Friday 13 November 2020 Term 4 Week 5 Dear Parents, Staff & Students Kindi Start 2021 transition program This week we welcomed our 2021 kindergarten students and families into the kindergarten classrooms to assist their transition into big school’. It was lovely to be able to meet the children and have them experience some time in the classrooms. The transition program has been modified this year to comply with the current COVID guidelines; however, the school has produced a selection of short films providing parents/carers with information about our school. These have been shared on the Alfords Point Public School Facebook page. The second Kindi Start Transition session for each group will be held next week. Group B - Monday 16 November 2020 Group A - Thursday 19 November 2020 Parents/Carers are encouraged to place their orders for 2021 uniforms during the transition sessions. Thank you to Kate Davies and Sarah Walker for their efforts in assisting all our new families with their uniform orders. Any orders not collected during transition sessions will be able to be collected from the school office. The school will directly contact those families to arrange collection. Remembrance Day Ceremony Thank you to our student leaders Talia, Jessie, Ali and Elijah who led the school in the Remembrance Day Ceremony at the flagpoles on Wednesday. The area was filled with poppies as a sign of respect and to acknowledge all those who have fought and died in the line of duty to keep us free. Year 6 Farewell The year 6 farewell will be held on Wednesday 16 December 2020 at Club Menai. Information will be sent home to all year 6 families on Monday with details of the event. Presentation Assembly Alfords Point Public School has traditionally celebrated the end of year with a ‘Night Of Celebration’ held at Menai High School. On the night all children participate in a musical followed by the presentation of end of year special awards. Due to the current COVID guidelines we are unfortunately unable to hold our ‘Night Of Celebration’; however, the school will still be holding an end of year assembly to present our end of year awards to the students. Whilst parents/carers will be unable to attend this assembly they will still be able to be part of this special event. The school is currently working out whether we can livestream the assembly or will film it and release it to our families afterwards. We have a number of students who do not have permission to publish and as such need to ensure we maintain their privacy and safety. Information for how the assembly will be shared with families will be provided closer to the date. The presentation assembly will be held on Tuesday 8 December 2020. Contact Details It is very important that the school has up to date contact details for all children. Could you please notify the school if your details have changed so that we can update our system. Your attention to this is appreciated. Classes 2021 Planning has begun for classes in 2021. If you know that your child will not be attending school at Alfords Point Public School next year, could you please contact the office. This will greatly assist us in accurately planning classes for 2021. Staff Development Days This term the last day for both students and teachers is Wednesday 16 December 2020. The school will be closed on Thursday 17 and Friday 18 December. These days are allocated Staff Development Days; however, staff have attended multiple 3 hour sessions of Professional Learning throughout the year so that we are able to finish the term with the students. Jubilee Alfords Point OOSH Vacation Care will be operating on these days. Thank you for your cooperation. P&C Christmas Fundraiser The P&C have organised a gingerbread house Christmas themed fundraiser. The notes for how to order have been sent home to all families. Please place your orders by 29 November 2020. P&C Meeting – Monday 30 November Our final P&C meeting will be held on Monday 30 November at 7pm via zoom. The login details will be emailed to all families. All welcome. Student Leadership Nominations for school captains and vice captains for 2021 closed today Friday 13 November. All children from Kindergarten to Year 5 will vote as well as the staff; however, to ensure transparency and the integrity of the process, staff with student connections will not be part of the voting process. I personally will talk to each nominee about leadership and ask them three questions. What leadership means to them? How would they apply their beliefs about leadership to this school? How would they inspire leadership in others? The nominees have to prepare a speech to be delivered to the rest of the school. In that speech it is important that the candidates include their thoughts about the above questions as well as telling about

Respect & Responsibility, Care & Compassion, Cooperation & Fairness

themselves and their involvement in the school. Our values of respect and responsibility, care and compassion, honesty and integrity, acceptance and friendliness, fairness/cooperation and excellence are important and should be included in that speech. The speeches will be delivered Week 8. Each nominee has also been asked to promote themselves by supplying a photograph of themselves on an A4 sheet of paper with their name and just words to describe the type of person they are. The captain and vice-captain positions in schools are responsible positions but at Alfords Point Public School we encourage all children to be leaders. Below is the timeline for the nomination and voting process. Friday 13 November:- Nominations for captains close at 3.00pm (Week 5) Monday 16 - Friday 20 November:- Nominees are interviewed by Mrs Wein (Week 6) Wednesday 23 November:- Nominees have their A4 election posters ready to be put up on display in the library windows (Week 7) Monday 30 November:- All nominees present their speeches at morning assembly (Week 8) students and teachers vote. Thursday 3 December:- Announcement of the four candidates for school captains and vice captains (Week 8) Tuesday 8 December - Announcement of 2021 school captains and vice captains at presentation assembly. Annette Wein Principal

The SRC cannot believe how quickly this term is flying and all representatives have been working hard to organise some end of year events.

The SRC would like to thank all students who took part in the Christmas Card Competition for Eleni Petinos,. The creative talent of our students can clearly be seen in their artwork. All entries were delivered to her office yesterday.

Next Tuesday 17 November 2020 we will be running 'Sightful Sunglasses Day'. We're excited to see our students wear their 'cool' or 'fancy' sunglasses to school. The SRC will be collecting gold coins and we will be donating them to the Fred Hollows Foundation.

The SRC have also organised a Christmas Mufti Day and instead of donating coins we will be collecting non-perishable food items which will be donating to the Salvation Army to help families in need over this Christmas period. (Food items will be brought to school on this day only).

Congratulations to our Semester 2 SRC for being proactive in helping our school and community. More information about the upcoming events will be available in the upcoming weeks.

Maria Panourgias & Emily Townsend.
