Please accept our annual communication of musical goodwill to you reflecting the activities of our Cameron University Music Department during the past academic year—2012/2013. This 2013 Newsletter represents a collection of current activities, the achievements of our alumni who have responded to our 2012 Newsletter and an updated and continued listing of our Cameron University Music Alumni and Faculty—including some of our Music Faculty’s activities this past year. We want to keep you informed about our music activities and events, and we also want you each to feel welcome to attend them in the future. The Cameron Music Department has been quite active in the past academic year, and I hope you were able to either attend or feel connected with some of these outstanding performances. Having completed more than five full academic years since my appointment as Chair of the Department of Music at Cameron University, I am delighted either to correspond with many of you or to email you with our department’s renewed vision of collective ownership, opportunity, and outreach. As a Music Department, we also embrace our fourfold University Mission which is: 1. to provide a diverse and dynamic student body access to quality educational opportunities; 2. to foster a student-centered academic environment that combines innovative classroom teaching with experiential learning; 3. to prepare students for professional success, responsible citizenship, life-long learning, and meaningful contributions to a rapidly changing world; and 4. to be a driving force in the cultural life and economic development of the region. Toward the achievement of these collective vision, goals and mission, Cameron’s academic motto reflects our department’s dynamic interest and investment in each student through “Every Student, Every Story.” This academic motto was coined under our Cameron President Cynthia Ross who announced her retirement effective June 30, 2013. Our new Cameron President will be Dr. John McArthur, who has been the Provost at Cameron University. Summertime is an opportunity for each of us to reflect upon the past year’s achievements and to renew our connections with our friends, constituents and alumni, and we want all of you to be fully aware of our music activities here at Cameron. To that end, we continue to publish this Cameron University Music Department Newsletter once a year (during the summer) and also have it posted on our music department webpage (www.cameron.edu which can be accessed through Cameron University’s webpage). If you graduated from Cameron and studied music here, you are one of our partners in ownership of our music program at Cameron. If you live close to us, we want you to feel welcome either to attend or to participate in our university or community ensembles. Even if you don’t live close to us now, we want to hear from you and know what you’re doing at the present time. We have heard from many of you, but please take the time to mail back to us an enclosed information card which will provide us an update on your activities! You will find in this Newsletter condensed input of what we have received from many of you during the past year. Greetings from the  Cameron University  Music Department! 

 

Please accept our annual communication of musical goodwill to you reflecting the activities of our Cameron University Music Department during the past academic year—2012/2013. This 2013 Newsletter represents a collection of current activities, the achievements of our alumni who have responded to our 2012 Newsletter and an updated and

We want to keep you informed about our music activities and events, and we also want you each to feel welcome to attend them in the future. Summary of Concerts and Activities and

Department Faculty Updates Fall 2012

During the Fall, 2012,  semester, the Cameron University 

Music  Department  hosted  over  thirty  concerts  and 

recitals. At the beginning of each semester, it has become a 

tradition  to  have  a  Cameron  Music  Advisory  Board 

meeting which permits music  educators  and  local music 

constituents to meet with the Cameron music faculty  in a 

casual setting. Among the topics covered are the schedules 

of  both  Cameron’s  music  events  as  well  as  area  choir, 

band, orchestra and piano recitals. At this particular event 

in August, 2012, we introduced two temporary professors 

for 2012/13 who were Dr. John Cornish (who taught choir, 

vocal diction, voice lessons and opera workshop) and Dr. 

Michael Compton  (who  taught applied woodwinds,  jazz 

ensemble, conducting and jazz improvisation).

Chair  and  Professor  of 

Music  at  Cameron 

University  presented  a 

faculty piano  recital on 

Thursday,  August  30, 

2012,  at  the  Cameron 

University Theatre. The 

recital  featured  the piano music of  J. S. Bach  (French Suite 

No. 5 in G major), Robert  Schumann  (Waldszenen), Mozart 

(Sonata  in A major),  Chopin  (Mazurka  in  a minor),  Franz 

Liszt (Hungarian Rhapsody No. 15).  On October 2, 2012, Dr. 

