Project “NewWBL: New Models in Work-Based Learning” No 562090-EPP-1-2015-1-SI-EPPKA3-PI-FORWARD Newsletter no1 Why this project? Work based learning has been and still remains today the best method for teaching and learning skills and obtaining skilled workers. WBL helps young people to master not only relevant occupational skills, but also other work related competences, including communication, problem solving, allocation of resources, and dealing with supervisors and of co-workers. WBL combines what young people learn on the job and in the classroom. The key question guiding our project is not whether WBL works, but how it works. We want to understand under what conditions and for which purposes WBL works best. In other words, we want to examine the conditions that contribute to good WBL. The overall purpose of the project is to review WBL approaches from an industry point of view, to determine the financial and legislative framework in which WBL operates, and develop new models for WBL that respond to current and future challenges. NewWBL is Erasmus+ programme K3 activity project implemented by 9 partners from 5 EU countries. The aim of this and the following newsletters is to inform wider audience about our project, its activities and outcomes. Our newsletters could be of interest to VET professionals especially those involved in implementation of Work based learning (WBL). January, 2016

Why this project?

NewWBL is Erasmus+ programme

K3 activity project implemented by 9 partners from 5 EU countries. The aim of this and the following newsletters is to inform wider audience about our project, its activities and outcomes. Our newsletters could be of interest to VET professionals especially those involved in implementation of Work based learning (WBL).

The main project activities include:

- Review WBL schemes in project countries; collect information on regional development strategies, and industries needs and demands (especially SMEs);

- Develop at least three flexible operational models for WBL that respond to different environments and needs;

- Prepare recommendations and guidelines for adoption of new WBL models;

- Disseminate the models outside the partnership to countries implementing WBL.

Partners’ Meeting and Info day in Finland

Kick-off-meeting on December 11-12, 2015 summoned Project partners from Bulgaria, Germany, Finland, Latvia and Slovenia in Rauma, Finland. The meeting was hosted by Länsirannikon Koulutus Oy WinNova - a regional provider of vocational education for young people and adults in South-Western Finland. The aim of the meeting was to get to know each other, discuss WBL issues in partner countries, agree on Project management and implementation procedures; brainstorm ideas for guidelines to conduct stakeholder conferences.

Info day was organized in two parts. During the first part partners learned more about VET system and WBL approach in Finland. Participants had opportunity to see workshops, classrooms and talk to teachers and students. Second part of the Info day was organized in a form of panel discussion. Panellists were WinNova teachers and employer representatives cooperating with the school. Participation of education and labour market representatives in discussion allowed to better understand how school and company communicate and cooperate to support VET students, what is the motivation of employers to provide apprenticeships for students, how companies can influence VET curricula and how professional development is organized for company tutors.

Apart from the project work, the participants had the chance to participate in the guided-tour in old Rauma, which is the largest unified wooden town in the Nordic countries and one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. Rauma is also well known for its co-regional dialect, its long tradition in bobbin lace-making.
