OCTOBER 2016 VOL. 38 NO. 2 YORK HERITAGE QUILTERS GUILD NEWS 1 President’s Message In today’s hustle and bustle world, deadlines are a part of our lives. We have work deadlines – whether it’s meeting submission dates for the newsletter here at York Heritage or project timelines in different industries. Bills have to be paid on time, homework has to be done on time, and the list goes onour lives are full of deadlines. One thing that I have noticed is that deadlines are a motivating factor in getting our quilts completed. Lately I have been wondering, what happens when we don’t have deadlines to meet? What if we just had some leisure time in our sewing rooms to work on whatever we felt like? Doesn’t that sound like a dream come true? This happened to me last Saturday, I found myself in my sewing room not quite sure what to do. I did a little organizing of my stash. I straightened up my quilting books, and looked at some UFOs. I thought about which quilt tops I should quilt. I looked at La Passacaglia, a paper- piecing project I am working on, and shuffled through some fabrics for the next blocks. In the end, I didn’t make any progress on anything. For me, deadlines do help me get things accomplished. That is why I am excited about participating in this year’s TGIF Awards. My goal is to choose one of my many UFOs and focus on it until it is completed hopefully earning extra points for completing it in time to enter the Celebration of Quilts show to be held in November 2017! Will this motivate you to get something done? Will this deadline work for you? Will you join me in this challenge? President’s Message In today’s hustle and bustle world, deadlines are a part of our lives. We have work deadlines – whether it’s meeting submission dates for the newsletter here at York Heritage or project timelines in different industries. PROGRAMWe started our new guild year in September with a talk by Elisabeth Bacque on Pioneer Women and Paper Patchwork. The audience enjoyed Elisabeth’s presentation celebrating the achievements of 13 women pioneers in nineteenth and early twentieth century Canada. We have posted a link to a PDF file of her reading list on the website (main page, under “September meeting”).

Our guest speaker for October is Reeze Hanson, a gifted designer and teacher from Kansas. She will share her knowledge of Grandmother’s Flower Garden Quilts.

Mary Pal http://marypaldesigns.com/

Wednesday, November 16 Introduction to Cheesecloth Portraiture

This introductory workshop covers a unique method of manipulating fabric that combines “sculpting” and “painting” with fibres that employs the use of transparency, to teach students how to create effective portraits with cheesecloth/gauze.

Included is a brief overview of how photographs may be adjusted on a computer, tablet or photocopier. Working from a simple photo that Mary provides, you will learn all the skills required to create stunning portraits out of simple cheesecloth. The class covers sculpting, machine appliqué, and methods for finishing and mounting.Students who bring a machine to class can complete the portrait; others can have the portrait ready to complete quickly at home and can experiment with sculpting other shapes in the afternoon.

Scrap Sharing, Across the OceanElizabeth is ambitious! She is making a large hexagon quilt, and she’s seeking fabric donations from quilters all over the world. Scraps for the larger hexies would measure 4.5” x 4.5” and the smaller hexies will be made from 2.5” x 2.5” scraps.

1909 Quilt Query

Our guild received an interesting query from Malcolm Cox in Alberta, regarding a vintage quilt in his possession that he is considering selling.

“It is a white signature quilt with more than 400 signatures all in red; it measures approximately 85” by 68” and is in excellent condition. The centre of the quilt is a large star with ‘Eglinton – Golden Links Mission Circle – 1909’. You may be aware that Eglinton was a small farming village located at what is today the intersection of Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue.”

Malcolm would appreciate any advice regarding who might be interested in this quilt. [email protected] 403-932-2399

Vendor at the October meetingWelcome to Alanna Banks, from Fridays Off Fabric Shop – our vendor for October.

“I plan on bringing lots of single fat quarters and fat quarter bundles as well as scrap packs. I have a lot of modern Halloween and Christmas themed fabrics that I'll be bringing as well in fat quarters. I will also have a few 20-piece FreeSpirit Designer Solids fat quarter bundles and half metre bundles that I curate myself and these include a rainbow of colours. I won't be cutting yardage but I will have bolt ends available with cuts anywhere from a half metre to 2 metres in a variety of prints.”

“My inventory consists of modern quilting fabrics by designers such as Tula Pink, Alison Glass, Cotton and Steel, Art Gallery Fabrics, Anna Maria Horner, Lizzy House, Lotta Jansdotter and more. Lots of bright colours and of course grey, grey and more grey. I also have a good supply of low volume fabrics.”

Alanna will accept cash or credit card payments.

COMMUNITY QUILTING NEWS

Many, many thanks for the numerous quilt sandwiches, quilt tops and completed quilts that were turned in at the CQ table at the September meeting.

The following members have contributed and are to be lauded:For quilt tops: Pat AustinFor completed quilts: Alexandra Syrdiuk (2), Tella Visconti, Helen Fujiki (3 from CQ & 2 from own stash), Martha Huffman, Anne Coukell (2), Bob Gutcher (2), Joy Takahashi, Ana Gandolfi, Joan Lester (1 from own stash), Val Wilson, Daryl Workman, Kim Workman

Please note that when making quilts for CQ, a size of 45" x 60" works best. And, in your favour, it is a friendly size to piece and to quilt!

