Hi Everyone, Well, we are well and truly off and running now for 2012. Welcome back to all those who have renewed their membership and to the new members that have joined us this year. I’ll say again, what a great thing it is to see new members receiving their first awards and joining in the overall spirit of the club. The rest of us can all remember our first awards and how much these meant at the time. This month has been another busy month for the club, all of the regular events, plus some external competitions the club has been involved in. From March 16 to 18 we ran the photographic section of the Castle Hill Show. William and Robyn Stewart took on the enormous task and along with a team of volunteers from the club set up all the stands and images, organised the judging, manned the exhibition over the three days and then pulled everything down again. The club owes a lot of gratitude to the team for their efforts, which once again shows the dedication of the club members and holds us in good esteem within the community. The results of the show are detailed in another article further on in this issue but I would like to congratulate Charles Mifsud on winning Grand Champion. These sorts of events help us promote the club to the local community, show the work of members, and encourage photography as a hobby. The club also entered the 2012 Glennie Nature Interclub Exhibition hosted by the Merrimack Valley Camera Club North Andover, Massachusetts, USA. Well done to all those that submitted images, and particularly those whose images were selected to represent the club. Thanks to the Competition Committee for their work on selecting the images and getting them entered in the competition. On the 21
st of this month a former club and committee member Lyndel Walsh passed
away after a long battle with cancer our thoughts go out to her family and love ones.

Before I sign off, just a timely reminder that our Annual General Meeting will be held in August. Whilst this seems to be a long way off now, it will come along quick enough. As always, it’s important that the Management Committee and the Social and Competition Sub-committees have sufficient members to share the load and that these members are given the respect they deserve. There is always a need for new ideas and directions and fresh faces. Please consider making yourself available for a position of responsibility at the AGM. Well that’s it for this month, Remember you don’t take a photograph, you make it, Robert Shelberg President, CHRSLPC
Hi Everyone, Our Workshop Night on 10 April will have a real practical component to it. The main presentation will be on Real Estate Photography by Peter Oliver (not the Portrait photographer, a different photographer by the same name). Peter has been conducting Real Estate photography for 3 years. His presentation will include some practical sessions using tethered shooting. After the break Sam Bihancov will conduct a practical session on Low Light Photography. Bring your camera, tripod and a torch along on the night. In a parallel session, Les Harvey will take members through the club Forum and how to use it. Another great night with plenty for all. See you there, Bob Cook Training Coordinator

20 February 2012 Our first weekday outing for 2012 was to Taronga Zoo. What a fantastic day we had, 29 members from our club came along for the day and had a fabulous time exploring. We managed to photograph some gorgeous chimps and gorillas, lions and tigers, birds and elephants, just to name a few. The day started out with the tiger cubs, they are not that small anymore, but still gorgeous and cute. We had the pleasure of a short discussion and tutorial on Macro photography, presented and suggested by Barry Ormond, a great idea and one that encouraged participation from many of our group where we could share knowledge and ideas. Thank you Barry for the inspiration for this exercise. We shared lunch at the zoo’s food court, managed to find tables long enough to seat us all and enjoyed discussion about our mornings activities. This coming outing I am planning to talk about “How to See in Black and White” and what to look for in creating monochrome images. In the coming months we will look at topics relevant to the subject matter of each outing. Our next weekday outing is on Monday 19th Mar. to Rookwood Cemetery and in April on Friday the 20th April, details to be advised shortly. Please check the club reminder notice for details, or e-mail Deanna on [email protected]

We had a decent enough turnout to ten pin bowling; there were 13 of us that rocked up to Castle Hill AMF. Les was the only one with a camera so we all took turns at taking some photos using his camera. For some reason, the flash would go off in my face as soon as I was about to roll the ball to get a strike, putting me off my shot with me ending up with only a couple of pins down. Talk about sabotage. Also, there seems to be some members in the club that are expert at this sport. Whilst I thought getting just over 100 in a game was great, I noticed that there were scores towards and over 200!! We had lunch in the café and competed with what felt like 200 screaming happy children attending birthday parties. Wow, I thought I had a set of lungs. We all had heaps of fun, and once again we have got to know some other members of the club. Check out the photos on our website gallery https://www.chrslphotographyclub.org/club-activities/club-events/ That’s what it’s all about!! Jacci

Well, on this particular morning, my alarm went off at 4am and I know others that went off earlier than mine. Now that is dedication to sunrise photography! 27 of us met down at Whale beach to shoot some pre sunrise photography. I have to ask…. we have had so much rain over the past months, how on earth did it work out that we have absolutely NO clouds on this particular morning?!! We all wandered around on the rocks to find a vantage point suitable to get some great shots. Once set up and ready to go we started trying out what Jason had taught us only a week before on the training night. For me it was a trial and error which for me is experience building. And even though there was no cloud it was great to put into practice what I had been taught in the comfort of others around me. I don’t know about you but traipsing around on rocks in the dark is not something I would do on my own that’s why these outings are so worthwhile. Once the sun popped its head over the horizon, there were quite a few photos taken of members in action, a few of which have been included here. I have decided that it is better for the members if ones of myself are left out……... The joy of being Social Co-ordinator ! Afterwards some of us had brekkie and a chat about all other things photography Check out the photos on our website gallery https://www.chrslphotographyclub.org/club-activities/club-events/ I had such fun…… till next time… Jacci

It’s important that we note the conditions set down for International and National Exhibitions regarding the naming of our images. It is a condition of entering those exhibitions that your images retain the same title for its life.
Do not change the title of an image. Titles must remain the same for an image throughout its exhibition history. It is important that titles stay the same regardless of section or medium entered. To be given a different title, an image must be significantly different from your other images. (Australian Photographic Society)
Each Image must have a unique title. Once an image has been accepted in a PSA Recognized exhibition, that same image, or a like "in camera" or a "reproduction" duplicate of that image: i. May not be re-entered in the same Division Star Ratings Class in that exhibition regardless of media, format, or title ii. May not be retitled for entry in any other PSA Recognized exhibition (Photographic Society of America)
As these rules apply to Nation and International as well as many local Exhibitions we should get into the habit early in our photographic journey. Think carefully about the “Title” you are giving an Image and stick with that title for that Image and never call another image by the same name. -William Stewart AAPS
