With so much activity and reporting within the club plus Vintage OBS Day and the combined

Sunbeam/ Morris Spitbraai; this has turned into a 20 pager again.

In addition Bertha, Clare, Malcolm, Paul, Richard & Willie visited the Ficksburg Steam Exibition.

I think there is more than sufficient interest amongst us to enjoy the account. Must go next

year! I was lucky enough to visit the Bressingham Steam Museum in south-east England in 1980

and on a working day when a traction engine was driving a threshing machine with a long belt

drive. Also had a footplate ride on a BIG locomotive.

THE CHAIRMAN’S BRIEF:

As you know we will be having our AGM on the 18th of May, when an account of the

finances and other aspects of the Club will be reported. It is also an important social

gathering where we can chat with each other over a cup of tea, cakes or something from the

bar. This year we have a special talk on “Stars of Sandstone 2014” by Paul Hoffman. It is a

Steam, Military, Agricultural & Transportation Heritage exhibition in Ficksburg (Free State)

which six of us attended. I found it extremely interesting and worth the trip but you will

have to wait to hear the details from Paul.

Unfortunately Paul is stepping down as Vice-Chairman due to personal commitments. We

thank him greatly for his hard work and valuable contribution to the Club.

A line up of great and exciting events await us in these coming months. Let’s enjoy our

beautiful Cape Autumn in good company, particularly the braai at Andrew Murray

Children’s Home in Wellington. We do not want to miss this event especially organized for

us. Our Club has been supporting their wonderful work for years and we will continue to

do so. 11th May at R30 pp for lunch.

We welcome the following new members to our Club: John & Annika Carne, G.J. & Trix

Vlok and most recently, Ivan & Samantha Le Grange.

You might know that in recent months Tony Harrison, Bobby Moore and Frikkie Muller

have been under the knife but I am pleased to report that they are all well now and back in

full swing.

I trust you will fulfil your civic duties on the 7th of May and that you will do it responsibly.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the Morris Moms. Have a fantastic day!

Looking forward to seeing you all soon. Keep warm.

Regards

Malcolm

I did not solicit a latest report from Erwin Schumann because this issue filled

up real quick. I imagine he must be near to finished quite soon and will let

us have a final report. Thanks, I will be in touch.

Gerda had a break from “scribing” and thanks Owen for your account of the

Rally. Have you checked: www.MMOC.co.za

RECENT EVENTS:

DURBAN RALLY 2014 Bertha

Dankie Bobbles, we love you!

Die Go/Stops is maar ‘n probleem, maar as jy reeds op die ander provinsies se sleg paaie gery het dan sê

jy gou ‘dit is maar reg so’.

Die man is ‘n kwadrupleeg.

In my wysheid pak ek Pa se slaapklere dubbeld in en niks

6

keer as ek dit optrek.

man in die klub is.

kuier-kuier gery). Vir my persoonlik is geborgenheid baie belangrik.

Gelukkig is haar kaarte

Die volgende more

Johannesburg klub.

was my goedgesind. Ek was baie dankbaar, want my Jorsie sou versuip in die reen.

strydbyl is.

nie. Die normale ou ‘boring driving skills’ is hierby geinkorporeer. Ons het dit geniet, die Durbanklub

kry 10 uit 10!! Well done!

werk!!

2014 National Rally – Venue Drakensberg Midlands Scribe: - Owen Gush

Morris Minor Before I tell you anything about the rally, please allow me the space to sing the praises of the four amazing cars we used. Our trip to and from the Berg involved almost 3,200 km and the only problems encountered were:

having to replace Peter Albert’s generator (actually the car’s “generator”) and

cooling down Owen’s electric fuel pump going through the Karoo.

Venue One would have to go a long way to find a more tranquil venue to host a rally. The central Drakensberg is a beautiful area away from the hurly burly of city traffic and we were most fortunate in having had almost perfect weather during the five days involved.

8

Accommodation Durban Branch did us proud by putting us up at The Nest – this being a three star hotel which provided comfortable, clean, spacious rooms. The food and service lived up to all expectations.

Welcome Dinner All participants registered on Sunday afternoon and attended the Welcome dinner that evening. The skills of the women and men were tested by having to guess what the small sealed bags contained. Good fun was had by all.

Concours judging Monday morning saw participants preparing their cars for Concours and the Judges followed on by conducting the necessary examinations.

I was fortunate in having owned a cottage during the late 80’s and early 90’s in a complex overlooking the Drakensberg Sun Hotel, about 5km from where we were staying. So in the afternoon I took Sandy and Bertha Laubscher to show them the area. This involved a steep climb of about a 1,000 meters, resulting in us looking down on the hotel – an awe-inspiring view. I found this quite nostalgic as memories came rushing back about the weekends we used to spend there with my children when I worked in Johannesburg.

Fun Run and Skills Driving All credit to Durban Branch for thinking out of the box insofar as the Fun-Run/Driving Skills was concerned. The events were combined in that three driving skills tests were included to be carried out along the way. Drivers were timed going up a gradual incline of about 1 km and then had to try and do the return run in the same time. Drivers were also asked to estimate what speed they could average over a 20 km stretch and were then timed accordingly. Finally at one of the farm stalls along the route they had set out a parking bay that drivers had to reverse park into and poles left at the width of the vehicles to stop the front tyres at these markers without touching same.

Cape Town Branch was later to learn that as a team they had won the Driving Skills award – well done guys.

That evening had everyone partaking in the Masked Dance and here too Cape Town came to the fore in that Laurie and Helmien Claassen walked away with the 1st prize.

