Salam sejahtera and Salam 1Malaysia,

First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to the Board of Executive Committee members of MSAJ

Kanto 2010, the Advisors of MSAJ and the members of MSAJ for making term 2010 an excellent year for

MSAJ.

2010 was a busy year and the Board had worked hard to improve and develop MSAJ as an association

representing Malaysian students in Japan. This newsletter is compiling what we had done in 2010 and

hopefully it will be reference for the future development of MSAJ, not only in Kanto but also all around

Japan.

2010 was also the year to implement the changes that were agreed from previously, mainly (1) MSAJ Kanto

worked as one Division and not the Central (Pusat). And also (2) the Bureau systems were put into action,

allowing members to participate according to their interest.

However, there are still lots to work on the changes and development of MSAJ, to make MSAJ a better

student association for students. These developments will not come through without the cooperation from all

parties involved in MSAJ; the Advisors, the Board of Executive Committee, the members etc.

Finally, I would like to congratulate the new elected board and wishes them all the best. Also, I would like to

urge members and students to participate actively in the development of MSAJ and the contribution to

members and society.

Malaysian Students’ Association in Japan (MSAJ) was established in 1976, with the main objectives

of uniting Malaysian students in Japan and taking care the welfare of its members. This association is opened

to all Malaysian students who are studying or taking courses for more than six months.

As the number of Malaysian students has increased from time to time, the association has also grown bigger,

and at present, there‟re 5 Divisions: Kanto, Kansai, Tohoku, Hokuriku and KYUMA.

Note: Kanto Division covers 12 Prefectures: Tokyo, Chiba, Saitama, Kanagawa, Gunma, Tochigi, Ibaraki,

Yamanashi, Shizuoka, Gifu, Aichi, Mie.

Below shows the stakeholders of MSAJ.

Structures of MSAJ

Year 2009 and before

MSAJ Kanto worked as the Central (Pusat), which mainly controlled the Registration and Funds of MSAJ.

The main reasons were (1) MSAJ started from Tokyo, which is near to the Embassy of Malaysia and (2) Most

Malaysian students focused in Tokyo and Kanto area.

Year 2010 and beyond

Discussions among Divisions of MSAJ were made in 2008 and 2009 and concluded with the Amendment of

Constitution and Structure 2009. With the growing number of Malaysian students all around Japan, Divisions

were created to reach out the needs of students and to create platforms of communication among Malaysian

students.

In 2010, MSAJ Kanto started off being one of the Divisions of MSAJ. However, Majlis Tertinggi (Higher

Council) couldn‟t be achieved in 2010. The reasons are among such as follows:

1) Each Divisions (including Kanto) focused on each Divisions. Cooperation Inter-Divisions were to be

improved.

2) Divisions are not active due to lack of information passed down by seniors.

Fig. The structures of MSAJ

Bureaus of MSAJ

The Bureau system was focused in MSAJ Kanto. The SIX Bureaus of MSAJ and the objectives are as such below:

Web System Crew: To build, maintain and maintain the systems of MSAJ

Registration: To register students and maintain the database of MSAJ

Welfare & Communication: To communicate and provide welfare to the stakeholders of MSAJ

Cultural & Social: To develop Malaysian culture in Japan

Sports & Recreation: To develop sports and recreation among members

Academic & Career: To develop academic and career among members

NOTE: The Bureaus are led by Executive Committee members of Bureaus BUT the participation is opened to

members of MSAJ

10

Administration and execution

Previously, the activities and programs were administered and executed only by the EXCOs of MSAJ (Model 1).

However, with this model, ALL the events (average 6 to 7 annually) and administration of MSAJ were ONLY the

responsibilities of EXCOs, which caused burden to EXCO members, who are also students.

In 2010, some of the events/programs (eg MSAJ Career Fair) were administered by a special committee, consisted

by EXCO of MSAJ and members who volunteered (Model 2)

Also, some of the activities/programs were given responsibilities to the Bureau (Model 3), for example Hanami.

This will help EXCOs to improve leadership and management skills. It will be ideal to have more participation

from members in each Bureau and be involved not only in the activities but also the administration and the

development of MSAJ (Development of MSAJ through Development of Bureaus).

Other models are hoped to be developed, to fill the needs of managing MSAJ as an effective organization while

improving soft skills (leadership, management etc) among students.

Introduction

“Travel and Portrait Photography” is the first

photography workshop MSAJ has ever organized. The

workshop was initiated by a group of students and fans

of Saiful Nang who hoped to meet and learn from him

in Tokyo.

Objectives of Workshop

The objectives of this workshop are as follows:

・Image compositions ( Ro3, symmetry etc)

・Understanding contrast & color

・Understanding lines & pattern

・Usage of lenses and appropriate focal ranges

・Setting the camera for portraits and travel

・How to take travel photos that have selling potentials.

・How to take portrait pictures that people are willing

to pay a thousand ringgit for it

・Practical Session: Learn the way Saiful Nang shoots

photos

Throughout the workshop, we felt that the trainer and

participants have achieved the above goals.

Schedule of Workshop

The schedule of the workshop was as follows:

0900-1000: Arrival of participants

1000-1115 : Basic Theories of Photography

1115-1125 : Break

Conclusion and Thoughts on Workshop

Being an inaugural photography workshop

co-organized by MSAJ, this event is promising as

many of Malaysian students are really into

photography. Besides, we tied up a good relationship

with Saiful Nang, who is also the Principal of Malaysia

Academy of Photography Arts (MAPA), and we can

look forward to a re-collaboration with him in making

a more successful photography workshop in the future.