Whang  performed  in  combined  concert with Mr. David 

Kim,  violinist  (Concertmaster  of  the  Philadelphia 

Symphony  Orchestra)  performing  Mozart’s  Sonata  for 

Piano  and Violin  in  e minor,  Brahms’  Sonata  for Piano  and 

Violin  in d minor,  Fritz  Kreisler’s  Liebeslied,  and  Pablo  de 

Sarasate’s arrangement of the Carmen Fantasy (from Bizet’s 

opera).  Cameron  University  student  Amanda  Morales 

presented  her  senior  piano  recital  on  September  28. 

Amanda is a piano student of Dr. Thomas Labe.  Jiha Choi 

presented her senior piano recital on November 11. Jiha is 

a piano student of Dr. Hyunsoon Whang.   

On  October  6, Dr. Roy Couch  presented 

a  Faculty  Tuba  Recital  and  was 

accompanied  on  piano  by  Yiuka Chan‐

Spannagel.  Dr.  Couch’s  repertoire 

reflected works  or  transcriptions  by  the 

following  composers: Robert  Schumann, 

Elizabeth  Raum,  Tchaikovsky,  Martin 

Ellerby and Abreu.  

 

The Cameron University Civic Symphony, conducted by 

Kirsten Underwood, performed a Fall concert on Tuesday, 

October 9, and included the following repertoire: Mozart’s 

Eine Kleine Nachtmusik,  Leroy  Anderson’s  Jazz  Pizzacato, 

Brett  Ligon’s  Bossa Verde,  and  Gustav  Holst’s  St. Paul’s 

Suite.   

The  Cameron/Lawton  Community  Band,  conducted  by 

CU Department Chair Dr. Jim Lambert, performed a full‐

length concert on October 14th. Included in their Fall, 2012, 

programming  were  National  Emblem  by  E.  E.  Bagley, 

Overture A  La Russe  by  Warren 

Barker,  Heritage  of  Freedom  by 

James  Curnow,  Teddy  Trombone 

by Henry  Fillmore, I’ve Made My 

Plans  for  the  Summer  by  John 

Philip  Sousa,  I’ve Got Rhythm  by 

George  and  Ira  Gershwin 

arranged  by  Ken  Dye,  Armed 

Forces  Salute  arranged  by  Bob 

Lowden,  and  Stars  and  Stripes 

Forever  by  John  Philip  Sousa. 

This  community  concert  band 

engaged  fifty  area  performing 

woodwind, brass and percussion 

performers.  

Cameron University Concert Choir,  conducted by  John 

Cornish,  and  the  Cameron  University  Centennial 

Singers,  conducted  by  Doris  Lambert,  presented  a 

combined concert on October 16th which  included choral 

works by Dan Forrest, Franz Schubert, William Byrd, and 

Gabriel  Faure.  The  Centennial  Singers  performed 

compositions  by  Heyman/Young,  Michele  Wier,  Leon 

Russell and Alex Phan.   

Student  members  of  the  Fall,  2012,  Cameron  Opera 

Workshop presented scenes from Mozart’s Comic Operas 

under  the  direction  of  John  Cornish  on  October  26. 

Student  vocalists  included  Jordan  Brickhouse,  Alyssa 

Yates,  Jereme  Cobb,  Mark  Deyesso,  Jose  Rodriguez,

Jennifer Nixon, Peter Macias, and Melissa Delgado. This 

event  was  co‐sponsored  by  a  generous  grant  from  the 

Southwest Oklahoma Opera Guild  and  included scenes 

from Cosi fan tutte, Le Nozze di Figaro, and Don Giovanni.  