Good homes and appreciative recipients are found for all of your creations. For instance, NeighbourLink North York has asked us to help 'fill a seasonal hamper " for vulnerable seniors who have little or no support. Thirty comfort quilts and 10 touch blankets will be placed with this volunteer agency.

CQ continues to support Sistering with two sets of quilts (one adult comfort quilt, a child's quilt and a baby quilt) to be raffled at the two Christmas Socials that they host. Imagine that your major Christmas celebration was at this drop-in centre. You can understand why this agency is most appreciative of our efforts, allowing them to offer these quilts in a free raffle at both receptions.

We have a small inventory of quilts ready for the Syrian newcomers and refugees. The Canadian government is now stepping up their processing of applicants. Guild members who are part of a sponsoring organization are invited to contact me. Every attempt will be made to give a quilt to each family member.

Sales at the CQ table continue to be brisk. Thanks to all who made purchases this month. We will continue to have Christmas fabric available at bargain basement prices.

YORK HERITAGE T.G.I.F. AWARDSIt’s back ... the York Heritage Quilters Guild Thank Goodness it’s Finished (T.G.I.F.) Awards! This is a fun and friendly competition open to all members of our guild. If you are one of those people who always starts a quilting project, and focuses on it without distractions until it is completed, you may not have a UFO lurking amid your fabric stash. But for the rest of us who are mired in UFOs, here is an incentive to complete one of them!

Extra points to you for having a quilt ready to enter in the Celebration of Quilts XIII show to be held in November 2017! We are hoping to see a lot of new quilts.

Here is the entry criteria and process:• One quilt per member, any size• The quilt must have been started before January

2016• Submit a picture of the quilt in its current,

unfinished stage (maybe a pile of blocks or a pile of patches. Or some appliquéd bits or perhaps a completed top needing binding or quilting)

• Write a brief note explaining why it became a UFO in the first place• Pledge to finish it by sending in the entry form (see page 14) along with the photo• Deadline for pledges/entries- January 31, 2017• Bring your finished quilt to the May 2017 meeting

Completed quilts will be displayed at our annual general meeting in May and those present will vote for viewer’s choice as well as a variety of categories (yet to be revealed). Entries can qualify for more than one category. Winners in each category will receive a York Heritage T.G.I.F. Award.

So, dig out the UFO, photograph it in its current stage and bring it with the entry form to the October, November or January meetings. Alternatively, you may mail your entry to:Donnaleen Vlossak, 4 Tanburn Place, Don Mills, ON M3A 1X5.

You have 6 months to complete your project, and then bask in the admiration (and envy) of your fellow guild members.

Stay tuned for further enticements!

LIBRARY NEWSOur library is located in the kitchen, adjacent to the meeting hall, and it is open from 6 - 6:50 p.m. every meeting. We have purchased 25 new books and/ or videos since April. Our collection is categorized by various subjects and items are colour-coded with appropriate signage on the walls. In total we have approximately 900 books, videos and magazines. If you are wondering whether we have a particular book, just ask the librarian - we will check and advise where you may find it. Have you discovered a new book you that you think others may also be interested in? Let us know and we will endeavour to purchase it for the library.

LIBRARY PROCEDURES

As the kitchen area is small and can get very crowded, please enter the library by the double doors in the meeting room and exit through the door at the other end. There is also an exit sign posted. Hopefully this will enhance the flow through the area.

Your membership card must be shown at all times. Books are to be signed out just in front of the exit door.

Books are signed out for a period of one month only (except over the Christmas period). You are expected to return the borrowed books the following month. If you are unable to return them on time, we expect that you will ask a friend to return them for you, or call a member of the executive, living near you to make arrangements to drop them off to that person. As a last resort, you may call the librarian. That way all our items will be readily available to all guild members.

Patterns attached in a book or magazine may be removed, but please return all pieces. Let us know when returning the item and we will bag everything together for future use. Books needing repair (broken spines or loose pages, etc.) should also be brought to the attention of the helper at the return table as you enter the library.

An item may be renewed for an additional month if no one else has requested it.

Requests for a particular book may be made to the librarian at the meeting or prior to the next meeting by phone.

There are no fines for books returned late, BUT lost books will require remuneration (just like our public libraries). Books these days cost $35 or more. Accidents sometimes happen - just keep us informed of any such incidences.

We are always willing to take donations from our members. They maybe placed into our collection or we may sell them and buy newer books.

LIBRARY TIP: Obtain (or make) a designated book bag. Use it exclusively for YHQG. Take the item out, use it, then return it to the bag and you will be less likely to misplace any of our books. This will also eliminate a call from the librarian.

To reach me, just contact the President and she will put you in touch with me, or you can look me up on the Membership list.
