YEAR 10 CHINA EXCHANGE TRIP UPDATE According to reports from Ms Liz Rankin, our Year 10 students are enjoying their visit to China. They were excited to see their friends again. In addition to their commitments with the host school, they have also spent time touring Dali. Some of the experiences have included seeing an opera performance, exploring the university and taking a cable car up to the top of a local mountain. Today they were treated to an Official Welcoming Ceremony at the school, where they were greeted as very honoured guests. All students and accompanying staff will be returning to Australia during the school holidays, on Friday 25th September. STUDENT OF THE MONTH ASSEMBLY Our Primary and Secondary Student of the Month Assemblies were held on Tuesday this week. It was pleasing to see such a large number of students being nominated to receive an award. 7D Gideon Sands END OF DAY ROUTINES – PICKING UP YOUR CHILD As parents would understand, schools are required to ensure that we comply with privacy laws and respect the privacy of all students. I would like to remind parents who may be picking up children at the end of the day, to please wait outside the buildings until the dismissal bell rings. Seating is available under the shade sails and trees for parents who may be a few minutes early. If parents need to collect their child at an earlier time, please contact the School Office, so that necessary sign-out procedures can be arranged. END OF TERM I would like to take this opportunity to thank students and staff for the support and commitment they have provided throughout a very busy term. Their efforts have ensured that the many significant activities conducted by the school during Term 3 have been very productive and rewarding experiences. I wish students, families and staff a safe and relaxing break.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Mr Graeme Cupper

Page 3: NEWSLETTER - Merbein P-10 CollegeVariety Night – Let Me Entertain You 28-30th Grade 3-4 Camp th Thursday ... Thank you all of the students who helped to set up and run the activities

STRANGER DANGER A reminder to parents that their children should be taught about not getting into cars or accepting treats from people they don’t know. Recently, at another Primary School in our district, a young child was approached by a stranger. This child reported the incident to the teacher on duty which is the protocol we would like to reinforce in the Merbein P-10 College school community. FOOTY COLOURS DAY TOMORROW Our school has designated tomorrow, Friday 18th September as Footy Colours Day. Students are encouraged to wear their team colours on the day. If students come ‘Out Of Uniform’ in their Footy team’s colours, they will be expected to make a gold coin donation to support the Student Representative Council (SRC) projects and charities. The Canteen is providing a special Footy Menu tomorrow. Students have already ordered for this, so if orders have not been made then students will not be able to access this special menu tomorrow.

EARLY DISMISSAL TOMORROW On the last day of term, Friday 18th September, students will be dismissed at the earlier time of 2.30pm. Lunch will commence at 1.30pm and student activities will be run during lunchtime. Normal classes will be run all morning. Secondary Students will be required to check and clean their lockers before the end of term. Form teachers will be supervising this process in the last 10 minutes of the day on Friday. All buses will be running an hour earlier than regular times tomorrow. Busses may arrive at the school out of their regular order, so students must be aware of this when catching the bus at the earlier time tomorrow.

WALK TO SCHOOL MONTH OCTOBER October is Walk to School Month. Victorian Primary School students are encouraged to walk, ride or scoot to and from school to highlight ways children can improve their health and wellbeing. 60 minutes of physical activity is recommended for children each day. Walking to school can also help reduce traffic congestion, parking difficulties and associated environmental impacts. So rest up through the holidays and be ready with your walking boots for Day 1 of next term. Get involved and get active.

Merbein P10 College supports this

program. Participating students will

receive certificates.

