Over the passage of time MALC added other disciplines such as Tuberculosis and Blindness Control, Maternal Child Health Care (MCHC) and Community Based Inclusive Development (CBID), with the sole purpose of serving marginalized communities. Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), like Persons with Leprosy related deformities are highly stigmatized. As per the 2017 consensus conducted in Pakistan, the total population with disabilities stood at 3.2 million, with around 66% of them staying in marginalized areas with no access to basic facilities such as healthcare, education or employment opportunities. Moreover, PWDs in urban areas are also completely excluded from social and economic participation and face barriers in every walk of their lives. Through the support of German Leprosy and TB Relief Association (DAHW); MALC’s longstanding partner, MALC was able to conclude the CBID project which successfully ran for a period of 2.5 years. 3,822 PWDs in selected project areas of Karachi were identified, registered and provided with necessary intervention in the form of assistive devices, mobility aids, house modifications, economic assistance for their own chosen income generation activity, vocational training, educational assistance, disability certificates, etc. MALC along with other network partner organizations worked collectively to create a political will for the inclusion and rights of PWDs in Sindh province . As a result, the Sindh Assembly passed a bill for empowerment of PWDs; bill consisting the right of PWDs to lead a decent life with equal opportunities and without any discrimination. MALC will continue with its CBID acitvities in Karachi, and aspires to disperse in other areas of Sindh as well. EDITORIAL

MALC has been working since 1956 towards Leprosy elimination.Over the passage of time MALC added other disciplines such asTuberculosis and Blindness Control, Maternal Child Health Care(MCHC) and Community Based Inclusive Development (CBID), withthe sole purpose of serving marginalized communities.

Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), like Persons with Leprosy relateddeformities are highly stigmatized. As per the 2017 consensusconducted in Pakistan, the total population with disabilities stood at3.2 million, with around 66% of them staying in marginalized areaswith no access to basic facilities such as healthcare, education oremployment opportunities. Moreover, PWDs in urban areas are alsocompletely excluded from social and economic participation and facebarriers in every walk of their lives.

CHEST CAMPS FOR TB DETECTIONIN SELECTED DISTRICTS OF AZAD KASHMIR, GILGIT-BALTISTAN

AND KHYBER PAKHTUNKHWAMALC in collaboration with Mercy Corps is implementing a project funded byGlobal Fund focusing on Public Private Mix (PPM) component for TuberculosisControl in selected districts of Azad Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan and KhyberPakhtunkhwa (KP). K-ELECTRIC MEDICAL CAMPIN GHARO-SINDH

MALC conducted a medicalcamp in collaboration with K-Electric under KE Ujala Projecton April 6, 2018, in Gharo,Sindh. 140 people benefittedfrom free consultations andmedicines. GastrointestinalTract Infections (GTI),Respiratory Tract Infections(RTI), general weakness andskin problems were thecommon conditions foundamong the beneficiaries.

Through the support of Caritas Pölten, Austria, MALC in collaborationwith Research and Development Foundation (RDF), Pakistan, conducted a two-dayfree medical camp on 12th and 13th of April, 2018, in Chachro, Tharparkar - Sindh.The common conditions treated were Anemia, Respiratory Tract Infections (RTI),Gastrointestinal Tract Infections (GTI), Malnourishment and Joint Pain. Thebeneficiaries appreciated the efforts of the team as there are no health facilitiesavailable in the vicinity. MALC team also gave a health awareness session andvisited the villagers’ premises. The details of the camp are mentioned below.

SBP LAUNCHES A COMMEMORATIVE COIN IN HONOUR OF DR. RUTH PFAU

The Governor, State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), Mr. Tariq Bajwa,and the German Ambassador to Pakistan, Mr. Martin Kobler,unveiled a Rs.50/- commemorative coin on May 8, 2018 at SBPHeadquarters in Karachi in recognition of Dr. Ruth Pfau’smeritorious services rendered to humanity. The issuance of acommemorative coin is of unique nature and in the past hasbeen issued only for great people like Quaid-e-AzamMuhammad Ali Jinnah, Allama Muhammad Iqbal, Fatima Jinnah,Benazir Bhutto and Abdul Sattar Edhi, which makes Dr. Pfau thesixth person for having been issued a coin in her honour. Mr.Rainer Schmiedchen, German Consul General, Mr. Ernst Hisch,Specialist Disability Rehabilitation – German Leprosy & TB ReliefAssociation Germany, Mr. Mervyn Lobo, CEO – MALC, Sr. Dr.Marie Frings & Ms. Ainee Shehzad – members of the GoverningBody, MALC, also graced the occasion with their presence. OnMay 12, 2018, a small ceremony was held for MALC staff atMALC Head Office to acknowledge the issuance of the‘Commemorative Coin’ by SBP.

