Howzit Midlands! I hope that this rendition of Midlands Matters finds you all fit, phat and flourishing. Firstly, welcome to our youngest new member Jordan McKenzie, congratulations Tarryn & Jason on the birth of your son, may he bring you nothing but joy and yes Sally, Dino & Kelly, I won’t forget you, congratulations and enjoy your grandson/nephew.

Since our last newsletter, we have enjoyed two rallies, the first being at Power Boat Club over the weekend of 13th – 15th October. We have not been to Power Boat for

quite some time and wow they have done a lot to upgrade the ablutions, etc. we had a total of 22 families comprising 4 tents and 18 vans in attendance at this close-by venue. Thank you to the celebrants for the scrumptious snacks. There was unfortunately an accident on Friday evening where Dino slipped on a wet floor and went through the balustrading around the verandah falling about 2m to the ground below. An ambulance was summoned to attend to him and thank goodness he was not too badly hurt, concussion and some serious bruising, it all happens very quickly – he is well on the way to recovery.

All 13 of us at Baynesfield

The last rally, another close-by venue was held at Baynesfield over the weekend of 3rd – 5th November, I must say that I was not very impressed with the condition of the facilities, the pool was green, I was told that the filtration/pump hadn’t been working for 3 months and the tennis court was in a total state of disrepair. It was extremely hot over the weekend and the pool could have been put to good use. We had a disappointingly small turnout of only 13 families, 2 in tents and the rest in vans. Although small, a jolly good time was had by all, Dereck and Anita also celebrated their 75th National Rally at Baynesfield, congratulations and well done, thanks for the great snacks.

It was great to see Kevin at the rally considering the partial foot amputation he underwent lately; glad you are on the road to recovery. See rally reports elsewhere. To all our scholars / students that are still writing exams we wish you all the best, keep up the hard work and you will reap the benefits of your toils - it’s not long till the holidays. Those DCAA members who were lucky enough to attend the DCAA annual rally over the weekend of 17th –

19th November at Karridene Caravan Park, a great rally enjoyed by all. There were 30 vans in attendance, 12 of which were Midlands members, well done Midlands. Our next rally is our “Christmas Rally” which will be held over the weekend of 1st – 3rd December at Bushwillow, hopefully the rain will stay away, don’t forget items for the hamper, his & hers gifts (wrapped in newspaper) and children’s gift if need be. See details elsewhere in this newsletter. We have had a request from Highway Region who are collecting items for the goodie bags for Rally SA 2018 for some assistance, as you can imagine, collecting items for 250 goodie bags is a huge undertaking for one region and since KZN as a province is hosting Rally SA, we all need to pitch in wherever needed. So if you can assist in any way then please drop your contribution off with one of the committee members. You don’t have to contribute 250 of a specific item – all contributions are appreciated. From myself, Rhoda and Maxiene we wish you all a safe and very blessed Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year, for those of you that I won’t see at the Christmas Rally and wherever you are travelling over the Christmas period,

travel safely wherever you go, enjoy time with family and friends, remember the reason for the season and hopefully I will see you at a rally in the New Year. “Life without love is a bird without song. Life without trust is a night without day. Life without faith is a tree without roots. Life without hope is a year without spring. Life without friends is a sun without shade. Life without work is a bloom without fruit”

    -Dr William Arthur Ward-

Cheers for now, safe towing and God willing I’ll see you at Bushwillow for the Christmas Rally

The marshals decided to arrive on Thursday to get their “Ducks in a row”. Ian arrived to park his van and was promptly conned into arranging a load of firewood, which he brought on Friday. Thanks to the others who also brought firewood. Friday morning dawned with ralliers gradually arriving, culminating in the Pellews late afternoon. Two further late arrivals were Darryl and Trish and family, and Charmaine and family on Saturday. The usual thunder and bits of rain were ultimately overshadowed by sunny days, enabling us to go riding, walking and playing volleyball. Following pay parade on Friday evening, much merriment ensued on the verandah. Dino unfortunately suffered a serious fall, which put an immediate damper on the proceedings. The true Midlands Spirit of the Region standing together was immediately evident, with expert medical attention from Glenda, with Rudy, Ian and others assisting and summoning the Howick EMS ambulance. Jean also getting saturated standing by the gate waiting to enable the ambulance quick access to the premises unhindered. Sally followed the ambulance to Howick. Fortunately Dino was discharged the same night after treatment, arriving battered and bruised with a positive attitude as always. We wish him a rapid recovery. This was a wake-up call to all of us that incidents like this occur in the blink of an eye. Modifications to the railing will be effected soon. Saturday was a beautiful day enabling the cycle ride to the nature reserve, and a walk past Dukuduku to be enjoyed by those taking part. A game of volley ball was enjoyed and the dismal Sharks rugby game was watched, followed by the Celebrants Guy and Glynis (new van) and Wally and Glenda (10 provincial rallies) providing super snacks and drinks. This was followed by a bring and braai as usual, which culminated in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Sunday was a quieter day, folks chilling and enjoying the brilliant sunshine. The

