Saturday, 23rd

It was departure day but we had a Cultural visit in the city centre with those who left in the evening or next day in the morning. We, as host partners, would like to say that it has been a very interesting experience. And when we said goodbye we were both: happy because it all went really well and the project has been really interesting, we have met very nice and hard-working people… but also sad because it had finished.

LPD Project at “Stefan Procopiu” High School I. ABOUT THE TARGET GROUP One of the first activities organized by the Romanian team within LPD project was the selection of the target group on account of a well established procedure (the selection was followed by the initial evaluation of the target group by questionnaire). 60 learners were selected, presenting the following characteristics:

25% of the learners are from the countryside;

87% are female, 13% are male;

40% have average studies;

the learners are aged between 19 - 51, with predominance of persons aged 30 - 45;

35% of the learners are parents of students in our high-school that manifested the desire to find out methods of solving conflicts with their children, and, as a result, to improve relationship with their children. Participating in the activities of the project, they hope to improve theoretical knowledge on positive discipline, to find out disciplining methods and techniques proper for their children behaviour, favouring the development of better relations. Many of them admit that they do not know the knowledge and abilities necessary to manage the problem behaviour of their children and they admit they are ore preoccupied with eliminating unwanted behaviour and less to cultivated desired behaviour. One of the learners is a grandmother that brings up her grandchildren;

5% of the learners are former students of our high-school, some are graduates of year 2013. They are female, from the country-side and are not included in the formal education system. They were selected, even if they are not parents yet, as the activities of parental education (based, in our project, on positive discipline and education without violence) addresses future parents;

40% are teachers as well as parents, as a result, their motivation to participate in the project is even bigger. These adults, either as teachers, or as parents, go often through difficult moments regarding their relationship with children. Participating in this project, the learners wanted to learn efficient methods to help them interact more effectively and better both with the students and with their children. Moreover, many teachers are also form masters and they want to improve their knowledge on this theme to offer parents useful advice and information for a proper interaction with their children;

20% are adults that interact with children and parents (school counsellors, hostel administrators, foster parents). As in the case of teachers, these learners are also parents, their motivation to participate in the activities of the project being big. These learners, aware of the fact that the source of the problems is in fact the way adults manage different problems and conflicts between adults/parents and students/children, want to improve their knowledge on positive discipline, to exchange experience, methods and good practice regarding education without violence, both to optimize the relationship with their children and to be more self

Amici del centro socio-culturale San Francesco

(Italy, Umbertide)

TARGET GROUP Our target group is various and large. We worked all the time with the collaboration of the Municipality of Umbertide. For us the project represented the occasion to create a big and solid net between different actors in our town as teachers, parents, primary and secondary schools, educational organisations, cultural association and the Municipality of Umbertide. All the different actors were involved in the project activities and mobilities, at local and international level. They attended several workshops, conferences, working groups, survey research and meetings. The specific target was composed by: teachers, professors, responsible of educational organisation, responsible for children services (welfare and social politics) in the municipality, associates of our organisation, responsible for cultural and environmental organisation.

20

Description of activities Our first step was created the net between all the different actors of our town. After it we involved the association of parents of our schools in a survey research, the base of our work. The parents association took part in the project activity in a permanent way, we meet each other each 2 months and after every international meeting. With them we developed new pedagogical paths and several different workshops on environment, science, active citizenship and positive discipline. All the competences gained during the project were transferred in the local associations and became the base of new approaches and didactical activities, a clear example is represented by the association Lucignolo that promoted at local level the values and competences gained within the project, integrating them in their curriculum. Within the realized activities we want to mention:

Group works with the association of parents (primary and secondary school) “Scienze al centro per genitoria ccompagnati dai figli” session of science

experimentations with parents and children. Learn about science open air through non-formal education activities.

Seminar “Being a parent today, responsible care for parents of children 6-14 years”.

