We have now passed the “half-way” mark of Term 1 – it doesn’t seem possible! The next five weeks will pass equally quickly with a number of significant days at school, not to mention a three day break over Easter.

Faction Swimming Carnival

I had the good fortune to attend the faction swimming carnival last week and be a part of the exciting atmosphere at the Riverton Leisureplex. What really impressed me was the determination of all the swimmers and their will to per-form proudly for their factions. Congratulations to all competitors for your team spirit! Mr P would like to thank all parents and friends who supported him on the day by time-keeping, judging and reporting. Your involvement is cru-cial to the success of any function such as this.

Special thanks should go to the Lai family for the time you devoted to preparing the recording system and to Mrs Barnwell for supplying us with some great photographs which will be in next week’s Information Update.

Incursions

Please ask your children about today’s incursion, “Kaboom Percussion”. The show was not something to sit and watch – the audience was an integral part of this interactive performance. Featuring a range of traditional and found percus-sion instruments, the children could appreciate how easily they can make music with things in their environment. The cost of today’s incursion was $6.00 per child and will be deducted from your child’s school monies.

As part of our Harmony Day celebrations, Sean Choolburra, an indigenous performer, will entertain us on Monday, 21st March. A cost of $5.00 per child will be incurred and will be deducted from your child’s school monies. If you do not wish your child to be a part of this event, please notify your child’s teacher.

A reminder that this Friday, 11th March the school will hold a Crazy Hair Day to raise funds for the Leukaemia Founda-tion. A gold coin donation from each child participating is requested.

Computer Upgrades at West Leeming

Work began this week on the implementation of an updated computer system, Standard Operating Environment v 4.5. This system which is gradually being installed across all Department schools in WA has a number of significant advantages for staff and from the viewpoint of technical support. There will be some interruptions to our internet usage this week as technicians upgrade cabling and install new servers. I apologise for the inconvenience this will result in.

This week we sadly farewell Mrs Robyne Williams who has been our School Officer since September. It is not Robyne’s wish to leave, nor that of the school; rather the system dictates that a redeployee is appointed to our school. Robyne has been welcoming and helpful at the front desk and we wish her well as she returns to Wirrabirra Primary School.

Mr Doust is currently on sick leave and will not return to work until the start of next term. In his absence, I will be Acting Principal for the next two and a half weeks, after which time Mr Osborne will fill this role. Ms Anne Foster will fill the Deputy Principal position, with Mrs Wendy Ellis teaching in Year 6, S3.

On a more celebratory note, I’d like to congratulate Kayley Richardson on behalf of the school community for her selection in the state calisthenics team. Kaley will be competitng in Adelaide during the July school holidays. What a great achievement!

Replacement Stationery Items

After discussion, the Maths’ Committee decided to take a practical ap-proach in endeavouring to improve our students’ money handling skills. From next week (Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8.30 am until 8.50 am) Year 6 students will be selling basic stationery items near the library.

Children will be encouraged to count out the money they need to pur-chase the item/s and say whether or not they need change. Parents, of course, are allowed to be present to also help their child if necessary.

Please note that we will not have a large amount of change, so please send as close as possible to the correct money.

The Stationery Shop is available for all students, regardless of their

proficiency with money.