peg dab was concluded, results of the quiz announced and the Yeadon family taking both prizes. Friendly circle followed with the usual hilarity. Visitors were welcomed, Sean fined all and sundry and visitor Sharon reported on Kevin’s condition

and requested early written responses from the concerned to enable her to collate the newsletter. A big thanks to all of the Midlands family for your camaraderie this weekend, the Marshals and their helpers for making it happen and to the management of the Power Boat club for all of the improvements to the premises. The next rally at Power Boat club will be November, 2018 when the new driveway will be operational. It was lovely seeing so many grandchildren running around and enjoying themselves, reminding us all of the years gone by.

    Regards to all,

    Lindley.

Friday 3 November, 11 caravans and 2 tents descended upon Baynesfield, completely ignoring the direction of parking marshal, Terry. Nonetheless, we managed to laager in an intimate semi-circle except for Bill and Sheila who decided to opt for more individualistic intimacy, suitably far removed from the closest van. The flag was raised and the rally was underway.

Gathered under the cool and inviting lapa for pay parade and despite some mathematical challenges, funds were all gathered and we settled in for a traditional pub-grub; pie and chips. Once suitably fed and partially watered, the restless (and still thirsty) masses were separated into 4 teams and the pub-quiz got underway. Who would have thought how competitive the usually genteel and accommodating could get?! After the dust and fur had settled, the blood mopped up and the appeals authority (yours truly) had ruled, an overall winning team was announced. Sadly the name the team picked for themselves cannot be published here as I am reliably informed that respectable people i.e. members from other regions, read this news-letter as well. By popular demand, and I suspect in an effort to salve some bruised egos, another impromptu quiz ensued, this time with 2 teams, more subtly called “Team 1” and “Team 2”. Soon enough, “the thirst” replaced the IQ and the usual suspects reveled away into the wee hours. Saturday morning the sun rose (as it is wont to do, but too early for some) and brought with it the promise of another bright and warm day. Walkers walked, cyclists cycled (one managing to cycle and fall, proving once and for all that women can indeed multi-task) and the lazy lazed. Just before lunch, the “hard-core” gamblers gathered in the pub with their R2 coins for a few rounds of Bingo. Preliminary round small-time winners included Ryan, Gail and Dereck, with Dereck again winning the Jackpot prize (nothing suspicious thereK!?!). Runner up was a very enthusiastic and deserving Maxiene who, though winning no money, was awarded epic bragging rights. Once more unto the breach of the lapa, a few enjoyable hours of socializing culminated into the celebration of Dereck and Anita’s 75th National Rally. Dereck slaved all morning to produce 2 bowls of popcorn, allegedly popping each kernel individually, while Anita took on the far easier task of preparing EVERYTHING ELSE!! A truly impressive spread was laid out and enjoyed by all with Kevin especially delighted to learn that he is allowed to eat popcorn. Later, braai fires were lit and hunger pangs appeased (though nobody could be truly hungry after the snacks referenced above), again under the ever-popular lapa. Round 2 of the 75th National was celebrated when Dereck produced a bucket of Dom Pedro for all to share. Though rain was predicted, we awoke to a thankfully dry Sunday morning. The clouds threatened but wisely relented under our collectively intimidating stares. By now I hardly need to mention where friendlies were heldK Gordon was by then so comfortable and relaxed under the lapa that he dropped his friendlies “beverage”. Duly appointed fines-mistress, Anita proceeded to decimate the wallets and purses of every committee member present (except for Billy, though Carol wasn’t so lucky)

amongst others. I believe it is the first time in known human history that Johnny came away completely unscathed. Well done Johnny for not getting caught! Being blamed for the previous night’s quiz “blood-bath”, hand-spotter Chloe was awarded the wooden spoon. With reluctant hearts and sloth-like enthusiasm, it was eventually jacks up and Tally-Ho. Thank you Mr Chairman for the joke:

