Canberra Excursion 4/5/6

4/5/6 students travelled to Canberra 7-9 November to undertake an educational tour of the national capital. Students participated in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia's history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government contributes funding of $20 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program. The rebate is taken into account when costing the excursion and is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion. The National Art Gallery consisted of a display of poles that were painted in a set of Aboriginal patterns. Mackenzie I learned that in a Parliament meeting you cannot leave and if you are late you are not allowed in when the bells have finished being rung. Alyssah At the War Memorial I found out that people who had to detect bombs had to wear very heavy armour. Phoenix At the National Capital Exhibition I found out that Canberra was designed by Walter Burleigh Griffin and his wife Miriam Mahony Griffin. Faith If you look closely in Canberra you will see the Parliamentary triangle. Wyatt There are many different houses from different countries called embassies and if you are in trouble in a different country you can go the Australian Embassy and you won’t get into trouble for what you have done. Elizabeth.

We found our that there are dinosaurs still on the face of the Earth and they are birds. Jasper I learned that the National Art Gallery is very meaningful with every painting or piece of art we saw. Leilani There are still some dinosaurs that are alive like birds but not crocodiles. Rhani Dinosaurs still exist, they are birds because they have scales on their feet, they lay eggs and have straight legs. Katelyn At Parliament House we got to see all of the governments from the 1970’s. Bailey

C r i c k e t

Some new Kindergarten children for next year have visited us on orientation days. They settled in beautifully, and had a go at everything. My current class have made me extremely proud by being very welcoming and helpful—thanks!

Ethan from Cricket Blast is running cricket clinics with each of our classes over four weeks. The children are involved in warm-up games followed by bowling and batting skills practice. K/1 had a good time!

2/3 presented interesting arguments about whether graffiti was to be seen as art or vandalism. They offered some sound reasons for their opinions—well done! Is it art? Is it vandalism? Now THAT is an interesting question—what do YOU think?

DSTA news

Remembrance Day 2018 As the spouse of a serving member of the Defence Force, Remembrance Day is always special. But this year it was even more so. I had the privilege of working with our students to create 100 poppies for our floral tribute. As we worked together they impressed me with their knowledge and understanding of significance of the occasion. Each child showed great respect as they proudly “planted” their poppy in the lawn during our brief service last week. I hope that the memory of this year’s Remembrance Day will be one that stays with them well into the future, as it will for me.

Ready To Move Groups One of my main roles as DSTA is to support students as they transition in and out of our school. Last week I ran the first of four “Getting Ready to Move” sessions with those children who are leaving us this year due to Defence postings. Sessions include; talking about worries and how to deal with the unknown, discussing the practicalities of moving, making a journal and a treasure box, and brainstorming how to best settle into our new schools.
