CAMH EXHBITIONS
RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW: HOUSTON
On View: August 23 – November 30, 2014
With Right Here, Right Now: Houston, the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston showcases artists living
in the city and celebrates our region’s vibrant creative community. Houston has been a lively
breeding ground for artistic innovation for decades now and is increasingly considered a global art
center alongside New York, Los Angeles, London, and more recently, Berlin. The Houston of today is a
globally networked city where a manageable cost of living and affordable studio space allows
innovators to maintain practices at a highly professional level without having to sacrifice international
recognition or an excellent quality of life. Right Here, Right Now: Houston is a dynamic portrait of the
artistic developments taking shape in studios across this city and features solo presentations of work
by Houston-based artists Debra Barrera, Nathaniel Donnett, and Carrie Marie Schneider. It marks the
beginning of an occasional and ongoing series through which the museum will investigate localized
artistic practices.

The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston is pleased to present work by Houston-based artist Robert
Hodge. A musician and visual artist, Hodge has been involved in the city's art scene since the late
1990s. His practice has expanded to include site-specific sculpture that provides communities with a
place to gather and interact. Robert Hodge: Destroy and Rebuild features fifteen paintings from the
past two years, more than half of which were created specifically for this presentation. It is the artist’s
first solo museum exhibition.
ART ON THE LAWN: JOSEPH HAVEL

The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston is pleased to present a new site-specific work by Houston-

created an “endless column” of books. Endless (2013), made from books cast in bronze and resin,
emerges from the centerpiece of the Museum’s lawn, the Ballard Fountain. The column of books,
cast from a stack of Sotheby's auction catalogues among others, stands almost 20 feet high and
gradually transitions from bronze to translucent resin. Join CAMH on Friday, July 19, for the official
debut of Endless during the opening reception for Graphic Design—Now in Production, 7-9PM.

Founded in 2001, Triple Candie is a research-oriented, independent curatorial agency--run by two art
historians--that produces exhibitions about art but largely devoid of it. Its primary purpose since late
2005 has been to explore the possibilities of exhibition-making as a truly alternative, critical practice.
From 2001 to 2010, Triple Candie operated a series of galleries in Harlem. Since 2011, it has been
guest-curating exhibitions for organizations in the United States and Europe.

the Batik method and create their own dyed fabrics to take home with them. Batik dyeing is a
resist process where-in wax is applied to fabric to prevent dye from penetrating the cloth below.
When the wax is lifted after the fabric is dyed, a pattern/design emerges in the negative space.
While all materials will be provided, participants may bring fabrics from home to use during the

THE MENIL COLLECTION EXHIBITION
Experiments with Truth: Gandhi and Images of Nonviolence
Experiments with Truth: Gandhi and Images of Nonviolence is the first international project to explore the
resonance of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s (1867-1948) ethics of non-violence, or “satyagraha,” in the
visual arts. This exhibition presents approximately 130 works spanning several centuries and includes paintings,
drawings, photographs, prints, sculptures, rare books, and films by artists from Africa, the Americas, Asia, and
Europe. The exhibition’s themes echo the expansive humanitarian concerns of the Menil Collection’s founders,
John and Dominique de Menil. Following their example, we aim to create a platform for international
conversation on world-wide issues surrounding human rights, compassion, civil disobedience, and progress
through non-violence.