During each meeting there were more or less 40 parents, all the parents involved in the survey research realized for this project. During the first meeting Sergio and Giampaolo made a sort of report about LPD project, showing the activities developed during the mobilities and at local level. It has been a very nice occasion to disseminate our project and talking about our partners and the different subjects. - Meeting and seminars: The Association CSC SAN FRANCESCO in collaboration with the Municipality of Umbertide and other regional towns developed several meetings and seminars to sensitize the community to the different aspects related to discipline, family environment, education and formation. The educational task involves the family with the highest priority, a place of growth and development of children and adolescents. With this awareness the municipalities of the Welfare Area 1, in collaboration with several association involved in the field of education, have promoted "Growing together Parents and Children”, a project designed to help families through a process of mutual growth, to widen knowledge and discuss on what characterizes the parent-child relationship. Local results These two years we worked with one main goal; help parents to interact with their children with positive discipline. From this point of view we are very satisfied because all the works realized involved not only people from our organisation but, overall, people from different associations and organisations. As main result we want to underline the fact that all the public and private entities, which took part in our activities, integrated the competences and skills gained in the future programs of next year. The workshops realized with the Parent’s Association are the best example, they asked to responsible for education to integrate these activities in the classic curriculum of our schools. Another kind of results is represented by the involvement of a lot of different actors at local level, as wrote above, the fact that we were able to create a solid net between citizens, organisations and schools is considered a great results. Mobilities We took part in every mobilities, 8 trainers and 16 learners. After each mobility we organised a meeting with our stakeholders in which we explained all the activities developed. It was a great occasion also to have a feedback from our learners, people that come from different ages, different cultural and social background. As we wrote in the evaluation we would like to mention the mobility in Romania, for everyone of us was the first time in this country and it was unbelievable, from any point of view, the exciting for the first project meeting, a new countries, 11 countries and a lot of new friends. By the way we enjoyed a lot, maybe more, the Italian mobility, and we are very glad for your feedback. Thanks a lot to everyone of you!!!!!

I. Target group:

We work at an Adult’s school, so we have a great variety of students in our Centre. Our students are from 18 to 90 years old! So it is easy to understand it was very complicated to choose our target group, especially because students come in very different schedules and to very different groups (from new readers to people who want to learn languages, computers…) Finally, as we thought this European Project was very interesting and especially appealing for parents and grandparents because they are the ones who are bringing up children and teenagers. And our other and very important target group have been our colleagues as far as we are all working with these adults in different groups and subjects. It has not been easy to disseminate the activities of our project with our students because of the way the school works but we have had some “open” activities on the day we have for the school Cultural Activities: Friday. And special ones with our colleagues that have always collaborate and participate actively.

II.Activities:

1.October 2013: Presentation of the Project to our

colleagues: Discussion about Positive Discipline

and target group and about the way we could make the most of it with our students in a school like ours.

Presentation and information of the L.P.D. project to our students: objectives, partnership… This activity was mainly to inform, theoretical: information and questions.

2.Our second activity took place after our meeting in Munich and we worked with our colleagues and target group most of the workshops we did there:

Role-play activities. Angry teenager and unemployed father. Bullying role-play. We based it on a real situation. We think it is a very interesting

one because it involves several students, teachers, headmaster and School Committee.

A daily “home” situation. What for?

To realize the way we sometimes talk and behave with children and youngsters. We think we know but when you see the same situation that you live in your class, at home… you see it in a different way and it makes you realize things very easily. A role-play helps a lot because you have to think the way the other person does, to “put in his/her shoes” for a while.

Page 29: Newsletter nº 6 - Bauskas 2. vidusskola · The leaflet has been used in dissemination activities. It contains information about the project (partners, argument, goal, objectives,

29

How? We thought the best was to involve everybody. So, as we did in Munich, we worked on the firs role-play activity and act it out. Afterwards, we shared opinions and different points of view. Afterwards we gave different role-plays to each small group (three/ four people) to act it out. This is really useful and people can see the mistakes very easily. Then we talked about the things they saw and thought were wrong about adults’ behavior. 3.When we came back from Rzesow, it was not possible to do any activities with our students because the term had already finished. So we decided to do the dissemination with our colleagues so that they could practise them with their students. We had a staff meeting where we explained the things we had been doing in Poland and decided to practise the activity "first person sentences" that we practiced there because we think it was a really interesting activity , not only to implement it with our students but also with our colleagues and in our private lives. We acted out a situation we had previously prepared. Situation: In the school, in an evaluation session some teachers criticize the behavior of some students whose tutor is a new teacher in the school. She feels that when the colleagues criticize her pupils are, in fact, trying to criticize her work. We decided to act it out in two ways: a) The tutor of the group defends her students and attacks the other colleagues saying that their students behavior is much worse than hers because they are disrespectful and so on... b) We practiced the "first person message", following the three steps. WHEN you talk to me like that about my tutoring students I FEEL you are criticizing me, I feel you don't approve the way I do things with them because I am young and you think I have no enough experience. It makes me feel miserable and I try to find reasons to criticize you too, although, in fact, I have no reasons to do so. I WISH you were more sensible and sensitive when you express your opinion about my pupils behavior and that you do it in such a way that I don't feel you think that it is my fault. Everybody thought it had been very interesting because it made us think, realize, empathize and, also, have fun.