Two Old Woman Meet In Heaven

SYLVIA: Hi! Wanda. WANDA: Hi! Sylvia. How'd you die? SYLVIA: I froze to death. WANDA: How horrible! SYLVIA: It wasn't so bad. After I quit shaking from the cold, I began to get warm & sleepy, and finally died a peaceful death. What about you? WANDA: I died of a massive heart attack. I suspected that my husband was cheating, so I came home early to catch him in the act. But instead, I found him all by himself in the den watching TV. SYLVIA: So, what happened? WANDA: I was so sure there was another woman there somewhere that I started running all over the house looking. I ran up into the attic and searched, and down into the basement. Then I went through every closet and checked under all the beds. I kept this up until I had looked everywhere, and finally I became so exhausted that I just keeled over with a heart attack and died. SYLVIA: Too bad you didn't look in the freezer -- we'd both still be alive.

Ho ho ho, to all Midlands Members. Wow, it is just so hard to believe the end of the year is around the corner. I actually got a fright, the other day, going to the super market and all the Christmas decorations were on the shelves. We hope all our scholars and students did well in their exams and will make their parents proud. We wish you all an enjoyable and well deserved holiday. Congratulations to Gordon on completing his 7th Amashova Durban Classic Cycle Race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. Our deepest sympathies go to Craig Driemeyer and family on the passing of Janet, our thoughts and prayers are with you during this very trying time. Unfortunately some of our members are still experiencing poor health. Kevin Leonard has been in hospital for a couple of days. The doctors tried to save his foot by amputating his big toe but unfortunately they had to later amputate half of his foot. He is up and about and even joined us at the Baynesfield Rally with his “donkey foot”, as he calls it. Kevin, it was great to see your positive attitude. Sharon, thank you for taking such good care of Kevin and keeping him on a strict diet. ☺ Terry Cowan had a knee replacement. We trust that you have fully recovered from your operation and you’re feeling much better. Johnny Engelbrecht was also admitted at Wembley House for further tests. The doctor has adjusted his medication. Johnny, we hope you are on the mend and we want to see you on the dance floor at the Christmas Rally. ☺ Christine Yeadon is having surgery on her toe on the 22nd November 2017. We wish you a speedy recovery and hope Bernard will take good care of you. Please continue to keep Tessa, Johnny, Ken, Christine and Kevin in your prayers for good health.

Precious Jordan Lex McKenzie was born on the 19th October 2017 and weighed 3.48kgs. It’s Tarryn and Jason McKenzie’s first child and the first grandchild to a very proud grandpa, Dino, granny Sally and making Kelly an aunt. Jordan is also the first great grandchild to Albert and Marion Fryer. Congratulations to the whole family and may little Jordan bring you lots of joy and laughter.

We are thinking of all our members who have loved ones that have passed on. Our thoughts are also with the families with children overseas especially at this time of the year. To all of our members on the road, please take care and come home safely. Wishing you all a pleasant, relaxing holiday and we look forward to seeing you all at the Christmas Rally. 3 – 5 November, Baynesfield RallyK.an utterly enjoyable relaxing and fun weekend. Special thanks to the marshals, Grant & Shelli Williams and Charmaine, Chloe and Ryan Browne for the fun and entertainment. It was AWESOME. Also a big thanks to Dereck and Anita Nefdt for the “heerlike etes” that was provided on the occasion of their 75th National Rally. ThenK from Kevin and me, a heartfelt thank you to our Midlands family for the cards, well wishes and prayers during this very trying time. What started out as a small sore on his right big toe turned into an amputation of half his foot. It became a huge wake-up call for Kevin. I am trying very hard to keep his diet in check and to dress the wound every 2nd day. We did however have a slight scare on Thursday 16 November when he thought the foot was starting to smell again so it was off to Grey’s but thankfully the doctor was happy with the progress he has made, did a bit of cutting away of dead flesh, a good rinse and all was well again. He is due back at Grey’s on the 23rd November where hopefully discussions and the possible return into hospital for the covering and stitching up of the wound will take place. So God willing he will have a closed wound by Christmas. We are also very proud of our little rugby star, Academic Achiever, Brent and the Karate Kids Brent and Kody.

U8 Player of the Year Good Academic Achievement &

They are both due for their belt grading on the 2nd December. Good luck Brent and Kody.

They were both placed first in their respective age groups at a tournament in September. Very proud of them both.

As this is the last newsletter for 2017 on behalf of myself, your Scribe and Kevin we would like to take this opportunity to wish our Midlands Family and Friends a very blessed and peaceful Christmas and a fun filled Prosperous New Year. May 2018 bring lots of love, good health and wealth. May all your dreams and wishes for 2018 come to fruition.

    Cheers for now Sharon
