Yinnar South Primary School has started 2015 strongly. We have six new students and we are already receiving new prep enrolments for 2016. Most of our students are Prep to Grade Three and with stable growth anticipated over the
next few years the future of the school is looking very bright. Our ‘Stages not Ages’, developmental approach to teaching allows us to maximise every child’s learning opportunities. Every student is encouraged to strive to achieve their personal best. We value the holistic development of our learning community and strongly believe happy, engaged, curious children learn best. If you would like to visit us to see our
personalised approach to teaching and
learning, please call the school on 5169 1540
(Katy Grandin – Principal) to book your school
tour.
For parents with young children you might like
to come along to Playgroup on a Friday
Morning, 9.30 – 11.30. Please call the school
for more information.
GECC Multicultural Festival Our students were invited to perform at the Gippsland Ethnic Communities Council Multicultural Festival last week. They sang three songs in Mandarin (Chinese). It was a fantastic experience for all and amazing to see our preps up on the stage with the older students. They learn languages so quickly.
The students enjoyed meeting the amazing
Indonesian Dancer after the Multicultural
Performance.

Yinnar South Citizen Association Log truck update Hancock Plantations plan to transport more timber through Yinnar South, commencing from mid April 2015, for approximately 4 to 5 weeks. The plantation to be harvested is located south of Jumbuk hall. The empty trucks will travel to the site via Junction and Jumbuk Roads. Loaded trucks will travel through Yinnar South via Vaggs Creek Track to Upper Middle Creek Road, then along Middle Creek Road to Jumbuk Road. They will then travel north along Jumbuk Road to Monash Way. After this coup has been harvested it is currently planned that the log trucks will cease for approximately 5 to 6 months before more timber is transported through Yinnar South. Hancock plantations will advise residents living along the route and the Yinnar South Primary school before timber traffic commences. The timber trucks are not to travel along Middle Creek and Jumbuk Roads during school bus pick up and drop off times, or during foggy conditions. Please keep yourselves and our community safe and drive extra carefully while we are sharing our roads with the logging traffic. If you have any further questions about the planned harvest you can contact Mark Cowell of HVP Plantations on 0428 513 543. Norm Albutt Yinnar South Citizens Association 51691778

Bizzy Bees held every second and fourth Saturday of the month from 1.00pm. Join us to garden and yak. You don't have to be really active, as there are lighter jobs to do as well. The Bizzy Bees include a shared afternoon tea where we meet, chat and share any excess produce from the garden or our home gardens. It's a fun and learning time with all ages welcome. Monthly meetings are generally held on the first Saturday of the month, at 3.30pm in the undercover area, out the back of ARC. Prior to this new members can have an induction into the garden.

Deppeler’s Weather Rainfall for the year ended 31
st December
2014 was another year of below average rainfall.
Luckily we had wet June and July months, because every month since then has been below average.

Wettest 24 hour recording for the year was 24mm on June 30
th.
Wettest month was June with 105.25mm. Driest month was February with 21.25mm.

LANDCARE NEWS
Volunteers contributed to our successful 2014 Maple Massacre at Budgeree Bush Reserve.
Our final activities for 2014 were our Maple Massacre at Budgeree Bush Reserve and our end of year dinner at Yinnar Hotel. After we finished at Budgeree, the contractor funded by our War on Weeds grant, came in to stem inject larger maples on the steep slopes near the creek and to spray blackberry and tutsan which had been emerging in areas getting more light since we cleared the maples. Our 2015 Maple Massacre is provisionally planned for Saturday November 7. We’ve started this year with planning meetings held in January and February; three new households as members; a new baby for one of our families and some successful submission writing.
Focus on Fauna Yinnar, Yinnar South Landcare Group has been successful in getting funding to support a Focus on Fauna project for 2015. With the aid of a grant to our group from Latrobe Catchment Landcare Network we plan to buy some motion activated and infra-red wildlife cameras to monitor areas of interest; and we are also hoping to source nesting boxes for native fauna at reasonable prices. Introduced pest animals are a threat to native wildlife. Our project aims to increase community capacity to trap cats and myna birds and to assist landholders to control foxes. Rabbits contribute to land degradation and stream erosion and eat native and introduced plants.
We have bought some myna traps which are available for loan by calling Eric on 5169 1553. We expect to hold an information day and possibly a field day on rabbit control soon. Dates for these will be advertised as soon as they can be set.
Exterminate! Exterminate!
might as well be our theme for the year, our Daleks Picnic at Billy’s Creek Reserve on Junction Road on Sunday March 15 was a lot of fun. Everyone except the Daleks turned up. It was a chance to have fun, plan our project, share a meal and welcome our new members. Quoits and boules were popular, but not as popular as Bev’s mulberry tart. Weed Trailer
Our weed spraying trailer has been in use this spring summer; but there is still a lot of ragwort around the district. The best time
to control ragwort with herbicide is in spring when plants are at the “cabbage” stage. If the plants flower, you can cut the flower heads off and bag them for disposal to help prevent further infestations. To hire the trailer ring Marney or Will on 0418 841 295 More native plants available soon Our propagation volunteers at Yinnar South School are getting ready for a productive year. Some plants will be ready to plant out, and new seeds are being collected and started.

