It has been an exciting spring in StillWaters. Real estate sales have been very strong, new homes are being constructed, and everyone that comes by the SWRA office seems positive and upbeat. Most of the time everyone in StillWaters is positive and upbeat but lately a little more than normal. Maybe it is just the spring season when everything is renewed and full of life.

The Lake Martin area received some great news this past month when Alabama Power announced that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) had agreed to allow the winter water level in Lake Martin to be increased by three feet and to extend the summer water level into the fall months, when there is ample water in the Tallapoosa river watershed. This decision by FERC will have a huge economic impact on the Lake Martin area and StillWaters. Thank you to all the volunteers, organizations, and of course Alabama Power who worked hard to make sure FERC understood the positive economic impact an increased Lake Martin water level will have on our community.

It may seem a little early to be talking about the 4th of July but the StillWaters Residential Association Board of Directors is sponsoring a 4th of July family festival at Moonbrook Park on Saturday, July 4th. The StillWaters Neighborhood Council will be helping with the festival and if you would like to volunteer to help please contact the SWRA office at 256-825-2990. Currently there are plans for a band, activities for the children, and food vendors. The festival will end by 6pm so that families can enjoy the fireworks around the lake. This will be a great place to take small children and grandchildren to have a fun filled day. Mark your calendar to come by and bring the family.

Please help keep StillWaters beautiful by making sure all trash is placed in a proper receptacle and do not through trash out of a car window. I appreciate the conscientious property owners who pick up trash as they walk in our community. It helps the association reduce costs when property owners help keep our roads clean.

The roads committee has met and discussed with our engineer what areas of StillWaters roads needs repair, paving, and patching while staying within the 2015 budget. The engineer is currently finalizing the scope of work to be sent out to paving companies for bids. With 23 miles of roads and a limited budget, the roads committee works very hard to make sure our roads are maintained at an acceptable level. We have some of the best maintained roads around Lake Martin and it is because of the hard work of the roads committee volunteers. Current plans are to start on the 2015 road project by the end of May.

Most area schools end their school year during the month of May and this means more children are looking for something to do with their spare time. StillWaters is a great place to help use up that youthful energy; take a child golfing at StillWaters Golf Club and teach them a sport they can enjoy for years, at Harbor Pointe Marina you can get all your child’s water sports gear to use on the lake. FOUR EASY DIY PROJECTS TO UPDATE YOUR HOME

Whether you are looking to sell your home or just improve the looks of your home, here are four do it yourself projects that are low cost and easy enough for almost everyone to complete. Increasing the value of your home and giving it more curb appeal does not have to break the bank.

1. Paint your front door-Simply repainting your front door can instantly increase the curb appeal of your home. Go with a different color to really make it stand out. You can always repaint if you don’t like the color.

2. Replace cabinet hardware-Replacing your old hardware in the kitchen and bathrooms can significantly improve the appearance of the room. Check your local hardware store or online overstock companies for a great deal.

3. Add simple landscaping-Low priced, simple landscape improvements will improve the appeal of any home. Try adding window boxes or hanging baskets full of fresh flowers to the front of your home. Low maintenance potted plants at the front door will freshen up the entrance.

4. Paint old linoleum flooring- If you have an old linoleum patterned floor that has seen its better days and splurging on a new floor in not in the budget, try painting it. You can paint linoleum. Use a solid color, a fun stripe, or a modern checker board pattern. Most home improvement stores or paint supply stores can assist you with purchasing the correct paint for covering linoleum.

Remember any changes to the exterior of your property require approval by the Architectural Review Committee before starting on your project. Contact the SWRA office at 256-825-2990 or visit our website www.stillwatersra.com to obtain a permit request form for the ARC.

Heading Off Job Burnout

Burnout is more than just stress-it is how your mind and your body tell you a change is needed. Do you find yourself withdrawing from work and caring less about results? Are you working harder, often mechanically or to the point of exhaustion? Just going through the motions at work but not accomplishing task? Try these few tips for keeping burnout at bay.

Exercise at least three times a week. Running, walking, bike r iding, or anything that gets your heart and lungs working burns off stress. Exercise releases endorphins that boost your mood and it dissipates built-up stress that otherwise leads to burnout.

Make time for a hobby. An ar t class, cooking, reading, boating on Lake Mar tin pretty much anything that is not part of your daily regular grind. It can help you relax and will balance out things that wear you down.

Practice breathing exercise. “Just breathe” Yes it is an old cliché, but there is a grain of truth behind every cliché. Deep breathing gives your body a boost of oxygen and it releases tension in your abdomen around your heart.

Get away from work. Take a walk at lunch, don’t take work home, and never eat lunch at your desk to keep working. Just getting away from work for 15 minutes of relaxation can relieve stress.

Laugh. Sometimes it helps to look at a tough situation and just laugh. It that fails, read the jokes your friend keeps emailing you three times a week or pick a comedy next time you surf the TV channels.

Take up yoga or Tai Chi. These disciplines have a restorative effect on the body and are sure burnout busters.

Burnout can creep up on you slowly. Watch for warning signs and stay ahead of burnout. Your heart, family, and employer will thank you.

UPDATE ON THE STILLWATER'S GOLF/RESTAURANT PROPERTY PURCHASE

FROM KEITH AND DEBBIE HIETT

It's been a few weeks since the news became public about our purchase of SW Golf Courses and Club House. Over the last 3 weeks things seemed to change every day with details concerning this project. The purchase process of StillWaters Golf Courses and Club House is very complicated and will take much more time than we had expected.

