Jindabyne 2018

On Saturday, 4th August, 63 students and 5 staff left for Jindabyne. The night was spent sleeping in comfort on the coaches. We stopped at Kempsey, Goulburn, Canberra and Cooma for a rest stop, then finally reached Jindabyne for lunch and a walk around on Sunday afternoon. We arrived at Jindabyne Sport and Recreation Centre where we were kitted out with snowboards, boots, skis, poles, jackets and pants. Strangely enough this caused several boys hair to change colour.

On Monday we went ‘up the hill’ for our first lesson and plenty of stacks were had by all. Getting on and off chairlifts seemed to provide staff with plenty of entertainment and the odd bit of pain.

Tuesday provided snow to below 800 metres so students awoke to snow in camp (a very rare sight) so snowball fights in pyjamas was the first order of the day.

Wednesday and Thursday saw the best snow conditions of the season with even a veteran of many Hokkaido trips calling it the “best snow ever, south of the equator”.

Friday afternoon saw the buses loaded with some very tired, but happy students. It was a pleasure to take such well mannered and wonderully well-behaved students to the ski-fields that represented Maclean High School in such a positive light. This was also noted by the staff of other schools attending camp.So a big thank you to all those who made Jindabyne 2018 a success and the 2019 trip is already booked so Year 10 students start saving now.

RYDAAll Year 10 students have been invited to attend the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness Program (RYDA) on Thursday, 23rd August. No classes will run for Year 10 students on this day. The day is fully sponsored by The Rotary Club of Maclean.

This program is a community response to the growing need to ensure appropriate attitudes and behaviours are developed by young people in relation to driving on our roads. The program is delivered by professionals working in the areas of road safety, health and driver education. The NSW Police are actively involved in the program.

The event is to be held at the Raymond Laurie Sports Centre in Yamba. Students requiring buses will be bussed from Maclean High School at 8.45am free of charge and will return in time for the afternoon buses. Full school uniform including suitable footwear will be required. A sausage sizzle is provided free of charge for lunch. Students need to bring their morning tea or may purchase at the venue. There is no cost for the bus or the seminars. All Year 10 students are expected to attend. Mrs T Kane.

RYDA Sessions

In small groups, students take part in six interactive workshops.

• Speed & Stopping On a closed section of roadway, students experience the relationship between speed and stopping distance through practical observation. Students also learn about the importance of car safety features and maintenance.

• HazardS & Distractions An interactive session where students form strategies to manage distractions and improve their hazard perception skills.

• The ‘I’ in Drive A reflective session designed to show students how their personality is an important aspect of the total road safety equation. Students self-assess against five personality areas and use this tool to analyse risky situations in cars.

• Road choices A discussion, routinely led by a Police Officer on key risk areas for young drivers and passengers. Features hard-hitting videos on decision-making and choices.

• Crash Investigators A unique opportunity for students to speak to a crash survivor about the event that changed their life. Forming an interview panel, students investigate crash factors, comparing them against the Safe System approach.

• Genevieve’s story A true story about a young driver and passenger involved in a road crash. Drawing on the story, students analyse factors including mood, impulse and planning and develop strategies for decision making in risky situations.

Road Safety Education Limited is the leading provider of road safety education for youth in Australia. The flagship RYDA Program is delivered each year to over 50,000 senior high school students from more than650 participating schools.

At RYDA, students attend six interactive sessions at a dedicated venue over the course of a school day. In small peer groups, they are challenged to change the way they think about road safety; participating in a stopping distance demonstration, devising personalised strategies, gaining an understanding of their individual risk profile, leading an investigation into a real life crash and getting tips from road safety experts on how to protect themselves, their friends and family.

RYDA gives students critical information and strategies that do not come from driving lessons, books or the school classroom.

By participating in RYDA, schools further their commitment to educating the ‘whole student’, providing a unique opportunity to learn essential life skills as they face the challenges of driving solo or as an influential passenger of a novice driver.

Now is the time to equip young people with the tools and knowledge they need to stay safe on the road.

CURE BRAIN CANCER Brain cancer kills more children than any other disease and more

adults under 40 in Australia than any other cancer, yet it receives less than 5% of Government cancer funding.

It is expected that approximately 1600 brain cancers will be diagnosed this year in Australia (that’s around 4 people every day) and nearly

1300 will die.

Donations will go to the Mark Hughes Foundation and Carrie’s Beanies4 Brain Cancer

BLIND & FLOORING CENTRE Since the 1950’s, parents have complained that “this generation of teenagers is the worst that has ever been”. Then those teenagers grow up and complain about the next generation.

In traditional parenting, we approach parenting teenagers the same old way, which lets be honest, never really works, and then we complain when it doesn’t. It’s healthy and “normal” for teenagers to manifest oppositional behaviour. If adolescents didn’t go through this important developmental stage then they wouldn’t progress to adulthood.

Workshop on

Parenting Adolescents

Presented by Dr Bob Jacobs, Author of Perfect Parents, Perfect Children

In today’s society, human beings need to go from being totally dependent children at age 12 to completely independent adults from the age of 18. That’s a lot of change in a short period of time, and in the search for their own rules, values and direction, teenagers will first challenge the existing ideas of their own family and of society.

This workshop will help parents in guiding their teenagers through this difficult and emotional time and also help ease parenting stress.