Rocker Cover racing This rally saw the introduction of an exciting new event where Rocker Covers have been converted into small racing cars and are raced on a track that has been established by P E Branch. This event holds out much potential and could well be introduced as a standard part of all future rallies. All credit to P E Branch and Colin Stock for having come up with this idea.

Cape Town entry before going to KZN

The Falconery Here the highlights were an exhibition of the prowess of the Black Eagle and Fish Eagle. We were witness to these birds, particularly the Black Eagle riding a thermal so high that one almost lost sight of the bird. Then on instructions of the Falconer, the eagle dives down from that height at almost supersonic speed to whip a piece of chicken out of his hand.

What an awe-inspiring experience and the cry of the Fish Eagle sends shivers down one’s spine. Truly an African experience and haunting sound where you consider yourself fortunate to be living here in Africa.

Drakensberg Boys Choir Just when we thought that the Banana Boys could not possibly crown all the experiences we had enjoyed thus far, they managed to time our visit to include a concert by the Drakensberg Boys Choir. The theme, other than the singing which is always truly beautiful, we were again reminded that this is Africa with much of the afternoon devoted to the enjoyment of the drums and the type of dancing allied thereto.

Finale I have no doubt that I echo the sentiment of all the people who had the pleasure of attending the rally in that it was especially sad to have to say Goodbye.

Well done to The Sharks – nice to know you can do far more than just play rugby.

I just read an article on the dangers of drinking....

It scared the hell out of me.

So that's it!

After today, no more reading!

VINTAGE OBS DAY 24th March 2014 Ed.

The day dawned somewhat wet. Fortunately it slowly cleared up but stayed overcast. We arrived sort of late morning and found Lower Main Road OBS quite active with people walking about and checking cars, busy at eating places and what have you; junk shops. That is where we bumped into Norman Penfold and Bobby Moore (of TV fame) who was having himself weighed on a big machine that you have to insert a coin (WOW) to make it work! You have to step on a platform and read your weight (not mass) on a big dial like a Morris speedometer but the size of a wheel. Amazing technology they had in the old days. Digital, PC’s and cellphones (Copy, Fax?) were unheard of in those days! By all accounts some of the Morries had already left when we arrived and we still had the best turn out of all clubs. Renault also turned out well. Let us do the same and better next year! OBS is the local vernacular for Observatory and lots of history to discuss. (Old Brown Sherry is also OBS!) The consensus is that this can become an annual event with some observation and improvement ie. Street vendors with samoosas, hot dogs, coffee on the run, one way street, etc. Well done Hazel.

COMBINED SUNBEAM / MORRIS SPITBRAAI Pringle Bay 6th April 2014 Ed.

Waiting for a Sunbeam? 8 Sunbeams turned up, 3 Morries and 35 people. Various other rides included a Rover P5, Early Merc 190, Gerhard in a early Beetle! And a large looking Porsche. The ride to Rooi Els is one of the best in the Western Cape and right on our doorstep. Are we lucky? Yes! On to Pringle bay is an extension of that “lucky”! If you want to prolong it carry on to Kleinmond?? Lekker in die Kaap ne. Why am I saying RIDE? Because the biker boys have one of the best RIDES you can get on a bike if that is what you DO!

The atmosphere at Drosters Centre was convivial, the venue was superb and the Spitbraai was to die for. Lamb from Namibia is nearly as good as Karroo Lamb. Mr Spitbraai or MrsPitbraai (www) we must use you some day!

SANDSTONE HERITAGE TRUST B Laubscher

Orals in kosmos vol in blom!

Die eerste dag was

militere tenks of stoom trekkers gaan kyk.

met mekaar en het opdrag gekry ‘to pull out all stops to show case our heritage’.

rooi osse is baie mooi versorg.

Saans is praatjies aangebied.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR from Sandy Gush

On day 2 of our trip to the Drakensberg, the convoy stopped in the beautiful town of Clarens. It was time to fill up

the cars petrol tanks but empty the human tanks. I had read a notice on the toilet door that I needed R1 to open the

door which prompted me to take my purse with me. Since Bertha had already got the key, there was no need for me

to also pay the R1 so I hung on outside with my purse in my hand.

When I entered the loo, I didn't want to put my purse on the floor so I put it neatly on top of the toilet roll holder and

when I left the loo, I left the purse as well. I only noticed at 10pm that evening, in Harrismith, when I wanted to pay

for dinner, that I was minus my purse. After reeling in shock, we tried to get hold of the shop owner and with the

help of Johan Bruce, we managed to get the name and telephone number of the chap.

The owners response to us was "Do you know where you live? This is Africa. Just go and reapply for

everything." My heart sank into my shoes. I didn't let that incident stop me from enjoying the rally, but I knew when

I got back to Cape Town, I had to deal with the reality of standing in long queues to reapply for my ID, drivers

licence, bank cards and whatever else I'd lost, which I did as soon as we got back.

3 weeks after we returned to Cape Town, I got a call from a gentleman who had managed to track me down by

looking through the business cards in my purse. He got hold of my sister who gave him my number. A little girl had

15

picked up my purse in the street in Clarens and handed it to him. The money was gone but all my cards, ID book and

drivers was all there.

The kind gentleman posted my purse to me through the SA Post Office and 7 days later I was in possession of my

property.

A big Thank you goes to everyone who was so supportive during my ordeal. To Michael Kruyshaar in Clarens,

thank you for renewing my faith in humanity. I will pay it forward when my turn comes around.

Out on an intimate date.

Commenting on a complaint from a Mr. Arthur Purdey about a large gas bill, a spokesman for

North West Gas said, 'We agree it was rather high for the time of year. It's possible Mr. Purdey

has been charged for the gas used up during the explosion that destroyed his house.'