LANDCARE cont’ Koala habitat grants South Gippsland Landcare Network and Friends of the Strzelecki Koala have funded a project to enhance koala habitat with the aim of creating a corridor between Boolarra Regional Park and the Morwell National Park. The Boolarra Regional Park is between Limonite Road and Barktown Road, Boolarra South. Our group and some of our members have applied to be part of this project. We expect to know soon whether the applications have been successful. There is information about all of these projects on our website, just put Yinnar, Yinnar South Landcare into your search engine of choice and you’ll find us. Newly added are a Weed Calendar; information about trapping cats and mynas and on controlling rabbits and foxes. There are also vegetation lists and bird lists for our area. Our next regular meeting will be on April 16 at the Yinnar Primary School at 7.30 p.m. All welcome. Jay Duncan President, Yinnar, Yinnar South Landcare group

Most weeks the program will include games, a devotion and an activity such as craft or cooking. Tea is provided on youth group nights - usually pizza, hot dogs, chicken and chips or something similar. Occasionally we will have special theme nights, movie nights and outings. There is no cost for the program but we do ask for a gold coin donation each week to help with providing craft materials and food. Registration forms need to be filled before children can attend. Yinnar South CFA
Its been a claytons summer with us only have one Total Fire Ban day and manning the station. The fire season was
basically before Christmas with fires in Central and Western Victoria and bad fires in South Australia. Last December the brigade held a BBQ and presentation awards night for those members who had 5 years or more service to the CFA. The awards were present by operations officer Shane Maynard and ex Captain Bruce Mongan. Listed below are members who received awards: 5 years of service: Jo Penny, Peter Flanigan, Gary Williams, Aaron Auld, Peter Broeren, Richard Jones. 10 years of service: James Mongan, James Barry, Simon Rogalski, Stephen James, Pauline Pike. 15 years of service: Dave Irving, Matthew Henshaw. 20 years of service: Charles Twomey, Mark Bruerton. 25 years of service: Wayne Irving, Kevin Pike, Carolyn Deppeler, Richard Henshaw. 30 years of service: Peter Brimblecombe, Bradley Marriot, Edith Heesom, Ronda Drewett, Anne Walker, Annette Deppeler, 35 years of service: Bob Read, Harry Sikkema. 45 years of service: John Drewett. 55 years of service: Edgar Owen, Eric Deppeler and Adrian Walker. Congratulations to all who received these awards and for service to the CFA and your community. Since the open cut fire last February the CFA and the government are forming a new district here in the Latrobe Valley called District 27 meaning the existing brigades in the Morwell Group will have another five brigades join us. They are Moe, Moe south, Newborough, Yallourn Nth, and Westbury. There will also be a name change from Morwell group to another name that has yet to be decided. This is also the same with Traralgon Group having some more brigades joining them and a name change as well. The district will also gain another two new
tankers with larger capacity tanks and have CAFS (Compressed Air Foam System) which can be used for fighting coal fires as well as bush fires. One tanker will be based at Churchill Fire Station and the other at Traralgon South. Unfortunately the Yinnar South Fire Station was broken into in the second week of February. and our generator and two jerry cans of fuel were stolen. The offender, from Heyfield, has now been caught but had broken into other fire station in Gippsland. The chances of getting our gear back is very slim though. In December we had a another new member
join. He is Michael Purbrick and will be
commencing minimum skills training soon. If
you have thought about joining the brigade but
don't know how to go about it give me a ring.

Yinnar & District Australia Day celebrations an outstanding success Approximately 130 people attended and were fed breakfast by the Yinnar & District Lions club after which they were entertained by The BUGS (Boolarra Ukulele Group). The formalities began with the raising of the flag by the 1
st Yinnar Scout Group followed by
Chloe & Thomas Libreri singing the national anthem. Yinnar Primary School Captains of 2014, Elly Walker and Nixon Hall, delivered our Australia Day message. Councillor Darrell White and member for Morwell, Russell Northe, spoke and stressed the importance of youth involvement in our celebrations. Unfortunately there were no nominations for Young Citizen for this year. There were two outstanding nominations for Citizen of the year. Firstly Geoff Stolk who is currently the Captain of the Yinnar CFA, past President of the Yinnar Judo club, Vice President of the Yinnar & District Community Association, past President and secretary of the Yinnar & District Lions club, participator in the kids cancer rallies and an outstanding volunteer worker within the community. The other nominee and Citizen of the Year for 2015 was Tony Lawless. Tony is Driffield CFA Captain, Vice-President of the Yinnar & District Lions club, Yinnar & District Community Association member, past President of the Young Farmers, and is heavily involved with the kids’ cancer rallies, maintenance of the Hazelwood cemetery and the installation of security fencing. Tony was also instrumental in the re-fencing carried out following the 2009 and 2014 fires.
Tony is a hardworking volunteer within the
district and a worthy recipient of this award.
APRIL 5 Working smoke alarms provide vital early warning in the event of a fire. When people are asleep, they can't smell smoke. Smoke alarms are essential to wake people if a fire breaks out. They give occupants early warning and time to evacuate safely.
