December at the ‘boerie bash’ street party between Bodge, Frost Brothers and Brian Bruce’s museum, and at our annual Christmas Prawn Braai at the Angling Club on the 12th December. For next year, a few places remain available for the Cape Centres gathering over the April/May weekend in Cradock. Border Centre is famous for its parties and entertainment and this will be a most worthwhile outing – please join us if you have not already booked. For those who have forgotten what happened here in May, Brian Woodhams’ story about our indaba in the July edition of Safety Fast is well worth a read. South Cape is entitled to hold its head high! Our Eastern Cape tour was enjoyed by all and is described elsewhere in this newsletter. You will have seen the correspondence about the Club’s charity donation for 2014. Following a meeting with ePap volunteers who knew about the informal school for the deaf in Hornlee, a huge need was recognised for what our committee felt was a very worthwhile cause. A disused building on municipal premises has been identified for the school classroom and provided the municipality will guarantee security of tenure, it is our intention to sponsor the refurbishment of the building. Substantial further cash donations have been offered on the same condition which will assist in providing a stipend for the teacher, a deaf lady who is partly trained. Other offered benefits include an audiologist’s services and help with the purchase of school furniture. EPap is able to help with financial assistance for the continuation of the teacher’s training. There is no doubt in our minds that this is a most worthwhile cause to support and we hope that the municipality will provide the required guarantees in the near future. Our hardworking secretary is about to start the Fairest Cape rally on one of his Nortons – Tony, we wish you well and safe riding. Enjoy your MGs and drive safely. Bruce ----------------------------ooo00ooo--------------------------- PAST EVENTS Breakfast at Zuccini’s 26th October, - a good spot in fine weather, enjoyed by a good crowd.

October 2014 MG SC Eastern Cape Tour Thirty-two participants set off on a cloudy, windy Monday morning in 11 MGs (including two TCs), an Aston, a Porsche, a Morgan, a Cooper Healey, a Nissan and a Honda. A cryptic treasure hunt gave them more than the route to think about on their way to Le Chameleon in Humansdorp where coffee and cakes were enjoyed. We were then given an on-site, informative talk by the manager of the Jeffrey’s Bay Wind Farm.

one blade of a wind farm windmill measuring 49m in length and dwarfing some of our cars

A supposedly light lunch (some of the dishes were decidedly ‘heavy’!) at Crossways punctuated the balance of the drive to Port Alfred. We spent the next three nights at the Halyards Hotel having dinner there the first night. On Tuesday, we were taken up the river by boat to the Mansfield game park where a short walk was followed by a braai. On returning to base, some went to a mohair ‘workshop’ and learned about the treatment and knitting of this wool. A group photograph was then taken in front of the local brewery before we drove to Guido’s on the beachfront for a quiz evening and supper. Wednesday was Bathurst’s day. We were given a chat about the history of the area at the Toposcope and then spent time at the Agricultural Museum which contained many items of historical interest relating to the early settlers.

An hour or two of free time allowed participants to wander around the village seeing other attractions including the two historic churches. After lunch at “The Pig”, we visited the 43rd Air School where at any one time, 320 students are learning to fly or become air traffic controllers. The simulators and their workshops were of great interest, the facilities for rebuilding MGs being most impressive!

Page 4: NEWSLETTER No 11/14 NOVEMBER 2014 - MG Car Club … Newsletter 11.14.pdf · NEWSLETTER No 11/14 NOVEMBER 2014 ... for a quiz evening and supper. Wednesday was Bathurst’s day

Dave Hawkins then kindly hosted us at his Albany Motor Museum before we assembled at the brewery for a beer tasting, a talk about Port Alfred in bygone times and a delicious dinner.

Thursday morning saw us begin our return journey, pausing at the new Coega Harbour for a short tour of the facility. The security breathalyser at the gate surprisingly showed “No alcohol” on the breath of all those tested, testimony to either the metabolism of those who kept the barmaid working until all hours the previous night or to the incompetence of the operators. Perhaps the latter was more relevant! Lunch in Port Elizabeth was followed by a visit to the aquarium for a seal and penguin show and a talk about P E’s history in their museum. Dinner and ‘prize giving’ was held at Chapman’s Hotel where we overnighted. Despite being ‘fined’ for a fuel pump malfunction that occasionally delayed their progress, Tony and Lorna were the recipients of the treasure hunt prize and the ‘red team’, the overall prize winners. On Friday, we called in at the Bellingham and Smith cricket bat factory at Thornhill where we received a most interesting talk and tour showing us how cricket bats were made.

At Bob Hunt’s instigation, a hat was passed round and enough was collected to purchase (with considerable ‘discount’) three bats which will be donated to the Knysna Sports School from the tour group. Another detour to Le Chameleon was the final stop before we headed for home. (With thanks to Cedric Parker for the pictures)

---------------------------------ooo00ooo--------------------------------- MAINTAINING THE BREED. SAVVA Technical Tip 90 – Refurbishing Bakelite Many cars from the late 1940’s and into the 60’s have Bakelite components; especially dash board and window trim items. Unfortunately, over the years Bakelite takes on a dull unhappy appearance. The question is how do we refurbish it without damaging the original lustre (antique dealers call it patina). I had this problem and was given the following advice from a restorer of early radios. You may recall radio cabinets from the 30’s and early 40’s were made of wood then from the 40’s into the 50’s were made of Bakelite. Bakelite was subsequently replaced by more modern plastic. Incidentally, Bakelite radios, telephones etc have become highly collectable. Bakelite is a brittle product and if broken extremely difficult, if not impossible to repair. Here is what I was told to do – Firstly, clean all the old junk off by washing with a good solvent like Handy Andy. Then using water, lightly sand it down with a very fine water (flatting) paper. I used 1200 then 1800. Once the old dry powdery surface is removed, dry it and polish it with good old Nugget shoe polish. You may have to repeat the polishing sequence a few times as the polish is initially absorbed into the Bakelite. Buff with a soft cloth and Walla a really nice original looking finish.

VAN DER MERWE

Van der Merwe and his date, Saartjie were parked on a back road some distance from Grabouw, doing what boys and girls do on back roads some distance from Grabouw. Things were getting hot and heavy when Saartjie stopped Van der Merwe

"I really should have mentioned this earlier, but I'm actually a hooker and I charge R120 for $ex," she said. Van der Merwe just looked at her for a couple of seconds, but then reluctantly paid her, and they went on to have mind blowing $ex for the next hour.

After they were done, and had smoked a cigarette, Van der Merwe just sat in the driver's seat looking out the window. "Why aren't we going anywhere?" asked Saartjie Well.........,Van der Merwe replied with a grin on his face,

"I should have mentioned this before, but I'm actually a Taxi Driver and the fare back to Grabouw is R130 "

So…..Van turns to his wife in bed and says “Did you know its National Orgasm Day ?” “Oh what a pity” she smiled, “right in the middle of National Headache week” -------------------------------ooo00ooo--------------------------------
