The O Gallery - Western Art in Chengdu
For many years, art from China has been exported to art lovers all over the world, while very little art from the West has been available in China. O Gallery owner David Ochoa from Oregon wants to change that by giving art students and aficionados access to paintings from world-famous Western artists. Being well-connected in the international art scene, David shows paintings from Australia, Peru, Croatia, Korea and the United States. These paintings are bringing renewed excitement to the art scene in Chengdu. Variety is valued highly at the O Gallery, so the exhibited art works rotate completely within two to three months. This means art lovers will constantly be able to wet their appetites with new exhibits. The paintings are displayed in a relaxed setting, and promise a unique experience while visiting.
● Congratulations to the successful set-up of a liaison office of the
German Chamber of Commerce in Chengdu in December. The
Chamber is headed by Mr. Oliver Hickfang, who supports German
companies entering the local market by providing practical knowledge
and advice.
● Chengdu scored well in a recent listing of “Top 50 Chinese Cities of
Comprehensive Creative Capacity” conducted by Peking University
and the Chinese newspaper “Science and Technology Daily”. In
criteria like “Best Innovative Environment” and “Best Innovative
Performance” Chengdu is even listed amongst the first 15.
● The completion of a recovery plan for the Sichuan earthquake areas
has been announced by the municipality of Chengdu. The 3-year-
project covers Dujiangyan, Pengzhou, Chongzhou and Dayi, all
severely devastated by the earthquake in May 2008, and requires
almost 260 billion RMB.
● Chengdu’s expat community supports the earthquake rebuilding
their own way: The Panda Hash House Harriers will organize their
“Red Dress Charity Run” on February 15 to support the local charity
“Sichuan Earthquake Relief (SQR)”. More information is available at

CHINESE SPRING FESTIVAL
Spring Festival is the most important festival for Chinese people and is when all family members get together, just like Christmas in the West.
It falls on the 1st day of the 1st lunar month. It is a national carnival to welcome the spring after a long and gloomy winter, and to celebrate last year's harvest with good food, dragon dancing and firecrackers.
There are many customs accompanying the Spring Festival. On the 8th day of the 12th lunar month, many families make Laba porridge, a kind of porridge made with glutinous rice, jujube berries, lotus seeds and beans. People also attach great importance to Spring Festival Eve. The meal for the eve is more luxurious than usual. Dishes such as chicken, fish and bean curd cannot be excluded, because in Chinese, their pronunciations, respectively “ji”, “yu” and “doufu”, mean auspiciousness, abundance and richness.
Year 2009 is the Year of the Ox. Ox is one of the 12-year-cycle animals in the Chinese lunar calendar. It symbolizes prosperity through fortitude and hard work. It is called “niu” in Chinese and sounds similar to the English word "new".
