PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Tena Koutou
The winter sports teams are now well under way. There are some great skills being finetuned and developed
during lunchtime and after school practices. I enjoy hearing about the successes of the students when they
play their games. Good luck to all our sports team for this weekend, play hard and play fair.
During the last couple of weeks, the student council have highlighted areas that makes Matahui School a
special place to learn and also how we could make things better. These very mature and thoughtful young
people have a great insight as they shared their thoughts and opinions. In our newsletter this week I have
shared with you a project I have been working with them on. It is a behaviour plan and a set of expectations
that is expected of a Matahui Student. The student council were able to articulate the process to their peers
after our meeting.
It is pink shirt day today and it is great to see so many students taking up the challenge of wearing a pink
shirt. My apologies for the short notice. Pink Shirt day to me, is celebrating individuality, every one of us is
different. Pink shirt day is also about respect and this is this weeks value. No one should be teased or
bullied for who they are. Love Harry’s ensemble….happy birthday Darcy.
Thank you to the families who have offered their support on the 26 May. Thank you also to those who have
made contact with me and shared you are unable to attend. We have 10 families who have offered their
support on the day. Our student council, if they are available will be making cups of tea and serving scones
and cake to keep our energy levels going.
A big thank you to Dave….he is currently working with our students during community singing helping
them with the pronunciation and rhythm of our school song. When the students are ready, I would love to
show our community their progress. I will keep you informed.

HEALTH AND SAFETY
SPOTLIGHT OF THE MONTH
Please be mindful of your vehicle speed when entering and exiting the school site. Dust from the school drive can be a nuisance, but less speed, less dust produced! Please also be aware that no child is to be unsupervised in the car park area. We appreciate your continued support regarding the above .

Dear Parents and caregivers
Matahui School is now using the skool loop app. The app can be
downloaded on to an android or iphone smartphone and is free. We have
been trialing the app for the last few weeks and can see that this would be
a great tool for communication with our parent community.
The school app will allow for instant viewing of school events, receiving
of notifications, easy advice of absences, access of school contact details
and instant accessing of information.
We envisage this app will greatly enhance our communication to the
whole school community and will work alongside other school
communication tools. You can currently download the app; our school
notices have been loaded into the app.
The app is funded totally free to the school by sponsorship of businesses
for a small annual fee of $275. Rather than having advertisements that do
not connect with our school community, I have stipulated with the
company that we offer advertising slots to our own community and have
advertising that is relevant. There is a limited amount of how many
businesses the company can feature. There is absolutely no pressure for
you to do so. Think of it as an opportunity, if they do not receive any
interest they will offer the spaces to other companies.
The school app will go live shortly, and we would very much appreciate
your decision as soon as you’re able. The company is offering ….all
artwork can be done complimentary for you.

Parents Corner: The Place to Find Hidden Gems
Welcome to wà Kahurangi: where Parents, and Carers can find positive inputs
from other adults in the school community.
This week, we'd like to say THANK YOU to our Matahui Sporting Heroes.
Every week, parents and caregivers take on the roles of coaching our many sports
teams. Hockey, swimming, soccer, cross country, netball, basketball...and many
more. All our parent-coaches are volunteers... juggling commitments around
other children, full time jobs, businesses, and many other roles in the wider
Western Bay community. So, thank you THANK YOU to each of the parents
who help coach, transport, cheer, support and encourage our children to play
sports. You uphold the Matahui 'brand' in the community and role model team-
work to our children.
Here's the GOOD NEWS about children playing sport. Research from around
the world indicates that playing team sport at primary level helps with;
1. Sleep (yes, really!) Exercise helps children fall asleep sooner (yippee) and
sleep more deeply. This is important because our children heal, grow, and prune
neurons (the brain's natural 'housework ' function) when they sleep. Good sleep is
crucial to wellbeing.
2. Improved Mood - exercise releases brain chemicals that act as natural healers
for our moods, helping our children feel happier and more relaxed.
3. Mental Function - the challenges, depth perception, co-ordination and team
play actually help lay down new neural connections in our children's brains. Yes,
team sports actually grow our children's brains!
117 Matahui Road, R.D.4, Katikati. 3181 Phone 07 552-0655
Email: [email protected] Website: www.matahui.school.nz
4. Reduces Stress - the distraction, physical movement and laughter involved in
playing sport with friends acts as a superb stress buffer. Exercise reduces the
levels of stress hormones in the body. In other words, playing sport together
helps our children 'blow out the cobwebs' and ready their brains for another day
of clear-headed learning.
5. Teach movement for life. Children who play sport earlier, tend to stay active
for longer as they become adults. This in turn helps prevent obesity and many
health complications such as diabetes later in life.
6. Sport teachers leadership skills, builds confidence, teaches challenge-seeking,
goal setting...
So, THANK YOU parents who coach... you are building our children's lives and
futures.
Positive thought for the week:
A smile starts on the lips, a grin spreads to the eyes, a chuckle comes from the
belly; but a good laugh bursts forth from the soul, overflows, and bubbles all
around. — Carolyn Birmingham
