Last Thursday Year 7 travelled over to Wales to attack Chepstow Castle. The trip was a culmination of the castles study they have been doing this year.Pupils were taken around the castle with knowledgeable guides learning how the castle developed from the time of the reign of William I under William Fitz Osbern until it was ruined by Parliamentarian cannons during the Civil War.Pupils were treated to a display of superb longbowmanship from Kevin Hicks of the History Squad. He then regaled them with the tale of the surgery that Prince Henry (later Henry V) underwent to remove a piece of arrow that had been deeplyembedded in his cheek.Blessed with good weather and enthusiastic staff, the pupils certainly learnt a lot anddeveloped a real sense of what life may have been like in the Middle Ages. They followed up the day with an evening’s prep

on an analysis of the defensive capabilities of the castle and how best to attack it. A debt of gratitude is owed to all the staff who gave up their valuable time to make the trip so memorable.Mr Close

Last week the school hosted its annual International Evening. This piece by Alex Chung, tells us all about the event.Lots of my friends have been saying ‘Oh I wish I had gone’ or ‘I wanted to be there’. So, do you know where they wanted to be? The International Evening, of course. The International Evening is where pupils at Millfield Prep, from all around the world (but not from the UK) come together for a fantastic evening. The Dining Hall was decorated with flags and the tables were laid out with colourful tablecloths and special international napkins and party poppers. We ate food from India, Italy, Spain, France and theNetherlands. Some students did presentations that were really interesting. For example, Asunta gave a talk on Cadiz and she described it so well she really made me want to go there. Marina also did a great talk on Madrid, the capital of Spain. That was not the end of Marina and Asunta though, as they both performed a brilliant Spanish dance known as Flamenco. After that, Krijn, who is from Holland, described a Magic Bag he had created in Junior Apprentice. The bag sounded amazing. I performed on my violin. It was a traditional Korean folk song called Arirang. I was very nervous but glad that I participated. Everybody did a great job! Oh, I almost forgot to mention Daniela. She was the presenter for the evening and introduced everyone. She was so good and spoke very well. I was so happy to attend this evening and if you ever get invited, you really should go!Alex Chung 7NIK

DT Club

Year 6 Food Technology

The junior DT club has become so popular that we now run a second night during the week. The children have shaped somealuminium this term to make a key ring and are now enhancing their CAD/CAM skills by making personalised fidgetspinners on the laser cutter.

Very careful work has been taking place in Year 6 food technology as they made homemade burgers this week. Children have learnt some new chopping skills and did their best to dice the onion without making their eyes water. Practise makes perfect, so feel free to call on them when you are chopping vegetables at homethis week!

Linguist of the WeekThis week’s linguist is Clarissa Jackson, in 8E, who wrote an amazing paragraph about media in French. She used highly effective sentences, such as “La semaine prochaine je voudrais lire un roman policier car les romans policiers sont très effrayants et passionnants en même temps.” Well done to her!

Sadly the Book Fair has now finished, but Miss Newman spotted a group of boys happily reading their brand new books outside in the sunshine.

Inter-House Bake OffTuesday afternoon was another frantic afternoon for ourInter-House bakers. This week’s technical challenge was the ultimate Victoria Sponge. Each baker was allowed 150g caster sugar, 150g soft margarine, 150g self raising flour, 1 tsp baking powder, 3 eggs and 3 tbsp strawberry jam with which to concoct their culinarymasterpieces. Nearly everyone opted for the creaming method over the “all-in-one” technique. Sasha was impressive with her sieve, sifting the flour high above the bowl, declaring she had “watched a video” to refine her technique. It certainly ensured that her sponge was extremely light when it came out ofthe oven.Last week’s winners, Jutes, started well and all had produced an excellent sponge mixture. However, they struggled with their time management of the task and were left withseconds to get their sponges out of the oven, filled and onto the judging table. This last minute rush resulted in the cake sustaining a few cracks which cost them dearly. Danes had some issues with oven temperature, which they needed to overcome, but they still managed to produce an excellent tasting, light sponge. This week’s winner was the Angles team who also had to cope with Maddie’s earlydeparture for netball trials. Charlie and Ella worked really well together to finish offMaddie’s bake as well as their own, demonstrating excellent team work.Well done everyone! The results were:1st - Angles 2nd - Saxons 3rd - Danes 4th - JutesMrs Sandford