The October music  concerts  continued  in  the Fall, 2012, 

semester with a  full‐length performance by  the members 

of  the  Cameron  University  Percussion  Ensemble  on 

October 30. Featured on the Fall, 2012, CUPE concert were 

senior  Quinton  Williams  as  marimba  soloist  on  Jack 

Jenny’s  Pursuit—as  well  as  additional  compositions  by 

Lynn Glassock,  Jared Spears, Warren Benson, Mark Ford 

and  Pat  Metheny.  Student  percussionists  included: 

Quinton  Williams,  Andy  Vitense,  Trent  Ford,  Cody 

Ressell,  Lilah 

Gilmore, Tyler 

Reeves, 

Kendall  Jones, 

Marquis 

Williams,  and 

Dylan 

Shadoan.  The 

members of the 

CU Percussion Ensemble, conducted by Dr. Jim Lambert, 

also provided  a performance  of  the Cameron University 

Drumline—which also performed for basketball games and 

special  occasions  at  Cameron  University.  The  CU  Pan 

Express  also  performed  on  this  concert.  Later,  on 

November 10, Mr. Quinton Williams presented his junior 

percussion recital featuring compositions by Tanaka, John 

Beck, William Kraft, Mark Ford, and Lalo Davila. Quinton 

is a percussion student of Dr. Jim Lambert.  

On  November  1,  Blackberry  Bushes  Stringband  was 

featured  as  guest  performers  for  the  2012  Country/Jazz 

Fusion  concert—with  the  Cameron  University  Jazz 

Ensemble directed by Temporary Assistant Professor, Dr. 

Michael  Compton.  The  Cameron/Lawton  Community 

Jazz  Ensemble  also  performed  on  this  outstanding  jazz 

event.  Included  on  this  Country/Jazz  Fusion  were 

compositions  by  Don 

Menza, Antonio Carlos 

Jobim,  Gene  Puerling, 

Hoagy  Carmichael, 

and  Randy  Brecker. 

This  event  was 

generously  funded  by 

the Cameron  Lectures 

and Concerts Series.  

 

On November 

13, Dr. Michael 

Compton 

presented his 

woodwind 

ensemble 

students 

featuring the 

Flute Choir, the Clarinet Choir, and the Saxophone 

Ensemble in shared concert. Flute students included: 

Kirstie Bridges, Melissa Delgado, Savannah Freeman, 

and Diane Pihulic. Clarinet performers included: Kelsey 

Alden‐Cox, Mariama Abramson, Brittany Curtis, and 

Jasmine Schultz. Saxophone students included:  

Todd Stuart, 

Irmtraud Bryant, 

Leslie Carberry, 

Prezell Duckett, 

and Drake Parker.   

 

 

Cameron  University  adjunct  music  instructor  Kristina 

Henckel was featured in a piano recital on November 15, 

2012,  in  McCutcheon  Recital  Hall.  Among  her 

compositions  performed  included  Janacek’s  In  the Mists, 

Beethoven’s  32  Variations  in  c  minor,  Smetana’s  Concert 

Etude  (On  the  Seashore)  and  Chopin’s  Sonata  in  b minor. 

Kristina  Henckel  is  the  regular  accompanist  for  the 

Cameron  University  Centennial  Singers  and  earned  her 

Master  of Music  degree  from  the  Prague  Conservatory. 

She  completed  her  advanced  music  studies  at  the 

University of Oklahoma and is ABD.  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The  Cameron  University Guitar  Ensemble  presented  a 

Chamber  Music  recital  on  December  1  at  McCutcheon 

Recital Hall which featured four Cameron guitar students 

from  the  studio  of  Mrs.  Kirsten  Underwood.  These 

students were: Ashim Bohara, Russell Caballero, Daren 

Powell,  and  Shane  Rutherford.  Among  the  repertoire 

performed  were  compositions  by  Agustin  Barrios 

Mangore, Mozart, Scheidt, and Grieg.

The Cameron University Concert Band presented its Fall 

semester  concert  on  December  4  in  the  Cameron 

University Theatre. The CU Concert Band was conducted 

by Dr. Roy Couch  and  its  repertoire  included Triumphal 

Ode by Howard Hanson,  The Echo Never Fades  by David 

Gillingham, Festal Scenes by Yashuhide Ito, Symphony No. 4 

by  Boysen,  Glenbury  Grove  by  Giroux,  and  Festivo  by 

Gregson. 

