Dear Brothers and Sisters, Members and Friends of the Hill United Presbyterian Church:

Rev. Stan Ott of Vital Churches Ministries says that “Before we can do the work of God’s People we must first be the People of God.”. The point is how do we think, act, and live in a spiritual manner as we follow our Lord Jesus. In other words, how does God guide us? I share with you quickly six suggestions: 1. Love motivates God’s guidance: God loves us as His sons and daughters through our Lord Jesus so we can confidently expect God to guide and provide on a daily basis. 2. Commitment precedes God’s direction: All the way down the line it is important to say “I have a commitment to God in our Lord Jesus Christ.” 3. Concentration clarifies issues: The thinking is done prayerfully! 4. Scripture explains absolutes and variables: Psalm 119: 105 says, “Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” 5. The Holy Spirit directs desires: If we are in this relationship with God through our Lord Jesus, then the Holy Spirit is the inner witness in our hearts, helping us greatly. 6. Faith is the key to guidance: Proverbs 3: 5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart...In your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”

Yours for being spiritually guided in our Lord Jesus Christ, Pastor Clark

Rev. Clark Sawyer

GHANA MISSION TASK FORCE REPORT

A recent article received from Josh Heikkila, the West Africa liaison of the PC(USA) included a

social progress study conducted among several countries of similar GDP and population as Ghana.

The study featured three areas: basic human needs, foundations of well being, and opportunities.

The study further broke these three areas into 12 aspects of the country such as nutrition, shelter,

water and sanitation, personal rights, access to information and communication, tolerance, and

access to advanced education. By studying these 12 aspects, it is hoped that these countries can

work to improve and advance social progress. The primary weakness in Ghana is access to advanced education. What you

are doing by supporting the Ghana scholarship project addresses this primary weakness within Ghana. Wow. The Lord

works in mysterious ways and we should give thanks for His presence and love in our lives. To see more details of this

massive study, including viewing results for the United States, logon to: http://www.socialprogressimperative.org/data/spi/countries/GHA

One of the recent scholarship beneficiaries sent the following letter dated March 20, 2014 to our church. She is affiliated

with the Bubiashie congregation.

Dear Brethren,

I am writing to express my thanks and profound gratitude for your kind gesture in awarding me the financial aid to enable

me to undertake diploma studies at the E. P. College of Education in Amedzofe, Ghana.

I am especially touched, knowing that in deciding to sponsor me you must have sacrificed some personal use of the money.

It is therefore my prayer that the good Lord would bless and reward you all for your thoughtfulness and kindness.

I, on my part, promise to work hard at my studies to justify the confidence reposed in me, taking advantage of this

opportunity to better myself and to hopefully contribute similarly one day to the education of other less privileged in the

community.

Wishing you all very well, with God’s eternal blessings. Thank you.

Yours faithfully,

Agnes Adzam

Please keep the Bubiashie District churches, Bernard Daddy, chairperson of the Bubiashie Scholarship Committee, as well

as the students in your prayers.

We want to express our thanks to everyone who donated baked goods or monetary contributions for “Meals on Wheels”. We appreciate your generosity and support for this very worthy project. Many dozen cookies, cupcakes, muffins, quick breads, angel foods, gingerbreads and others were much appreciated by the ladies working at “Meals on Wheels”. Monetary contributions will be sent when we have a complete total which is over $400. Again, we thank you.

PER CAPITA Per Capita (about that blue envelope in your box of weekly offering envelopes). In case you are wondering what the blue envelope near the beginning of your 2014 offering envelope box is for, you are not the only one. “Per Capita” is the assessment each congregation pays for each church member recorded on their membership rolls. It is assessed by our denomination (Presbyterian Church, U.S.A.) to cover the required administrative expenses to operate the Presbytery, Synod and General Assembly offices of each judicatory. These expenses are $34.22 per member for 2014. Since the Per Capita is included in calculating our operating budget, not everyone contributes extra to this source. Others prefer to do so in order to help ease a little of the financial burden that this places upon the church budget. A little extra giving does make a difference when our congregation’s total Per Capita assessment is $12,114.00. Even if you are not led to give the entire $34.22, any amount toward the Per Capita would be appreciated. Thank you to those who choose to help. As of 4/11/14, we have received $3,605.14 toward the $12,114.00 total Per Capita. Blessings In Christ, The Stewardship and Mission Support Committee

PENTECOST OFFERING

The Pentecost Offering will be

received the last two weekends

of May and the first two

weekends of June culminating with the celebration

of Pentecost on June 8, 2014.

The offering is for four areas of ministry:

40% of the offering is kept by our local Church for

use on behalf of children at risk.

10% of the offering will support General Assembly

Child Advocacy ministries.

25% of the offering supports General Assembly

ministries with youth.

25% supports young adult volunteer opportunities to

serve Jesus Christ in the United States and overseas.

As God leads you, please consider giving to the

Pentecost offering. Our goal for this year is

$800.00.

NOMINATING COMMITTEE

This is the time of the year when the Nominating Committee solicits your help in nominating people for Church Officers as Elders, Deacons, and Nominating Committee members. If you have someone in mind, please list their name on the Nomination Insert included with your Church bulletin in April, and return it to the Church office.

GRADUATION RECOGNITION

As we move toward the time of Graduation Ceremonies, if there is a member of your family graduating from High School, College, Post-Graduate Studies, Vocational-Technical or any other program, please tell the Church Office the name of the person and from where they are graduating. Please have this information to us by May 15, 2014. Graduation recognition for high school students will take place in early June, 2014.

6

LAYETTE SUNDAYS will be May 4th and 11th this year. Clothing for babies 2 years and younger can be placed in the bassinet in the church annex. Slightly used layette items in good condition are also accept-able. Monetary gifts are also appreciated. Thank you for your help with this project now and in past years.

A Night to Remember

On April 4, twenty members and friends of Betsy McCormick Circle traveled to Zelienople for an

evening of food, fellowship, and entertainment. We began by having dinner at the very busy Log

Cabin Inn, where we enjoyed wonderful meals and prompt service. No small feat for the size of our

party!

Then we continued on to the Strand Theater in Zelie. The Strand is now 100 years old and has been

reshaped from a movie theater into an intimate space for live performances as well as film. The

production we saw was called Bible on Broadway; it was a musical revue from some great shows

that you would probably recognize, such as Children of Eden, Joseph, Godspell, and Jesus Christ

Superstar.

The cast comprised fifteen talented children, whose ages appeared to range from about 7 to 14, and

four adults. This small group of performers sang 31 songs that were broken into two acts - the first

telling Old Testament stories, and the second dealing with the life, death, and resurrection of

Jesus. The voices blended beautifully, and the cast used props that both set the scenes and moved

the plots.

Yet two of the more memorable moments were nonverbal. In one, the children came on stage and

struck the pose of the da Vinci painting of The Last Supper. In the other, both adults and children,

singly or in pairs, came onto the stage and gazed upward in horror, anguish, and bewilderment as

they tried to comprehend the sight of Christ on the cross. The last number celebrated the hope we

know as Christians through Jesus' resurrection.

This was a night that we will not soon forget both for the joy of our fellowship and the power of the

message we felt through the performance. If you are a Presbyterian woman, and not yet a circle

member, we invite you to join us and become part of our journey of faith.