Lunar New Year Celebration

Date: 27 February 2010

Time: 1000hrs to 1230hrs

Venue: Rasa Malaysia Restaurant, Ginza

MSAJ organized the Lunar New Year Celebration at

Rasa Malaysia Restaurant, Ginza, one of the few

Malaysian restaurants in Japan. In spite of exam season,

about 50 students, staff from the Embassy and working

Malaysians in Japan attended the celebration. The

celebration started with a short speech by the President

of MSAJ Kanto Division and the guests were then

invited to have their meal. It was buffet style

Malaysian food. Satay, Nasi Lemak, Curry etc were

served. Everyone was free to chat and mixed around.

The celebration ended at 1230hrs. It was a good

opportunity for everyone to exchange ideas and know

each other in spite of the small crowd.

Orientation

Orientation of students from AAJ and IBT

Date: 21-23 March 2010

Venue: Embassy of Malaysia in Japan, Toko Hotel,

Narita View Hotel.

MSAJ with the cooperation with KUJ had help JPA to

run the orientation program for the new students of

AAJ and IBT. I was responsible to lead the group of

Executive Committee from MSAJ and KUJ

The orientation was divided into 2 groups, which is

21-22 March for Group 1 and 23 March for Group 2.

The orientation for Group 1 was held in Toko Hotel

and the Embassy of Malaysia while the orientation for

Group 2 was held in Narita View Hotel. In general, we

were responsible to help JPA to greet the students in

Narita airport and to send the students to their

destinations. I also gave short explanation to students

about MSAJ. With the help from EXCOs from MSAJ

Tohoku and KUJ, we also registered new students.

Hopefully MSAJ can continue help JPA to run the

orientation program and give good FIRST

IMPRESSION to new students in the future.

As previous years, MSAJ and KUJ had supported

HRD Embassy of Malaysia in the orientation of KTJ at

Toko Hotel. With the support from seniors all over

Japan, we received the new students at Narita airport

and follow the ride to Toko Hotel, where the new

students stayed a night before being sent to their own

colleges. The students were given briefing back in

Putrajaya and therefore they only spent a day in Tokyo.

The students were tired of the long flight and the

excitement of new life in the Land of Rising Sun. This

program helps seniors to know more about the juniors.

3cards with the same number/color/pattern. So, if we

can find the other 2 who wear the same card as us we'll

The fastest group will win the prize if they can really

Malaysian Students‟ Association in Japan (MSAJ)

Kanto Division organized Summer Gathering Part 1:

Networking and Project Management, as an effort to

National Colleges and Organizations attended the

program. A short introduction on the event and

introduction of MSAJ was done by Ben Foo before

going into Session 1: Networking.

Session 1: Networking aimed to understand each other

by making introduction of participants/ organizations

and the Malaysian environment in own area.

Participants were divided into 5 groups according their

affiliation; 2 groups for Universities, 1 group for

National Colleges, 1 group for Japanese Language

School and 1 group for Organizations (IPIJ). Self

introduction and discussion on Malaysian environment

in their own area were made. As time was limited,

divided into 5 groups but were mixed without

regarding their universities/colleges/organizations.

Each group was given an assignment to think of

issues in Malaysia and with the knowledge and

resources they have, solutions were discussed.

Presentations were made and comments/questions

were given by participants. Among the issues were

usage of English in Malaysian education, crime rate,

low salary, traffic congestion and subsidies. Issues

were current issues. However, concrete solutions were

hard to derive because of limited authority as students

Therefore, positioning is important to discover the

ability to solve issues. Issues involving students

(youth) should be discussed in future.

Participants were actively involved in the program and

communicating among each other. As feedbacks from

participants, the program was interesting and such

program should be continued in the future. Also,

understandings among organizations were made and

further collaboration will be made in near future.

However, there were also feedbacks noting that more

concrete and ongoing projects should be discussed.

(3) Nice experience but the route is no end.

(4) I will keep my leg in fridge and won‟t use it

for two weeks.

(5) Should have subsided with more money.

(6) Too crowded.

d) Conclusion

I couldn‟t say this is a success but overall is

still a success.

Problems:

I. We didn‟t have lots of time together. At first, I

thought by dividing into groups we can make

sure everyone keep up and if there anyone lost

we will realise sooner. Every group will meet at

every pit. However, it‟s too crowded that we

hardly move a bit. Furthermore, not everyone

has the same physical strength. We can‟t wait

everyone at the every pit because of the time

and the crowd. In the end we just were walking

in our particular group. This is not our objective.

We even couldn‟t take a group picture on the

peak of Mount Fuji. To me this is the most

sadness place. Luckily we still at least have

group picture at gogoume.

There are places to improve.

I. We should subsidy more money.

Although we agreed to give subsidy for food

only, we should subsidy about 3000yen or more

as the travel fee and equipment are so

expensive. I think we MSAJ afford it. The

equipment such as torchlight (1000yen),

oxygen (850yen), stick (700yen), shoes

(7000yen) and raincoat (500yen) are already

cost 10050yen. From Shinjuku to gogoume

costs 5800yen plus return.

II. We should assemble at 五合目 instead of eki

As there are buses from Shinjuku to 五合目

and 五合目 is not very wide. It is easier and

cheaper to meet at the 五合目.

III. I think we need to make this event longer so

that we can reach our objective.

We can try something like 一泊二日 to reduce

the tireness of participants and we can do some

events during the rest time. It is just an idea to

Kosen. 17 seniors and 7 Lecturers from Kosen and

Universities around Japan attended the program.

The morning session was Q&A session where juniors

interacted with seniors to know more especially about

lifestyle in Japan. After lunch, the session was passed

on to the lecturers to introduce and give information on

Kosen and the courses available.

This program brought information to the juniors as

there were many questions which Seniors can answer,

such as life in Kosen, in Japan, Halal Food, etc.

Hopefully, this program can be continued in years to
