http://www.bealiba.ponyclubvic.org.au The first member of the month of May is being awarded to In- grid Gould. I was very impressed when I found out that Ingrid was the first person to come across Han- na’s horse Rad when he was unwell. Ingrid noticed that the horse was ill by the symptoms that he demonstrated and quickly in- formed Julie of what she had seen. Unfortunately Rad was a very sick horse and did not make a recovery. Ingrid is only 10 years old and her knowledge of the families’ horses’ daily behaviour and information that she has gained while attending pony club and completing her D & D* Certifi- cates have enabled her to recognise that something was terribly wrong. These instincts are wonderful things to have, I am sure that throughout your lifetime you will save animals by noticing when things are not right. Well Done A new member to our club who tends to stand out and is being awarded Member of the Month is Josh Baumgartner. When I first met Josh he wasn’t particu- larly interested in riding horses and it appeared that he had a “wild side”. His parents joined him up as a member, purchased him a wonderful pony and he attended rallies, camps and jumping lessons with Allan and before long we had a very tal- ented young, gutsy rider in our club. Josh enjoys pony club games and rode extremely well at the Zone State Qualifying Event in a Composite team. His skills, commitment and natural ability have enabled him to be chosen as the 7th rider for the Bealiba A Games team which will com- pete at the State Championships, not a bad effort for an 8 year old. The Importance of “Horse Boots” Horse boots are used to protect the horse's legs while being ridden or travelling. Many equestrian activities place heavy demands on the muscles and tendons in the horse's legs so boots are used to give extra support. Boots can also be used to correct problems such as over reaching, cutting and brushing. There is a wide range of boots available to equestrians and it is important that you choose the correct boot for the activity you are do-ing or for the problem you have. Brushing Boots Brushing is when one leg 'brushes' against the inside of the other leg. Unprotected brushing can cause bruising to the bone and cuts and abrasions from the horseshoe. Brushing Boots have strong 'strike pads' to absorb the shock, theses boots protect the legs from injury. Boots such as the NEW brushing boot 'Airflow' allow constant airflow across the leg ensuring that the leg stays cool yet well protected Tendon boots Tendon protection is especially important during high energy activities like show jumping, for ex-ample when the hind foot can extend forward and strike the tendon on the front leg. Tendon boots, as the name suggests, protect the horse's tendons with a thick pad sewn into the boot which can both correct over reaching and support weak tendons. They are also used in wet, muddy or extreme conditions when extra support is needed to protect the leg from injury. The NEW 'Moulded' Open Tendon Boot has a stylish tough and technical outer shell and two Velcro straps to ensure a quick and secure fastening. Over reach boots (Bell Boots) Overreaching is when the toe of the hind hoof strikes the back of the front foot. This can cause severe bruises, cuts and abrasions around the delicate heel area. Some horses are prone to 'over reaching'. The over reach boot prevents this by forming a protec-tive shell over the front hooves. Over reach boots are often made from rubber which easily be-comes worn and can flip up so boots such as the NEW over reach boot made from ballistic nylon are more preferable. With double fastening and close fitting to prevent tripping, this tough little boot is ideal for all riding activities. Fetlock boots The fetlock joint can be subject to a range of injuries especially during high energy activities like show jumping. Fetlock boots are designed to protect the horse's hind leg against knocks, abrasions and brushing. The NEW 'moulded' fetlock boot offers maximum protection while still giving ventilation through its perforated neoprene lining. Cross Country Boots During high energy activities like cross country, tendon and cannon bone protection are very im-portant as the hind foot can extend far forward and strike the front leg on the tendon or the can-non bone of the hind leg can strike an obstacle. These boots offer all round protection which is necessary for hard impact and demanding equestri-an sports such as cross country. these boots support the cannon bone, tendon and fetlock as well as giving protection from brushing. The groundbreaking design of the NEW X-Country 'Airflow' Boot allows large volumes of air to circulate in a constant flow ensuring the leg remains cool and well ventilated. Travel/Float boots Travel boots offer protection from the knocks and bumps that can occur in the horsefloat or truck. Some boots offer extra protection to the hock and corenet band. Special care has to be taken during transport when horses run the risk of injury by losing bal-ance and thereby bruising or rubbing the legs or slipping off the truck ramp. Tail guards are designed to protect the tailbone as well as tail hair from damage. Knee boots During road work or whilst travelling horses can trip and fall onto hard surfaces like asphalt. Knee boots are designed to protect the delicate knee joint against injuries from those kind of accidents.
