Welcome to the May newsletter.

Unfortunately, Tony has been away to places like Badminton so was unable to write his piece for this month. I am sure he will report back to you all in the June edition.

Meanwhile, you have all been very busy and doing well. So well done. We have our first Hunter Trial coming up at Boughton Park on Sunday which will be very exciting. Let us hope it is a beautiful day for us all. There is lots of training going on so I expect great things from everyone and maybe, I dream, I’ll see some of you at Lincoln this year.

Good luck with all your endeavours and happy riding!

RFRC Team News

I would like to say a HUGE congratulation to Jane Vargerson and Tony for their incredible 4th place at the Equi-Theme Intermediate Winter Championships, a very well deserved result!

• Horse Trials (ODE) Qualifier @ Ely Eventing Centre - Saturday 10th June • Summer SJ & Style Qualifier @ Earith - Sunday 25th June • Summer Dressage & Riding Test @ Earith - Saturday 15th July

Club Training & Social Events

This month has been really busy and the weather has held for every event that we have run. Horses are beginning to look good in their new summer coats, the birds have retrieved every horse hair from the ground to build their nests. The swallows are back, I do enjoy their antics. It is amazing they have flown all the way back from Africa to their same nests. I must have most of them in the eaves of my stables as I have 12 nests and they are building more!!!!!!!!!!! I don't mind but I wish they were not so dirty and cleaned up after themselves before they emigrate again. The first flat work session on 8th April got off to a slow start but all riders that took part thoroughly enjoyed themselves and definitely will, and have, booked in again. Thank you, Di, for giving up your Saturday afternoon for us. I cannot stress enough the importance of this basic training, It is only boring if you do not understand what you are asking of the horse and how to attain it, and training sessions are the place to learn and have fun also. Show jumping on the following Saturday, 15th April with Tom Frey at our new venue of Manor Farm Equestrian Centre at Caldecott, and very smart it is too. I am sure this venue is going to be a favourite as there is plenty of parking, hard and grass, plenty of warm up areas, large school and, of course, Tom's expertise. We had the young and the old at these first sessions, Finley Wootton aged 10 with his clever little mare, Jenny (love the pics in the Horse and Hound Finley) and I dare not say it the other end of the scale, our Chairman Tony Neal with his rather large 5-year-old. Jacob was obviously excited to be there judging the way the lorry was rocking on his arrival! I am pleased to say we were inundated with riders at the first cross country training session at Boughton Park on 22 April. So much so we had to use 2 instructors. Di and Jo, many thanks for your hard work. Sorry I couldn't provide you with a G and T afterwards, had to make do with tea. There is one person who I feel needs our thanks 10-fold. Tony, our Chairman and course builder was there on the day, creosoting fences, and repairing and moving others. Without his unstinting work on this course we could not run our events there. Many of you will not realise that Tony is busy building fences and fillers, etc., over many hours throughout the week at his yard and then transporting them ready for training and the hunter trials. So, a big thank you must go to him. The day itself was lovely and sunny, all ran well and to time. Just one small fall, and everyone came back smiling. On our social side, we had a demo at Alley Farm on Sunday 16th April. Those who didn't come missed a treat, not only was this a free event, but it was put on by our own members and instructors. The feedback afterwards was fab and our next flat work/schooling session was over filled during the next few days. Jane Vargerson was our expert for the afternoon with Peter Hales instructing. Jane showing how it should be done. Jane herself competes in all disciplines and is always a team member. Then we had 4 lovely guinea pigs. These 4 were so different, in age, shape and size and after an hour of informative instruction the difference was so clearly seen and everyone understood why they were adjusting their way of riding and position to achievement. A big thank you to all who took part, not forgetting the ladies who baked scrummy cakes for us all.

Page 6: NEWSLETTER - RFRC · NEWSLETTER May 2017 Chairman’s Chat N Meanwhile, you have all been very busy and doing well. So well done. We very exciting. Let us hope it is a beautiful day

