email protected]. You might ask about insurance coverage, housing, mental health services, vocational and life skills training, Medicaid expansion, mental health awareness in the schools, respite care, the Baker Act, etc. What are your concerns? Join us! We need more advocates with time and energy! If you are interested in joining the South Florida NAGs, contact the NAMI Broward office: (954) 316-9907.

How can you help? Write your own letter of 150 words or less (short!) to the Voices and Opinions page of the Sun-Sentinel. Email to [email protected] Include your name, address, phone number. If you state any facts, include your source. NAGGING WORKS!

2018 NAMI Convention in

2018 NAMI Convention in New Orleans…

In a few words, the NAMI convention in New Orleans this year was fabulous in so many different ways… Being able to check-in on Wednesday at the Sheraton, be on my way immediately to a workshop, after quickly doing a registration to a group of seasoned NAMI volunteers who gave a nice program of 48 pages detailing all conferences & workshop. This allowed for a leisure creation of our itinerary, based on our needs and interest.

Kudos for this top organization, making the 4 days of convention busy but yet so informative and interesting to me, personally, after being part of NAMI for now 2 years and having participated in different classes and training. I have partaken in Peer to Peer and then Peer mentor, Advocacy for people who are in our facilities, Mental First Aid certified, as well as helping to co-facilitate the Connection groups and moving forward into other programs e.g. CIT for police officers and Ending in silence…

My attendance to this convention has enlightened my vision of NAMI by connecting many of the dots of the mental illnesses world. To complement and give us a diversity in our hectic convention schedule we had some good laughs with Clark Greg, actor yet had to overcome some personal and family struggles with mental health. Clark Greg is actually better known as Phil Coulson in the Marvel Universe, the Avengers. We also enjoyed a delicious New Orleans dinner at the banquet on Saturday night. As an awesome ending to a magnificent conference, entertainment was provided by comic, Adam Grabowski. Thank you NAMI for this wealth of knowledge.

“Volunteering for NAMI Broward has given me an opportunity to learn how important it is to educate, provide free support groups, advocate and provide information to people who are dealing with mental illness. Nami Broward has helped me realize that in most cases someone who has a mental illness needs to be aware of seeking help and being able to have family members to understand what they are dealing with. It also gives me experience in my career.”................ Jorene Pierre – volunteer
