“Come away… and rest for a while.”
- Mark 6:31
You haven’t heard anything for a few months, but the Pastoral Relations Committee has been
busy at work, and plans for my sabbatical, which will begin after worship on Sunday, August
18, 2013, are beginning to fall into place. Not getting the Lilly Grant we applied for has neces-
sitated some adjustments to the original plan, but here are a few things that will still occur:
For Shenkel – Shenkel will have an opportunity to have a variety of preachers fill the pulpit in
my absence, including some international guests. (I’m a little jealous I won’t be around to meet
them!) Various groups and committees will be stepping up to cover other things – all of our
ministries will continue to flourish, and new ones may even form while I’m away! The PRC is
working on a flier that will clarify who’s doing what and will answer other questions you may
have related to the sabbatical time.
For me – Thanks to the gracious hospitality of a UCC church in Morristown, NJ, I will still
have the opportunity to participate in a different and unique ministry during my sabbatical, serv-
ing as a volunteer at The Seeing Eye. While using my gifts for public speaking and spiritual
nurture, I will have the opportunity to learn from a non-church organization that excels at com-
munity outreach, fundraising, volunteer care, and helping people (and dogs!) develop their full-
est potential by nurturing the God-given gifts that lie within. During my sabbatical I will also
have the opportunity to spend time on retreat at the Monastery at New Skete, participate in some
continuing education opportunities, and just hang out with my family without having to be si-
multaneously thinking about a sermon, preparing for a church meeting, or running off for a hos-
pital visit!
I am looking forward to the gift of spiritual renewal I will receive from this temporary respite
from the 24/7 responsibilities of parish ministry. I anticipate resuming my responsibilities on
Monday, November 25 re-energized, refreshed, and ready to minister with a congregation that
has also experienced a stimulating season of spiritual growth.
More details will be forthcoming in the next several months. In the meantime, if you have any
questions, don’t hesitate to ask!
Be God’s,
Pastor Bonnie

* CUL = Communion Usher Leaders (will recruit members to assist in serving communion.)
“Flours” is a collection of pantry items or a monetary donation of your
discretion to the Cluster. If a cash donation to the Cluster is made, a
wheat arrangement will be placed on the altar. Altar flowers are
$30.00 and bulletin dedications are $6.50. Food Sculptures are also
gladly accepted.
You can also dedicate a Choir Anthem with a donation of
$30. With ever-increasing costs of choral music, this sponsorship will
help stretch our budget and continue to bring quality music to Shen-
kel. Dedicate your anthem to someone special, an event in your life, or
just to the fact that you love music. Thank you for this needed contri-
bution to Shenkel. Blue envelopes are in the Narthex for your sponsor-
ships.
The are many dates open for sponsorship and dedication during this
and the upcoming months. Please complete one of the special flower/
bulletin/anthem envelopes below the sign-up chart, enclose your pay-
ment, and either put it in the collection plate or in the Secretary’s box
by the office door. You should sign your name on the chart in the
narthex by the appropriate date after you have completed your
envelope.
HOLY
COMMUNION
Shenkel UCC celebrates the
sacrament of Holy Communion at both services
on the first Sunday of each month. This month,
communion will also be served at the Maundy
Thursday service and, of course, on Easter Sun-
day. Each time communion is served, some of
the bread and non-alcoholic wine that has been
consecrated at the altar will be saved in a travel-
ing communion kit, ready to go to the homes or
hospital rooms of members who were unable to
be present, and would like to receive the sacra-
ment. Please let Pastor Bonnie know if you, or
someone you know, would appreciate “distance-
communing” with their Shenkel Church family!

DO YOU HAVE NEWS FOR THE BULLETIN OR
THE NEWSLETTER? Just a reminder that
all bulletin announcements should be at the
church office by each Tuesday at noon to be
included in that week‟s bulletin. Newsletter
articles must be submitted by the 15th of each month to be
included in the next issue.
SAVE-A-TAPE PROGRAM
This is the easiest way to help our church financially. Just ask for a Save-A-Tape card at the customer
service spot at your local Redner’s store. Show your card at the register when you check out, then bring
your register tapes to church and deposit them in the box in the Narthex. These tapes are collected rou-
tinely, presented to the store, and Redner’s donates a percentage of your total purchase to the church.
Be careful to bring your tapes in regularly instead of saving them at home, as they do expire if not redeemed within a certain
time period. Also, please return the entire register tape. Redner’s will not accept any register receipt that has any part of it
removed.
Keep up the good work and thank you, Redner’s!