And so on to forthcoming events: Saturday 6th May, flatwork/dressage training at Alley Farm, Lowick, instructor is Peter Hales. Unfortunately, this afternoon is fully booked but I do keep a cancellation list and I can also book in for future month's sessions. Saturday 13th May cross country training at Boughton Park. We have 2 instructors on this day, Adam Reed and Jo Rhodes. Unfortunately, again, fully booked. Today will be very busy so those of you coming for training only please note, parking will be on the right-hand side of the entrance field. Anyone coming for course walking later in the day will park to the left. Two other notes: Please declare upon arrival, it doesn't help me to have to run around to see if you have arrived before putting you in your group. Secondly, do not muck out your horsebox on the field. We are on land occupied by sheep with new lambs, disease or infections are the last thing we want. Sunday 14th May Hunter Trial Boughton Park Sunday 21 May Rockingham International Horse Trials Saturday 27 May show jump training at Manor Farm Caldecott near Rushden. Tom Fray is our instructor. DEMO 28TH MAY at 2 PM AT MEDBOURN, LEICESTERSHIRE WITH PETER HALES. This is to be THE PROGESSION OF TRAINING AND EXERCISES. Everyone is welcome, members and friends, there is no charge. We are aiming to promote and educate for the wellbeing, mentally and physically, of the horse’s life from baby to full adulthood. Peter will show: 1. A 2-year-old, how to work in hand, lunge, introduce tack, possible sit. 2. A 7-year-old showing some progressive training movements. 3. A 9-year-old showing how you can train a horse to do a specific movement. 4. A 12-year-old, different exercises and how to develop the horse’s ability, jumping and flying changes. You can ask any questions at any stage of the demo and will be encouraged to do so. This will be a very informal afternoon, with our usual tasty homemade cakes and mug of tea. The Venue Peters home, White Rose Stud, Main Street, Medbourn, Leicestershire, LE16 8DT. It will be signposted RFRC and is very easy to find from the A14.

For times, extra dates, directions, queries or anything to do with Training PLEASE RING HAZEL on 01832 733242 or 07799447511. Twywell Festival Weekend - Sunday 11 June On a personal note, and to plug my village Festival, I will be running a very low level dressage day at Twywell. Four classes, 2 intro and 2 prelim., This really is a 'have a go’ day. You don't need to have the correct attire just clean and tidy and you can use your normal tack, doesn't have to be a snaffle. Hopefully we will have some dressage to music or quadrille just to show how much fun it can be. The rosettes etc., are kindly being sponsored by Rockingham Forest Riding Club. Please ring me if you are interested, schedules are in the process of being produced and will be available shortly. Intro A and B, and Prelim 7 and 12. Ring for times, pay on the day at £8 per class.

Rockingham Forest Riding Club is run by a committee of volunteers.

We run competitions to raise funds in order to subsidise the training and social events we provide. We know you are all busy, but these events are being organised for you and WE REALLY DO NEED YOU so PLEASE find a bit of time to give the faithful few some help.

Whenever we organize an event, we always need lots of helpers.

We are dependent on our parents, friends and connections to provide that help as without it the events simply cannot happen. We ask that each member’s family/friends volunteer to help at a minimum of one event each year. we do keep a list of those who have helped!!

The more people who volunteer as helpers, the less the onus falls on the faithful few, so please put your name forward to help in some capacity. Don’t underestimate yourself– we desperately need people to do a wide range of jobs and you don’t need to be an expert – you just need to be willing!

We will give you any instruction/training you may need so don’t worry if you think you haven’t a clue – we can help! Quite apart from anything else, helping at events is good fun, sociable and gets you away from the daily humdrum for a while!

The following gives you an idea of the sort of help we need: -

Catering, Fence Judging, Stewarding, tack checking, Lorry park stewards, Score collectors, Scorers, Show-jumping poll pickers, putting up show-jumps and taking them down at the end of the day, flagging cross-country course, Maintenance of equipment, Storage and transport of equipment, Dressage writers, Taking round refreshments etc. etc. etc.

We often need some professional help at our events, i.e. doctor, vet, farriery, paramedic, etc. so again, please let us know if you would be prepared to help in a professional capacity. Thank you. Please contact Kelly Bellham Email :[email protected] Phone/Text:07867424022

Book Corner

The longer evenings and warmer weather are proving to be a great blessing, especially in the garden. Having loved the drier weather and ground, we could now do with some rain! I am constantly watering the new plants in the garden and Polly is constantly trying to help!! Her latest wheeze is as I put rose feed around the plants (in the form of pellets), she is busy looking for them and eating them herself. I just can’t win. Now I really have had to teach her not to eat the blue pellets as they are intended for the slugs who love to eat Hosta’s. So far so good. So, not much time for reading at present but my next book will be Anthony Horowitz’s ‘Magpie Murders’. I hope I like it. Happy riding everyone. Jenny

Can any of you recommend a book? If so, please let me know and I will include it in a future Newsletter. Just include title, author and publisher plus a short critique.