CONCLUDING CEREMONY OF COMMUNITY BASED INCLUSIVE DEVELOPMENT PROJECT

MALC in collaboration with DAHW; MALC’s long-standingpartner, successfully concluded the Community BasedInclusive Development (CBID) Project on April 25, 2018, whichran for 2.5 years. With the support of the German FederalMinistry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ),there was an improvement in the quality of life of 3,822Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) through access to health,

education and livelihood activities.

MATCHBOX COMPETITION CONCLUDING CEREMONY

MALC concluded the Matchbox Competition (MBC) onApril 24, 2018 with a small ceremony at its Head Office.MBC is a fund-raising activity where students play for acause; the cause of serving marginalized communities.It was introduced by Dr. Zarina Fazelbhoy (one of thepioneers of MALC) and Ms. Safia Khatoon (a renownededucationist). This year, the Matchbox Competition wasdedicated to Dr. Ruth Pfau to honour her services forhumanity. A total of 9 schools participated in thecompetition. St. Patrick’s High School was the highestcontributor among the schools.

HIV/ AIDS WORKSHOP AT MALC

On May 3, 2018, Dr. Aftab Ahmad, Monitoring &

Evaluation Officer/ NGO Coordinator at Sindh AIDS

Control Program (SACP) facilitated a workshop on

‘Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)/ Acquired

Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)’ at MALC Training

Institute. HIV is the virus that can cause AIDS. The

workshop proved to be fruitful, as the employees

gained deeper insights into the ailment and the

misconceptions were also cleared. Today, HIV has

become from a devastating endemic to a manageable

chronic disease. In Sindh alone, 13,529 cases of

HIV/AIDS have been verified as of last year.

SON OF RENOWNED POET VISITS MALC

Mr. Murad Jamil, Principal Architect – Murad Jamil &

Associates, son of Mr. Jamiluddin Aali, a renowned

poet, recently visited MALC along with his sister Ms.

Humaira Mustafa, to pay homage to Dr. Pfau’s

selfless services. They toured Dr. Pfau’s Museum,

the wards, and also presented a cheque for Persons

Affected by Leprosy (PAL). MALC appreciates their

kind gesture.

DIRECTOR GENERAL HEALTH SINDH VISITS MALCDr. Ikhlaq Ahmed – Director General Health Sindh visitedMALC on April 27, 2018. He appreciated the efforts madeby MALC towards Healthcare and assured the continuedsupport of Health Department Sindh.

CBID WORKSHOP FACILITATED BY DAHWA two-day Community Based Inclusive Development workshopfacilitated by German Leprosy and TB Relief Association(GLRA/DAHW) was conducted at MALC Training Institute,Karachi, on 7th and 8th May, 2018. The workshop wasfacilitated by Mr. Ernst Hisch - Specialist Disability &Rehabilitation, DAHW Germany, and Mr. Prakash Wagle - CBIDAdvisor for Asia, DAHW Nepal, via skype. MALC expresses itssincere appreciation to DAHW for arranging the workshop,and hopes for a continuation in such teaching-learningworkshops.

Mr. Andreas Zinggl, ProgrammeManager Pakistan - Caritas St.Pölten, recently visited MALC onApril 28, 2018, to discuss theprogress of the projects in Karachi

MALC conducted a Leprosy and Tuberculosis awarenesssession with medical professionals at Kohi Goth Hospital,Malir-Karachi on May 2, 2018. The main objectives of thesession were to create awareness regarding the ailments,how to assess persons, and decrease the deformity andinfection rates in the community through timely referrals. Bythe end of the session, a total of 167 participants, were ableto recognize the signs and symptoms of Leprosy andTuberculosis in its initial stages. – Health Education Dept.