MILDURA REGIONAL CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS The Championships will be hold on Wednesday 14th October (Week 2, Term 4), and is open to Year 5/6 Primary students and Year 7/9/10 Secondary students. Please Note: Year 8's have a Drug Forum to attend on the same day. Cost is $10 per student. To be held at Sacred Heart, Mildura. This is an ‘All Day’ Competition, with all participating students playing seven games across the day. Please see Mrs Fetherston if you would like to compete. Practices will be held each lunchtime in the Yellow Building on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. Permission notes will be issued next term. THANKS FOR ASKING R U OK? REPORT - Kyra Fetherston Last Thursday we had a lunchtime filled with positive vibes, it was a day where people smiled at each other and asked the important question R U OK? A mix of students from both Primary and Secondary came together to play giant chess and giant connect 4, to be face-painted with fun yellow designs, and to wear yellow ribbons in their hair or around the wrist. The UNO players brought their games outside and we borrowed some of the old school games such as marbles, elastics and pick up sticks from the Green building. Mitch Rodd from Headspace set up a display to promote their role in helping to support young people. They offer a range of free or low cost services, including advice, information and early intervention services for mental and physical health concerns, use of alcohol and other substances, risk of homelessness, and vocational and education support. Located at 2/125 Pine Ave, Mildura in the old Cottee building, they can be contacted by phone on 50212400 or by email on [email protected]. Thank you all of the students who helped to set up and run the activities. A massive thanks to Bev Thomson for having the vision of what they day should look like.

BICYCLE THEFT, DON’T BECOME A VICTIM. LET’S DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! Here are the facts. 63 Bicycles stolen in the Mildura

area over the last 12 months. Ranging in value from $25 to $4,750. Less than half were ever recovered. Mainly stolen from residential yards and

community locations. No specific make or type being stolen. What can we do as a community? Secure your bicycle by locking it when leaving it

in a public place. At home, place your bicycle in a locked shed or

at least out of site. Engrave your bicycle with your Drivers Licence

number or that of your parents. (Engrave the underside of the frame) Police have engravers to assist the marking of your bicycle.

Take a photo of your bicycle. Including serial number. If stole, photo can be shown to police.

Police will be speaking to cyclists. They will be checking on ownership and safety requirements such as helmets and roadworthiness of bicycles. Police are asking for community members to report all suspicious activities. Police will be working with local schools in holding marking days, for students to bring their bikes to school and have them engraved. Contact Mildura Police on 03 50185300

PRIMARY NEWS

OVERDUE LIBRARY BOOKS Please check that your child does not have an overdue book before the holidays. Please have them return books to school tomorrow so they can then re-borrow the books or borrow another book to read in the holidays. SCHOOL BOOKS Please have all Merbein P-10 College books returned before the holidays, both Take Home and Library Books. Students may borrow books to read over the holidays but they will need to return all books first. GREEN NEWS To date, we have shared three quarters of the school year with your child and it is wonderful to see what massive improvements have been made. We greatly appreciate the family support. We especially appreciate the effort you make to listen to your child read every night at home. It really does make a difference. We have had an extremely busy and rewarding term, finishing off with an Inquiry Excursion to Wentworth yesterday which was very successful and enjoyable. Tomorrow is Footy Day, so please remember to send a gold coin donation. Enjoy a well-deserved rest for the next two weeks! NO HAT NO PLAY POLICY The ‘No Hat - No Play’ policy will be implemented from Day 1 of Term 4. Please make ensure your child comes to school with an approved hat (ie. NO Baseball Caps) and a pop-top bottle of water for the classroom. VARIETY NIGHT – COSTUMES FOR STUDENTS IN THE GREEN BUILDING Bugs End of the Green Building Students will need a bright coloured t-shirt and black shorts for their item in our college Variety Night. These can be bought cheaply from discount stores over the holidays in readiness for the Variety Night. Beetles End of the Green Building (Grades 2-3) The students will be performing to the theme ‘Celebrating Kid's Television Shows Over the Decades’. Those performing ‘Bill and Ben’ will need - black pants, brown or red t-shirt and gardening gloves. Those performing ‘Play School’ will need - black pants and bright t-shirt. Those performing ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ will need - Ninja Turtle costume or green pants and t-shirt. Those performing ‘Round the Twist’ will need - Jeans and tie dyed t-shirt. Those performing ‘Wiggles’ will need - Black pants and t-shirt (red, blue, yellow or purple).