PROPOSED GAS PIPELINE…..
As some of you may be aware, Commonwealth Pipeline LLC, has expressed its intentions of building a gas transmission
pipeline through Berks and rural Northern Chester County, which will run through the Eagle Transmission station and on
to the port of DE, with the goal of exporting about 80-90% of gas extracted from the Marcellus Shale. This proposed line
would run through Hopewell Big Woods, a globally recognized tract of protected land, Warwick County Park, five excep-
tional value streams, many eased and historical properties, and close by Shenkel church, clear cutting everything in its
path for a 75-100 foot wide right of way.
I have assisted in organizing a group called the Pipeline Opposition Alliance. Our goal is to prevent this gas pipeline from
running through these many rural and preserved open spaces. Currently North Coventry, Warwick, East Nantmeal and
West Vincent supervisors have created township resolutions in opposition to the pipeline. We are also circulating a peti-
tion for citizens to stand against it.
For more information or to get involved, you can access our website at www.nopipelines.org or write to me at pro-
[email protected]. Thank you, Amy Shenk
Lev. 25:23-24: The land is mine and you are but aliens and my tenants. Throughout the country that you hold as a pos-
session, you must provide for the redemption of the land.

disaster relief and community development all
around the world. You can read more about
OGHS at [email protected]!
Please be as generous as you can. Thank you.
Shenkel is once again participating in the 30-Hour Fam-
ine with several other churches in the area. It will be
held March 15-16 at St. Paul’s in Amityville. Our com-
bined goal for all participating churches this year is
$5,000. Last year, we were able to raise $3,000, and we
are hoping to exceed that this year. $30 feeds one child
for a month, so our donations will feed over 166 chil-
dren for one month or 14 children for one year. If you
are interested in supporting this worthy cause, please
give your contributions to Ben or Sherri Mocarski by
March 10th.

and share old and new quilts. I can understand the
bonding of women in the 18th and 19th centuries. It's
such a lovely craft and it takes your mind away from all
the hassles of everyday life. We're always extending a
thimbled hand to anybody who would like to learn or
join us...just for curiosity's sake.

STEWARD’S CORNER
It is that time of year known as LENT. It begins on a day called ASH WEDNESDAY (That's a day after
that delicious donut day.) I came to the Ash Wednesday service that night out of curiosity. It was very in-
teresting.
The choir was there in their beautiful choir gowns...about a dozen members were there and they looked so
nice. They came into the church and proceeded to their choir area. Then I looked around for the congrega-
tion ....and was surprised to notice that not many people congregated this night. I guess the weather report
worried them too much. Anyway, I was there and so were about a dozen or so people.
Then something amazing happened! That group of people looked around the room and noticed that there were still lots of
front seats available! So they thought about it, and decided to bravely move to the first three or four pews on the right side
of the church so they would balance the area by being across from the choir.
How neat was that! I think Pastor Bonnie liked it a whole lot. It was nice to have all those happy faces smiling up at her.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if that happened every Sunday? (I mean sitting up front.) Try it, you’ll like it! I’ll stay out of the
way!
Seriously,
STEWARD
Healing prayers are now of-
fered on the third Sunday of
each month at both services.
The Prayer Chain list is continually
being updated. Request for prayers