4.Back from Umbertide we had a meeting with our colleagues to explain to them the activities and the workshops we did there. They specially liked the music workshop and we decided to do it in one of our classes. We chose a group that comes to the school only to learn and talk about the History of Music because we thought it was the best one for it. We helped the teacher to do it and it was very good fun.

Page 30: Newsletter nº 6 - Bauskas 2. vidusskola · The leaflet has been used in dissemination activities. It contains information about the project (partners, argument, goal, objectives,

30

The pupils realized, as we did in Italy, that music and words are the same in one sense: it is not as important what we say (or sing) if not the way we do it. That's an important lesson in life. Words don't offend, we do. If we are able to explain and talk to people "harmoniously" it will work; if not, it won't. On the other hand, they also learnt (as we did) how important it is to listen to the group, to listen to the "others" to get a much better result and this can be extended to music, work, school, home and so on. Our evaluation of this workshop is very good because it is a very simple activity (anyone can do it) and shows you clearly a very important thing about communication. As the experience was very interesting we decided to repeat it during the Cultural Week with different students from different groups. And so we did! We also shared information about the fifty techniques for positive discipline with our colleagues so that they can use them if they think they are useful. 5.-Our final dissemination activities have taken place just now. In June, during our Cultural

Week. As we have explained before, it is very difficult to work with our students out of their schedule and they would not come on a different day or at the weekend because they are not used to it and find it quite odd. So we have taken the chance of showing them and working with them during this week that all students mix and they don’t have to attend their classes, only (in a free way) the activities that we have organized. The music workshop was a great success because they had very good time and then they were receptive to talk and to

participate in more workshops such as: reflexive and active listening, the behavior contract-technique… Final project meeting with our colleagues to share with them the outcomes of the project: poster, logo, newsletters, book-CD, conclusions… Exchanging of ideas and conclusions about the steps and techniques we should follow with Positive Discipline. III. Mobilities: We have been the last host partner so we asked for a 12 mobility project and, in fact, we have realized 13 altogether staff and learners.

The third activity: October 2013 – may 2014 Trainings for the development of social skills in students

Training for the formation of social skills is part of our work for 7 years. The leading idea is that it is not necessary to wait for the generation of problems and conflicts in relationships between pupils, students and teachers, and even with the start of school to begin working to develop social skills, including mutual knowledge;skills to control anger, conflict resolution, self-understanding of their own emotional states etc. Experience shows us that the classes which have undergone this type of training are characterized by greater maturity in relationships with each other and with teachers; are able to comply with rules. What are the goals of this method? • Increasing the sensitivity towards personality; • Developing tolerance toward other people’s opinions; • Awareness of other people’s feelings; • Having an adequate self-evaluation; • Changing the behavior toward self-control, self-observation, etc. For the period October 2013 - May 2014 in the course of a school year within the curriculum a lesson for working class were held 40 minute training sessions on the following topics: How do we communicate with others? Different communication zones, Emotions and feelings, How to manage my anger?

Work in conducting trainings enrich the knowledge and experience of the team working on the project, develop life skills and active interaction with children who are the main and most important object to which they are directed efforts in dealing with LPD.

The parent and the child had to discuss and prepare a joint artistic project and to implement it with the appropriate equipment. In the process of work emerged several groups in terms of style of communication with your child: • Parents who seize the initiative, and children were placed in a situation of observers; • Parents who have distanced themselves, leaving children to fend for themselves; • Real collaborative discussion, hearing and co-decision on the project and its implementation. At the end of the training were discussed different communication styles and each participant had the opportunity to observe the process of working different approaches of communication with the child and to make self-reflection on their own communicative style.