The Cameron University Concert Choir and the 

Cameron Centennial Singers were presented in a 

December 6th combined concert which was highlighted by 

holiday music from the Concert Choir including John 

Rutter’s Magnificat, Dan Forrest’s The First Noel and Arise 

Shine. The Centennial Singers performed Mark Hayes’ 

Sounds of the Season, Alfred Burt’s Some Children See Him, 

Mel Torme’s The Christmas Song, and Mark Hayes’ Jesus, 

Oh What a Wonderful Child. John Cornish conducted the 

Cameron Concert Choir (accompanied on piano by Yiuka 

Chan Spannagel), 

and Doris Lambert 

conducted the 

Cameron 

Centennial Singers 

(accompanied on 

piano by Kristina

The  Cameron  University Guitar  Ensemble  presented  a

Recital Hall which featured six 

Cameron guitar  students  from 

the  studio  of  Mrs.  Kirsten 

Underwood.  These  students 

were:  Ashim  Bohara,  Russell

Powell,  Shane Rutherford  and 

Matthew  Stringfellow. Among 

the repertoire performed were: 

Tant  que  vivrai  by  Sermisy, 

Ferando  Sor’s  Estudio  No.  2, 

Antonio  Lauro’s  Vals 

Venezolano,  and  Jaime 

Zenamon’s Impressionen.  

On Saturday, December 8, The Lawton Schubert Music 

Club, Fort Sillʹs New Post Chapel, and the Cameron 

University/Lawton Civic Chorus presented the 70th 

Annual concert of Handelʹs MESSIAH at the McMahon 

Auditorium, located in Elmer Thomas Park, Lawton. The 

100‐voice chorus and professional orchestra were

During  the  Spring,  2013,  semester,  the  Cameron 

University Music Department  also  featured  a number  of 

outstanding  music  concerts  and  recitals.  The  semester 

started with  a Music Advisory Board meeting with  area 

music educators and members of the Cameron University 

music  faculty.  Our  guest  speaker was  retired  Cameron 

University Professor, Dr. George Smith, who challenged 

those present with timeless gems of advice on the value of 

music  at  all  ages. A  healthy  exchange  of  ideas  and  the 

sharing  of  calendared  events  also  highlighted  this 

meeting.   

Dr. Hyunsoon Whang was featured at the CU@SC Music 

Series at Duncan’s Simmons Center on Friday, February 1, 

2013.   Her solo piano recital  included:  Impromptu in G‐flat 

major by  Franz  Schubert, Beethoven’s  7 variations on “God 

Save the king”, Debussy’s Estampes,  and  several  selections 

from Chopin  including  his Nocturnes in C‐sharp minor, D‐

flat Major,  and  his waltzes in D‐flat major, A‐flat major  and 

the Grand Waltz in A‐flat Major. This event was also a part 

of  the  Cameron  student  art  exhibit  opening  at  the 

Simmons Center.   

Dr.  Greg  Hoepfner,  Cameron  composition  professor, 

presented  the  premiere  production  of  his  own 

composition  (a  one‐act  musical)  entitled  The  Juries,  on 

February  12.  This  comic  production  included  current 

Cameron  students,  Cameron  graduates  and  area 

Lawtonians  including:  Justin  Dipprey,  Johnny  Horn, 

Martha McCartney, Janice Bear, Brandon Landers, Holly 

Evans, Jarod Grice, Leah Mazur, Jennifer Nixon, Melissa 

Delgado, Alex Huff, Mark Deyesso  and Kelsey  Logan. 

The Juries was accompanied by Yiuka Chan‐Spannagel on 

piano.   

On  February  19,  the  Cameron  University  Lectures  and 

Concerts  Series  co‐sponsored  the  annual  Cameron 

University  New  Music  Festival  featuring  the  music  of 

Trio Tulsa: Maureen O’Boyle, violin, Diane Bucchianeri, 

cello,  and  Roger  Price,  piano.  Cameron  resident 

composer, Dr. Greg Hoepfner, coordinated this concert.   