Timing is crucial in regards to the golf course improvements that we need to make. If we move in and begin improvements in July, it's too late to make the serious changes that need to be made on the course before the end of the growing season. The perfect time for closing would be December or January. Waiting that long is NOT what we wanted to do. We have about another month to begin fertilizing and spraying herbicides to make a real difference this growing season.

The last two weeks we began working on a contract to enter into a lease/purchase agreement. This could get us in the door within the next 3 to 4 weeks. I feel like the support level of this project would be extremely high if the members could actually begin enjoying this facility immediately. Keep your fingers crossed. This is a great way to gauge the support before we go to closing.

Nothing will change that was previously discussed. We will be moving forward exactly like we would if we had purchased and closed on the property. We will have several months to know how many people will support this, and that will determine if we can actually go to closing. So for now, first things first. Let's get the lease/purchase signed. When this happens, we will begin the process of improving the existing course, finalizing plans for a restaurant, fitness center, and other amenities that we all would love to see in StillWaters.

This lease/purchase is much riskier for us. We will be investing a large sum of capital in this project without knowing what level of support we will receive. We believe in this project, but we can't do this alone. WE MUST HAVE SUPPORT FROM RESIDENTS AND LOCALS!! SPREAD THE WORD!!! Look for an update within the next 10 days. Thank you all for your patience.

Please contact us at [email protected] if you have any questions, ideas, or just want to show your support. We look forward to hearing from you. Paid Advertisement

Happy Mothers’ Day

Mother's Day in the United States is annually held on the second Sunday of May. It celebrates motherhood and it is a time to appreciate mothers and mother figures. Many people give gifts, cards, flowers, candy, a meal in a restaurant or other treats to their mother and mother figures, including grandmothers, great-grandmothers, stepmothers, and foster mothers.

The best gift a child (no matter what your age you are still your mother’s child) can give their mother or mother figure is to make sure they visit them in person or talk with them in person on Mother’s Day. No gift can replace time spent with a child. Spend time with your mother or mother figure on Sunday, May 10th.

THANK YOU VETERANS!

A special Thank You from all of us to all men and women who are currently serving or who have served in our Armed Forces. We have many property owners from all branches of the Armed Forces in StillWaters. Thank You for your unselfish commitment and service in protecting our country and its freedoms.

Still Waters Volunteer Fire & Rescue

This is the next information article from your SWVF&R Annual Meeting.

As required by law your fire department is to have a financial review each year. This was not done in the past, however one was done for the first time last year.

In October, 2012, five boxes of financial records were reported missing from Station 1 and a report was filed by George Brady and Terry Gantt with the Tallapoosa County Sheriff's office. These records have not been located to date.

A fuel usage review was done and the following was found:

1. Gallons of gasoline purchased during 2010 and 2011 were over 550 gallons above the years 2006 through 2009.

2. During a review of receipts, invoices and other supporting documentation of fuel related expenses and inquiries of the company's accountant, it was noted that detailed receipts stopped being sent to the accountant’s office in the same time frame of the years with unusual trends.

3. 2012 and 2013 was well below the average of 2006 through 2009. 4. The department had two vehicles that ran on unleaded fuel and six that ran on diesel. During 2009 through

2011 regular gas was 42% of the total fuel purchases. The two gas powered vehicles were rarely used. In the years 2012 and 2013 gas purchases were reduced to 20%.

5. In 2012, George Brady was elected President and immediately implemented procedures and processes for fuel expenses. These included, reducing Chevron Credit Cards from six to two, one in the ambulance and one in the safe, also a purchase form was required for fuel purchases which requires vehicle number, fuel type, gallons, cost and an attached receipt.

Additional information on the financial review will be in our next News Letter.

Thanks to all of the Volunteers, Paramedics, EMT's and our sixty plus members of the Auxiliary for helping to make your Fire Department the best it can be.

How to Donate Used Items Efficiently

This is the time of year for spring cleaning and for many homeowners that could mean out with the “old” and in with the “new”. What do you do with the “old” when it is still usable and not quite ready for the landfill? Donating used items to charitable organizations is a great option. The following tips give you a guideline for determining what can you donate, where can you donate, and how can you get it there.

1. Many items are eligible for donation. You might be surprised to learn exactly what items you can donate. In addition to clothing, furniture, cars, cell phones, fitness equipment, electronics, and even art supplies are widely accepted by donation centers and other charitable organizations. Almost anything can be donated, even food to the local food bank.

2. Consider what shape your items are in to determine if they are something that can be donated. Most organizations and donation centers accept gently used items in working condition. They resell the items to make money for the charities they represent. Broken or un-usable items only cost donation centers money to dispose of the item.

3. After choosing where to donate, decide how you will get the items to the organization. Often, large organizations and donation centers will pick up large items such as appliances, a car, or furniture. Bringing a donation to the organization saves them money and helps them provide more resources to their charities.

4. Make sure to get a donation receipt for tax purposes. Before donating, make a detailed list of the items you are donating along with estimated values. You will need the values to help determine your tax benefit for donating.

5. If there is not a donation center close by, check with a local church. Many churches take in used items to redistribute to people in need.

Donating usable items not only helps provide those in need, it also helps protect our environment. Remember don’t just throw it away donate it.
