A MESSAGE FROM YOUR
PRESIDENT: As we enter the month of August those of uswho have only recently returned from ouroutbound exchange to Germany are wonderingwhen summer is due to arrive in Michigan. Thetrip was wonderful, both in terms of the newfriends that we met in Norderstedt and theBraunschweig/Peine areas, and in terms of theambiance of the old Hanseatic towns and cities ofNorthern Germany that we visited with thosefriends. In my official capacity as club president Ihave invited both of our German host FriendshipForce clubs to visit us here in our favored cornerof Michigan in the future. We may in fact have anopportunity to host one or both of these clubs asearly as 2015 or 2016. As for our planned inbound themed exchange,Fourth Coast Adventure, due to limited responsewe had to cancel this as a FF exchange. But wedecided to offer it as a small, informal visit forthose who were known to us. This will enable usto obtain feedback on the various events beforegoing “global” with the program in 2014. We willstill need club members to help with the variousaspects of planning and to participate with our sixintrepid incoming friends in the week’s many andvaried activites. Of particular note is the plannedexcursion on the tall ship, Friends Good Will, onSaturday, September 21. It will be the ship’slast sail of the season and will be open only toour club and our visitors. To make it happen,we will need to have at least 15 passengers (andcan take as many as 28). In addition to the sixambassadors, we will be looking forsomewhere between nine and 22 members ofour club to accompany them. Keep the date inmind and let one of us (Lyn or Dave) know ifyou wish to participate in that component of
the exchange. Cost is $40 and we will follow withdinner in South Haven. Meanwhile, our own club is growing. We haveadded six new members in the past two months.Welcome aboard to Robin and Margaret Bowles ofGrand Rapids, Connie Corriveau of Holland, DennisMahoney of Kalamazoo, Linda Love Stewart ofGrand Rapids, and Debra Williamson of Holland. Iinvite you all to “get your feet wet” with some aspectof the September inbound exchange - possibly byjoining the ambassadors in one or more of theirplanned activities, serving as a day host or driver, agreeing to be a dinner host, or joining the group forthe welcome party or fair well dinner. As a bit ofencouragement, the Board recently agreed thatpreference be given first to host families thensecond to new club members for the trip on theFriends Good Will. We continue to work on various things that willmake our club more visible in the West Michigancommunity. In addition to the shirts, we have alsoengaged a Grand Rapids company to create a free-standing club banner for us. If all goes well thatshould be available to welcome our guests inSeptember. Also, the Board has discussed thepossibility of having a club pin that could be givenout by club members to ambassadors they arehosting or to host families when they are onoutbound exchanges. Stay tuned for more on thatas well as for some other ideas that are percolatingon the Board. Looking into the future a bit, I should be receivingnotice from FFI in Atlanta concerning our requesteddestinations for outbound exchanges in 2015 (weare still scheduled to travel to Brazil in 2014). Wewill have to have our requests in to Atlanta this fall,so begin to dream a little about where you would liketo go in 2015. We will be canvassing themembership in the coming months to get your inputfor our top three choices. Dave Hargreave