Dr.    Hyunsoon Whang was  featured  on  a Gifted  and 

Talented  presentation  on  February  22  for  the  Lawton 

Public  Schools‐‐which  she  presented  at  Cameronʹs 

McCutcheon Recital Hall on which  she performed music 

reflecting  her  selected  theme  of  “For  the  Love  of  Our 

Planet.”  Included  were  compositions  by  Schumann, 

Chopin, Debussy, Rachmaninoff and Liszt. 

The Cameron University Concert Choir and the Cameron 

Centennial Singers presented a February 26th concert 

which featured the Concert Choir performing Byrd’s Sing 

Joyfully and Elgar’s 

Scenes from the Bavarian 

Highlands. Among the 

Centennial Singersʹ 

repertoire included 

Deke Sharon’s 

arrangement of Axel F, 

John Purifoy’s 

Shenandoah, Eckert’s 

arrangement of 

Menescal’s Telephone 

Song, Anders and

Choir, conducted by 

Lisa Cullison, was a guest choral ensemble with the 

Cameron Concert Choir on this concert. Dr. John Cornish 

conducted the Concert Choir, and Mrs. Doris Lambert 

conducted the Centennial Singers. Tom Willoughby 

accompanied the Cameron Concert Choir, and Kristina 

Henckel accompanied the Centennial Singers. Dr. 

Michael Compton was guest jazz saxophonist with the 

Centennial Singers.  

On February 28th    the Cameron University  Jazz  Festival 

featured  guest  saxophone  performer, Dr. Michael Cox, 

who  is  a  Cameron  University  alumnus  and  currently 

teaches  saxophone  at  Capital University  in  Columbus, 

Ohio.  This  event  was  also  sponsored  by  the  Cameron 

Lectures and Concerts Series and  included performances 

by  the  Cameron  University  Jazz  Ensemble  and  the 

Cameron/Lawton  Community  Jazz  Ensemble—both 

conducted by Dr. Michael Compton.

On  March  1,  the  Cameron 

University  Lectures  and  Concerts 

Series  presented  Three  Pianists 

Concert  featuring  Thomas  Labe, 

Hyunsoon Whang, and guest Jerry 

Wong—piano  professor  at  Kent 

State University, Ohio. Included on 

this  special  combined  recital were 

dynamic  piano  works  by  Franck, 

Liszt,  Schubert,  Scriabin,  Saint‐

Saens and Rachmaninoff. 

 

The  Cameron/Lawton  Community  Band  and  the 

Cameron/Lawton  Civic  Chorale  presented  a  combined 

concert  in  University  Theatre  on  Sunday,  March  3. 

Conducted by Doris Lambert, the C/L Civic Chorale was 

accompanied  on  piano  by  Kristina  Henckel.  Their 

program  consisted  of  the  Schubert  Mass  in  G.  The 

Cameron/Lawton  Community  Band,  conducted  by  Dr. 

Jim  Lambert,    performed  Fillmore’s    136th  USA  Field 

Artillery March,  Jacob’s Suite  in Bb,  Alfred  Reed’s  Golden 

Year,  and  Karrick’s  Exuberance.  The  concert  concluded 

with  a  combined  presentation  of    Irving Berlin’s America, 

featuring  a  medley  of  Berlin  hits  including  There’s No 

Business  Like  Show  Business,  Alexander’s  Ragtime  Band, 

Puttin’ on the Ritz, Blue Skies, Always and God Bless America! 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The  Cameron  Civic  Symphony 

conducted  by  Dr.  Kirsten 

Underwood  presented  a  concert  in 

McCutcheon Recital Hall on March 5. 

Among  the  composers  represented 

on  this  concert  were  Hassler,  Bach, 

Mozart,  Grainger,  Henry  Mancini, 

and Billy Strayhorn. Featured soloists 

were  Kathy  Liticker  and  Kevin 

Liticker,  violinists,  and  Kathryn 

Patterson, piano.  