NEW CANTEEN MENU FOR THE GREEN BUILDING – 3RD TERM The School Canteen is excited about introducing the new Spring/Summer Menu which will start on the first day of Term 3. It has lots of new healthy choices and two categories, Everyday Items and Occasional Items. Everyday Items are those that can be chosen and eaten every day of the week. Occasional Items are those that should be chosen wisely as there is less nutritional value in these items. We recommend that you try to restrict these Occasional Items to once or twice a week. The new menu for Term 3 is attached to today’s newsletter. CANTEEN MENU FOR THE ORANGE BUILDING Next term the Grade 4/5/6 students will be able to order off the Senior Menu as we have found that some children are now looking for a bigger item. INQUIRY EXCURSION TO WENTWORTH REPORT The students in the Bugs End of the Green Building, spent an interesting day at Wentworth yesterday, an Inquiry Unit Trip following the theme ‘Then and Now’. They visited the park that houses the Paddle Steamer ‘Ruby’, the Museum, the Old Gaol and the River Junction in Wentworth. The students were fascinated with the many items in the museum that we no longer used and how they have changed over time. The facility is a great snapshot to earlier times. We even saw a short video on the 1956 Flood and the famous Grey Fergie Tractor. WENTWORTH TRIP STUDENT REPORTS I had fun at Wentworth Gaol and at the museum. I dressed up as a prisoner. I watched a movie of the Murray River flooding. We went to the park. We saw a grey tractor. By Jesse – Prep Yesterday we saw some dummies dress up at the gaol and a big fish at the museum. By Sarnie - Prep Yesterday we went on an excursion to Wentworth. First we went to the park for snack. Then, we went to the Museum and Gaol. Finally we went to the Junction. We had an icy-pole. My favourite part was the Gaol. By Olivia – Year 1. VISIT TO WENTWORTH PHOTOS

SECONDARY NEWS SECONDARY PARENT/STUDENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS On Wednesday, 7th October, the first Wednesday in Term 4, the Secondary Staff will be making themselves available for interviews to discuss the progress of students from 4-7pm. Parents are strongly recommended to attend so they can collect their child’s Interim Progress Report and talk with their child’s teachers about their progress and recommendations for improvement in their learning. There are no booking times, but parents should allow sufficient time as the interviews will conclude at 6.55pm to allow teachers to leave by 7pm. Each interview is allocated a maximum of five minutes per teacher. If a longer time is required please make arrangements to meet at another time. Additionally to this, if parents are unable to attend the interviews or were not able to access a teacher on the evening, please contact the school and we will ensure an alternate arrangement can be made for these important discussions. WORK EXPERIENCE STUDENT REPORT by Claudia Tatchell On 24th August, 2015, our Year 10 students leaped into two weeks of work experience. These weeks were enjoyed by many and showed others what career path they didn’t want to take. Many different students experienced many different fields of work, such as Mechanics, Journalism, Early Child Care, Teaching, Law and Aged Care. I did my first week of Work Experience at the Seasons Restaurant which taught me a lot about all of the factors that contribute to running a restaurant. My second week was at Sunraysia Daily for editorial experience. I really enjoyed it and would consider working in a similar field in my life. Working with four year olds for a week at Mildura West Kinder was fun and challenging. My days consisted of helping children with all of their tasks. I learnt a lot about working with children during my week and would consider Early Child Care as an occupation. Primary students on the other hand are a different story. My second week at Mildura West Primary was definitely more challenging. Overall, the Work Experience Program was a great success and a learning experience for all of the Year 10 students. On behalf of the Year 10’s, I would like to thank all of the companies that welcomed us into the workforce and provided us with a great experience. I would also like to thank Willow for motivating us to organise our placements. Thankyou also to Mr Hankinson and Mr Rhodes for coming into check up on us during the weeks.

HOCKEY REPORT – Ms Donnelly Junior Boys game results were 2 draws and a loss to finish second. Junior Girls were unlucky not to get a goal in their games. Intermediate Boys were so close to winning it all. Intermediate Girls were winner, winner, winners, and will now progress to the next stage. Congratulations!