Battle of the Sets! Year 7 concertThe Year 7 singing concert entitled “Battle of the Sets” will take place in the Recital Hall on Friday 19th May at 6.00pm (approximate finish time 7.30pm) directly after the ‘Moving up into Year 8’ presentation. Each class has been preparing their own song to perform in addition to all pupils performing five songs together as part of the Year 7 choir. We are delighted to be welcoming Mark Lawson to adjudicate the evening and crown the winner of the best individual class song. All Year 7 pupils have worked exceptionally hard in their music lessons preparing the songs and we would love to see you there.Details are as follows:Thursday 18th May:4-5pm - all Year 7s are excused from after school activities to attend a rehearsal in the Recital Hall. Please let me know if there are any problems attending this rehearsal.Friday 19th May:4-5pm - all Year 7s are excused from games to attend a rehearsal in the Recital Hall.5pm – supper5.30pm – ALL Year 7s gather in the Junior Hall for a warm-up.6.00pm – Concert in the Recital Hall (finishing time approximately 7.15pm)Dress code – As the weather will be warm, we ask that boys wear formal grey trousers with their short-sleeved blue check shirt; girls should wear culottes with their short-sleeved white blouse and white ankle socks. Blazers will not be required.Good luck Year 7!Mrs Sturges

EAL Pupil of the WeekThis week’s ‘EAL pupil of the week’ award goes to Maria Lluch Alzaga. Even though she has only been with us since the start of the term, she has impressed all of her teachers with her effort and enthusiasm. She has settled in well, making friends easily with the other pupils in her class and quickly learned all the new routines. Maria’s hardworking attitude means that she is progressing well and using her new vocabulary all the time. A great start to the term Maria! Miss Henson

It’s been a busy week at Berewall. On Friday it was the International Evening and some of the girls got dressed up in clothes from their home countries. The lovely sunny weather means we have managed to have our first outdoor BBQ, and on Wednesday Rachel celebrated her birthday. She had requested a chocolate cake with vanilla icing, oh and don’t forget thechocolate buttons on top. Mrs L couldn’t resist adding marshmallows too!@BerewallHouse

You know summer is on its way when the Chestnut waterslide comes out. The boys had a fantastic time, slipping and sliding their way down the slippery slope. The cold hose is always a bit of a shock to thesystem though! On Wednesday night we held a surprise birthday party for Adam, with pizza, cake, treats and terrible singing!@MPS_Chestnut

On Tuesday night Mrs Smith set the girls a task to redesign the school uniform. The girls had to work in teams and could only use clothing in their wardrobes. The designs were very creative and the girls all had a great time thinking of new alternatives! @MPS_Hollies

Sometimes the Hollies girls just need downtime, so on Saturday night they all sat down as a house and watched Britain’s Got Talent. It was a good opportunity for the girls to seek inspiration for the next time they put on their ‘Hollies Got Talent’ evening.

Golf CricketThe golfers had a very busy weekend. Patience Rhodes and Harriet Lockley played in the Ladies County Championships at Burnham with Patience qualifying as 6th seed and Harriet as 2nd seed after the first 36 holes. In the knockout stages Patience met a strong opponent in the last 16 but Harriet fought her way through to the semi finals before losing out on the last to a 1 handicap golfer. A great performance by both girls! On Sunday Freddie Turnell, Sam Pepler, Joanna Champion and Oliver Scriven travelled up to Wellington College for the 2017 Wellington Salver. It was one of the tightest tree lined courses the pupils will have played and was a great experience for all four pupils. The competition was two times around the same 9 holes with all the prep golfers improving massively on their second nine when they had got to grips with the course.Sam (12 over) and Freddie (8 over) played excellently to finish 3rd in the gross competition. In the nett competition, Sam and Freddie finished 4th and Joanna and Oliver finished 11th in a strong field of over thirty schools. The final competition was on the Monday and a regular venue of Sunningdale Ladies.Patience and Harriet joined Freddie and Sam with all playing steady golf with Freddie leading the way on 7 over. Patience and Harriet were just 1 shot behind on 8 over and Sam after a slow start fought back well to finish 14 over. Unfortunately, there was no gross prize as both Millfield teams would have finished in the top 3 but in the nett competition Sam and Freddie finished in 4th place and Harriet and Patience finished in a creditable 12th out of over thirty schools. The golfers now move on to Woodbury Park on Friday with Sam, Freddie, Harriet and Patience playing in the regional pairs qualifiers.