The  Cameron  University  Opera  Workshop  under  the 

direction and piano accompaniment of Dr.  John Cornish 

presented  an abridged version of Mozart’s The Marriage of 

Figaro.    This  production  (on  March  7)  was  generously 

sponsored by the Southwest Oklahoma Opera Guild and 

included Cameron music students: Peter Macias, Jennifer 

Nixon, Melissa Delgado, Jamie Hatcher, Mark Deyesso, 

Jose  Rodriguez,  Alyssa  Yates,  Chris  Beckett,  Thomas 

Hudson, and Alyson Hays.  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

On  March  12  Cameron  senior 

soprano  Melissa  Delgado 

presented  her  Senior  Recital. 

Melissa was  accompanied on  the 

piano by Yiuka Chan‐Spannagel. 

She is a voice student of Dr. Greg 

Hoepfner  (and  formerly  of 

retired Cameron  voice  professor, 

Dr.  Jan Logan). Among Melissa’s 

repertoire  included:  Schubert’s 

selections  from  Lied  der Mignon; 

Vaughn‐Williams’  Four  Last 

Songs;  Rossini’s  Una voce poco va; 

Faure’s  Reve  d’amour;  and 

Rossini’s Non piu mesta.  

 

The Cameron University Concert 

Band  under  the  direction  of  Dr. 

Roy  Couch  presented  its  Spring 

concert  on March  14.  The  Cache 

High  School  Concert  Band,  Ben 

Silber,  conductor,  was  a  guest 

performance  ensemble  on  this 

concert.  Included on  the Cameron 

Concert  Band  repertoire  were 

Grainger’s  Irish Tune  from County 

Derry, Persichetti’s Pageant, Pann’s 

Hold  This  Boy  and  Listen,  and 

Alfred Reed’s El Camino Real.

The Cameron University Percussion Ensemble, conduct‐

Mr. Simon’s guest performance was sponsored by the CU 

Lectures and Concerts series. Featured on this concert was

Dimples),  and  David

Drumset).  Featured  stu‐

Trenton  Ford,  Andy  Vitense,  Lilah  Gilmore,  Marquis 

Williams, Tyler Reeves, Kendall  Jones, Dylan Shadoan, 

and  Jake Downing. The Pan Express portion of this con‐

cert  was  repeated  at  the  Duncan’s  Simmons  Center 

(CU@SC)  on  Friday, March  29,  and an abridged  concert 

by  the Cameron  Percussion  Ensemble was presented  at 

the 2013 Oklahoma Percussion Festival at Jenks, Oklaho‐

ma, on Saturday, April 6.

Recital at the Simmons Cen‐

ter  in  Duncan,  Oklahoma. 

Included  on  this  Showcase 

Recital were student pianists 

Jiha Choi, Ike Chan, Kassan‐

dra  Duran  and  Kathryn 

Patterson.  String  performers 

included  guitarists  Ashim 

Bohara,  Shane  Rutherford 

and Anastasia Rave—as well 

as  cellist  Spenser  Jones.  Lorenzo  Diaz  performed  on 

trumpet. Members  of  the  Centennial  Singers  performed 

including Jordan Brickhouse, Jessica Fernandez, Jennifer 

Nixon, Jamie Hatcher, Alyson Hays, Alyssa Yates, Peter 

Macias,  Jose Rodriguez and Brad Wolf. Members of  the 

Cameron University Pan Express  (the official  steel drum 

ensemble  of Cameron University)  concluded  this  special 

concert. Faculty members participating  included Dr.  Jim 

Lambert, Dr. John Cornish, Dr. Kirsten Underwood, Dr. 

Hyunsson Whang, Doris Lambert and Kristina Henckel.   

The  Cameron  University  Guitar  Ensemble  directed  by 

Dr. Kirsten Underwood, presented  its Spring Concert  in 

McCutcheon Recital Hall on April 4. The Cameron Guitar 

Ensemble  included  Ashim  Bohara,  Shane  Rutherford, 

and Anastasia Rave.    

On Tuesday, April 9, Cameron University piano students 

(from  the  studios  of  both  Dr. 

Hyunsoon  Whang  and  Dr. 