thex, or get in touch with any member of the
Wholeness Committee. If anyone has a special
prayer request, please contact Ann Baccari or
Freda Wanner. Prayer requests will be carried for
one month. If anyone is interested in ministering
on the Prayer Chain, please contact Ann Baccari
or Freda Wanner. Members of the Wholeness
Committee are Ann Baccari, Ted Gray, Tootie
and Louise Hine, June Hartung, Carol Stubbe
and Freda Wanner.
The Questions of Jesus –
Lenten Sermon Series
“Have you understood all this?”
-Matthew 13:51
Our Lenten Sermon Series based on the Questions of Jesus continues through Easter:
Lent 3 (3/3) “What do you want me to do for you?”
Lent 4 (3/10) “Will you lay down your life for me?” (Rev. Liz Garrigan-Byerly, Guest Preacher)
Lent 5 (3/17) “Why do your call me „Lord, Lord,” but do not do what I tell you?”
Palm/Passion Sunday “Do you also wish to go away?”
Maundy Thursday “Could you not keep awake one hour?”
May our reflections on these questions guide us on our journey to the Great Answer!
It is hard to believe that we are already well into the Lenten Season! The Chancel Choir has been hard at work since Christ-mas learning some special pieces to share with you during Lent and Easter. On Easter Day, several of our young women will present a unique piece. Soon after Easter, we will find ourselves eagerly learning our Music Sun-day anthems.
This year's Music Sunday will be held on May 19th. In addi-tion to the Choir's offerings, we plan to present several in-strumental pieces, too. Mark your calendars for this musical day! It is a joy for all of us to be a part of the worship ser-vices here at Shenkel Church as together we praise our God and Savior! May you and your loved ones have a Blessed Easter!
Rev. Doug Holder
Dear Shenkel Faith Family,
For my confirmation project, I am collect-ing money to purchase a goat (goats) for Heifer International, whose mission is to work with communities to end hunger and poverty and care for the earth. "The gift of a dairy goat represents a lasting, meaningful way to help a little boy or girl on the other side of the world. Goats can thrive in extreme climates and on poor, dry land by eating grass and leaves. The gift of a dairy goat can supply a family with up to several quarts of nutritious milk a day - a ton of milk a year. Extra milk can be sold or used to make cheese, butter or yogurt. Families learn to use goat manure to fertilize gardens. Goats often have 2 or 3 kids a year making it easy for Heifer recipients to pass on the gift of a goat to another family in need. As a result those families who receive goats are helped to lift themselves out of poverty by starting small dairies that earn money for food, health care and education."
One goat costs: $120. My project began on Ash Wednesday. There is a "goat display" with a collection jar in the narthex of the church. My grandfather helped me design the "goat display." If you'd like to help me with this project, please place your donation (loose change, or dollar bills :) in the collection jar. I will have a chart keeping track of dona-tions so that you can see our progress of giving. I will also be inviting the children in the Sunday School to become in-volved in this mission project. Thanks so much for your support! I plan to collect money until Sunday, March 17th. I wonder how many "goat gifts" we can share? :) Thank you,
Michaela Craner
MORGAN SCHARNECK’S
CONFIRMTION PROJECT
My confirmation project is to assemble hygiene kits for Church World Service. Their website is

world. Below is a list of items I am collecting during the month of March:
Hand towels Wide-tooth combs Bar Soap Band-Aids
Wash cloths Nail clippers Toothbrushes
There will be a box in the narthex to place your donated items. Thank you for your support.

LOGAN’S COMFIRMATION PROJECT….. My confirmation project will be
collecting all types of foot wear for the Ian
Miller foundation called, “In Ian’s Boots”. Ian
was a member of Coventry Soccer as I am.
He died a few years ago and the doctors at
the hospital found a Bible verse in his boot.
It read, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers
whenever you face trials of many kinds, be-
cause you know that the testing of your faith
develops perseverance. Perseverance must
finish its work so that you may be mature
and complete, not lacking anything.” Every
year, my soccer team, along with Coventry
Soccer, participates in soccer tournaments
that raise money for the cause. When we
have been at these tournaments, they also
accept donations of boots, sneakers, cleats,
sandals, etc. I thought that It would be great
if we at Shenkel Church could also help. I
will place two bins in the narthex in the be-
ginning of January and check them regularly
to make sure they are not overflowing with
our donations. The project will end the last
Sunday in April. Please donate all your old
shoes and new one’s if you
wish. Please give freely.
Thank you,
Logan Baker

The drama continues as we recall Jesus’ painful march to Golgotha, his suffering and death on the cross, and the
darkness that hung over the earth.
Easter Vigil Immediately following the Good Friday Service, March 29, the vigil begins, and ends on Saturday
at noon on Saturday. This is a time of solitude and meditation. It is suggested that at least two peo-
ple be present for one hour all through the night. Materials will be provided on which to meditate,
or you may bring your own personal meditation to read. It is a time of quiet reflection. There is a
sign up chart in the Narthex for people wishing to participate in the Vigil. If you cannot do it at the
church, you can do it at home for the specified times. If you would like more information, contact
Ann Baccari or the Church office.