Both Caitlin and Frankie leave for Nottingham this Thursday to play for Somerset in the U14 National County Cup finals over the weekend. All the very best of luck to them and the rest of the Somerset team.

SailingMillfield Prep Schools’ Regatta was a rather windy affair, with the breeze up around 20-25 knots, with gusts of 32! To put that in perspective, they cancel the America’s Cup at 25 knots. Andrew Simpson Sailing Centre did a fantastic job of ensuring that everyone got on the water and experienced racing in some challenging conditions, by running short sharp races. Boris Findlay and Zara Harrison did quite well (2nd, 3rd and 7th)

but not quite well enough to take any silverware home. They were however one of the few crews that stayed upright the entire day!

This week...This week in assemblies we have been talking about putting in the effort in order to achieve a goal. We discussed the phrase “If a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing well.” The children listened to a story about a girl who wanted to grow vegetables but then discovered how much hard work it entailed. Year 1 and 2 are growing veggies in our allotments at the moment and with this dry weather they arecertainly having to put in the extra effort to ensure they don’t wither and die!Mrs Blasdale

Reception House BuildingThe reception class had lots of fun making houses for their clay animals.

Year 2During the last week we have been learning about different types of habitats. This week Year 2 have been exploring the school looking for microhabitats. We found a variety ofmicrohabitats under stones, in long grass and under logs. The children had great funidentifying the creatures and then discussing why the habitats were good for them.

In maths, the children have been learning to read the time. We have been playing many bingo games to help make the connection between the written and digital time. For example, 10:15 is the same as quarter past ten while 10:45 is the same as quarter to eleven.

BE 80 and 90 are on the Saturday with the BE100 and BE100 Open taking place on the Sunday. As well as dressage, show jumping and cross country thrills and spills, there will be lots of shopping stalls and plenty of lovely food and drink to enjoy. All parents and pupils are very welcome to join us to spectate on either day and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of thePrep School.

We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible over the weekend for what promisesto be an exciting weekend ofequestrian sport. Hayley Newman

Pre-SchoolAfter our visit to the supermarket the Frogs decided to look at and taste some of the fruit and vegetables they saw. The children began by playing a fun game whereby they had to close their eyes really tightly and then guess the fruit by its feel, taste and smell. The children then used the remainder of the fruit and turned them into a fruit salad. They carefully used a knife and a chopping board to cut the fruit into smaller pieces. The children’s fruit salads looked, smelt and tasted delicious!

The Tadpoles and Tiddlers have been exploring the colour pink. They have been painting with pink, exploring how you make the colour pink, finding pink objects and making beautiful, sparkly pink jellyfish.

The children have also enjoyed using their new role play road area. They have been learning how to use a roundabout and fill their vehicles with petrol!

Continuing with the superhero theme the Frogs dressed up as a superhero. They chose their outfit and struck a superhero pose. Each child used an iPad to take a photograph of their friend dressed up. The children then thought about their superpower; running really fast, seeing in dark, jumping really high and making clouds to hide in!

Minis SwimmingThe Minis have had a brilliant week as they have been having fun in the Prep School swimming pool.

Mrs Collins ran the sessions and it was wonderful to see so many happy and confident children enjoying the water.

They enjoyed playing with the toys, balls and floats. A huge thank you to Mrs Collins forrunning such great sessions.

See you all next week for MinisWater Play. Wellies and waterproofs are essential (swimming costumes if the weather is nice although we are not intending children to sit in paddling pools unless they feel the need!)

MINIS PLUS Photo of the WeekThe Minis Plus group enjoyed a veryexciting afternoon of tennis. A big thank you to Mrs Thomas forrunning this brilliant session.