Thomas Labé) presented a piano 

recital  entitle  “An  Evening  of 

French  Piano  Duets”  on  which 

five piano majors and one piano 

alumna (Yiuka Chan Spannagel) 

performed  piano  four‐hands  lit‐

erature  by  Faure,  Bizet  and 

Ravel.  Included  on  this  piano 

concert  were  Cameron  students 

Jiha  Choi,  Amanda  Morales,  Kassandra  Duran,  Ike 

Chan, and Kathryn Patterson.

Jackson from New York City 

in solo recital in McCutcheon 

Recital Hall on April  15. Ms. 

Jackson was accompanied on

Martinu.

On  April  25  the  Cameron  University  Concert  Band, 

conducted by Dr. Roy Couch, and the Fort Sill 77th Army 

Band,  Matthew  David,  conductor,  were  presented  in 

combined concert. Among the repertoire performed in this 

annual  combined  concert  band  concert  were  Golden 

Festival Overture by  James  Barnes,  The Vanished Army  by 

Kenneth  Alford,  Ecstatic  Fanfare  by  Steven  Bryant,  Six 

Studies by Vaughn‐Williams  (arranged by M. David), The 

Unknown Soldier by Hilliard, and Ticheli’s Symphony No. 2.  

 

Over  50  Cameron  University  Music  Students  were 

featured  in  weekly  studio,  area  and  departmental 

recitals—which  occurred  each  Friday  at  11 AM  during 

our Music 1000 Recital Hour.

1971—Janet Smith. Janet is still teaching voice and direct‐

ing the Opera Theatre at California State University—

Fullerton. She also has a private voice studio in Tustin,

1980—Laura Collins. Laura received national certification 

from  the  Organization  of  American  Kodaly  Educators 

through the University of Oklahoma in 2011. Laura serves 

as  soloist  at  the First Church of Christ  Scientist  in Tulsa 

and  will  continue  teaching  vocal  music  (grades  pre‐K 

through 6) for the Tulsa Public Schools (this is Laura’s 32nd 

year of teaching in the Tulsa Public Schools). Laura main‐

1980—Dr. Scott Deal.  Dr. Scott Deal is Professor of Music

1980—Dr. Robert Stewart teaches at New Orleans Baptist

1980—Dr.  Kathy  Scherler.  Dr.  Kathy  Scherler  has  been 

named Assistant Professor of Music at Cameron Universi‐

ty starting the Fall, 2013, semester. Kathy will be conduct‐

ing  the  Cameron  University  Concert  Choir,  teaching 

Opera Workshop, private voice lessons, vocal diction, and 

other  assigned  duties. Kathy  earned  her  Ph.D.  from  the

1981—Mark Dalton. Mark resides in Plano, Texas, and  is 

principal of the Hebron 9th Grade Center in Carrollton. His

for Relyco  Printing  and  Payment  Solutions.  John  can  be

1991—Tim DeWitt. Tim lives in Elk City, Oklahoma, and 

can be reached via email at [email protected] Tim spent 

three years  in Hobart, Oklahoma, and seventeen years at 

Elk City, Oklahoma. He has soloed with Benny Goodman, 

Count Basie, and he has given lessons to J. J. Johnson, Ste‐

ve Trey  and Christian Lindberg. Tim  is  president  of  the 

Shortgrass Directors Association  and  is  a  part‐time  golf 

pro at the Elk City Country Club. 

 

1991—Donna Emerson Schultz. Donna is the band direc‐

tor  at  Snyder  (Oklahoma) High  School—but with  some 

small  changes.  She  is  “head  director,”  also  in  charge  of 

beginning band and the high school band. Donna also as‐

sists her husband, Greg, with the 6th‐7th grade band. Greg 

assists  her with  the  beginners  and  the  high  school  band 

program. Donna  also  teaches music  to pre‐K  through  4th 

grade.  In addition  to Donna’s band director assignments 

at Snyder,  she  is  the  junior high  academic  coach! Donna

2002—Eugene Holmes.  Eugene Holmes  lives  in Wilson, 

North  Carolina.  He  is  a  retired  U.  S.  Army  bandsman

2009—Sarah Goedicke.  Sarah  lives  in Phoenix, Arizona,
