Growing a Supportive Community of Active Learners
Chalcot Lodge Commitment to Child Safety
Chalcot Lodge Primary School is committed to safety and wellbeing of all children and young people. This will be the
primary focus of our care and decision-making. Chalcot Lodge Primary School has zero tolerance for child abuse.
Chalcot Lodge Primary School is committed to providing a child safe environment where children and young people are
safe and feel safe, and their voices are heard about decisions that affect their lives. Particular attention will be paid to the
cultural safety of Aboriginal children and children from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds, as well as
the safety of children with a disability.
Every person involved at Chalcot Lodge Primary School has a responsibility to understand the important and specific role
he/she plays individually and collectively to ensure that the wellbeing and safety of all children and young people is at
the forefront of all they do and every decision they make.
Mothers’ Day Stall
A reminder that Mothers’ Day is on Sunday 12th May. Our Parent Club will be holding their
annual Mothers’ Day Stall on Thursday 9th May with gifts ranging from 50c to $5. Children
love to give something special to their Mum, so please support this activity. Many thanks to
the Parent Club for organising the stall.
Timetable for NAPLAN Testing
Just a reminder that the Department of Education NAPLAN testing commences in two weeks’ time for
Year 3 and 5 students across Australia. An informational letter was sent home to parents earlier this
week.
School Activity Payments
School Council would like to remind parents/guardians that payments for school organised activities
(whether it be for an excursion, invisit or parent club activity) must be paid by the due date in order to
facilitate smooth organisation of the event and to ensure that correct financial processes are followed.
Payment through Compass is the school’s preferred method of payment, parents/guardians are able
contact the office to make alternative arrangements. Please note that no late payments for school
activities will be accepted through the office.
Some Helpful Tips to Help Prevent Head Lice
We must be vigilant in our approach to preventing head lice. Here are some helpful tips.
Always check your children weekly and act immediately if you see them scratching (remember
not all children who scratch have lice, but if they are scratching they may well be infected)
Use protective sprays, shampoos and conditioners to reduce the risk of infestation
If possible, keep hair short and keep long hair tied up. Remember lice do not fly or jump, they can
only be passed on through physical contact.
Use hair gel, it can help
Make sure children and friends do not share hair brushes, hat, towels, scrunchies etc.
Please inform the school immediately of any cases of Chicken Pox
It is extremely important that the school is notified immediately if there are any cases of Chicken Pox.
Symptoms of chickenpox
The symptoms of chickenpox include:
low-grade fever
general discomfort, illness or lack of wellbeing (malaise)
intensely itchy skin rash – appears as small blisters surrounded by irregularly-shaped patches of
inflamed skin known as ‘dew drop on a rose petal’ (blisters first form on the body and later on the
head and limbs and the blisters usually burst and develop crusts after about five days)
ulcers – may develop in certain areas,
High-risk groups for chickenpox
People at increased risk of catching or having complications from chickenpox include:
newborn babies – there is an increased risk of severe illness in the first 28 days of life
pregnant women – who have not had chickenpox or been immunised for chickenpox
people who have a weakened immune system – people with leukaemia or Hodgkin’s disease, or
those taking immunosuppressive medications, are at risk of longer and more serious illness

Coughs, Colds and Asthma
Coughs, colds and the flu are one of the most common triggers of asthma. The common cold is caused by
an upper respiratory tract infection and is a common illness for children and adults in Australia. As we
approach the colder months, here are some tips to keep in mind to prevent and reduce the spread of
coughs, colds and the flu:
Avoid coughing and sneezing on or near others and wash your hands thoroughly to prevent the
spread of disease.
If your child is not feeling well, it is recommended that they stay home and rest, to reduce the
spread of infections and to speed up their recovery process.
Everyone should have the annual flu vaccination to ensure they are protected from this disease.
You or your child may be eligible for the free flu vaccination. Details about who is eligible can be
found here and can also be determined by your doctor.
Prior to purchasing any medications or herbal and natural remedies’, you should seek the advice
of your doctor or pharmacist as some medications can react with asthma medications. Such as
Aspirin, Ibuprofen/Naproxen (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications), Beta Blockers tablet
and eye drops (used for high blood pressure and glaucoma), and ACE inhibitors (used to control
blood pressure).
The Asthma Foundation of Australia is funded by the Federal Department of Health to provide free
asthma education sessions to groups of parents and carers. These sessions can take place at the school or
at a location of your choice. The session runs for approximately one hour and covers:
Asthma triggers
Signs and symptoms
Asthma action plans
Asthma medication
Asthma First Aid
If you are interested in attending a parent and carer asthma information session, please contact The
Asthma Foundation of Australia to arrange a session on 1800-ASTHMA.
Stay warm this winter!
