Lots of Changes in 2017

After nearly 31 years Nigel & Monique have decided to retire from CRRC. Back 1986 when Monique moved here (Nigel was sunning himself in Australia courtesy of the Royal Navy) on 31st October 1986. 6 cats and 2 rabbits came with me. Rather old

outbuildings and 2 huge glass houses, and a little old house, but over the years things have certainly changed. Now we have a Mother & Baby Unit, sorting areas, Arrival pens, as well as 23 pens for cats or rabbits. The barn contains 30 units for cats or rabbits, Sharon’s garden 11 very exclusive rabbit areas, 30 metal arcs for the rabbits to enjoy the grass, and 12 for the guinea pigs. Of course our wonderful Viv Eadon Lodge which has 51 rooms, isolation, recovery areas, and the veterinary facility. 2 lovely bedrooms that lead into our garden rooms used by our out & abouters and for cats from multi cat homes. We could not have done this without YOUR help, and hope you will continue to support CRRC as you have always done. The Trustees will be putting a new management structure in place to run the day to day operation, and there will be a suitable period of hand over. Monique (Founder) Animal charity hits out at rise in number of ‘skinny pigs’ warning they are hard to look after and suffer because of their breeding

Striking pets descended from lab-grown genetic mutations

Popular among those who suffer from hair allergies

But RSPCA says the breed are difficult to keep healthy and happy

The bald animals must live indoors and need sun cream in summer

The Skinny Pig!

Background:

The Skinny Pig's origins go back to the late 1970s. The breed is the

result of inbreeding in laboratory Guinea Pigs, which produced a genetic mutation that caused offspring to be born with virtually no hair. These

animals were very unhealthy and had short life expectancies. But once in

the hands of capable breeders, they were bred to healthier Guinea Pigs, and the health of the fledgling breed improved. They also developed a

variety of colours and patterns. Description:

The Skinny Pig has almost no hair on most of its body. The only

exceptions are usually the nose and feet. Some have a small amount of

hair in other areas such as the rump and shoulders. Its skin is somewhat wrinkled.

Colour differences:

The Skinny pig can display any of the basic colours and patterns of the

Guinea pig. This breed is not recognized by the ACBA or ARBA, so there is

no set standard for colouring.

WHAT IS IT? Fly Strike! Caused by relatives of the green bottle fly and the green bottle itself, laying eggs on rabbits. What makes them want to target rabbits is any dampness of fur, urine or faeces but also the scent of a rabbits glands. The primarily lay their eggs on or around a rabbits rear end, which then hatch into maggots within a matter of hours. With any living creature they then need to feast, their source being the flesh, whilst eating, the maggots wil release dangerous toxins. Fly strike can happen any time of the year so keeping up with daily tasks such as removing soiled bedding , ensuring the rabbit doesn’t have any damp fur and is kept clean will help prevent this. If in the unfortunate event your rabbit does get fly strike, consult your vet immediatley.

Introduce Yourself!

Hello readers new and old!

My name is Lilly and I have just joined this Charity as a Fundraiser/ Volunteer coordinator working for a cause that has a tremendous outcome. I also write the Paws For Thought which give lovely updates on our animals, staff and friends! Whilst being an animal lover myself, I have helped to raise over £6,000 for another charity re-homing animals from Afghanistan whilst helping to supply the correct veterinary equipment they need as well as shelter and food.

THE DAY IN THE LIFE OF… SUSAN ELKINGTON

Sue was born June 1968 in Chichester and has two

brothers and a sister. She is a

vegetarian/vegan. Started at CRRC as a volunteer in 1999, in that same year she went to full time. Starting in the

morning feeding and checking on the animals, she also deals with administrating medication to the animals. As a supervisor, Sue helps with the behaviour of the nervous cats and is a human mum to all the out and abouters. Everyone compliments her on how committed she is and has an expert knowledge on our animals. In her spare time, she writes poems and serenades the animals (if they are lucky!)

Newspaper article

So here at CRRC, we love to receive any news to do with animals whether it is from our rescue or another animal shelter. We found a story in THE TIMES about a cat called Peggy from Boote Home For Cats. Peggy was found one day by a commuter on their way to work, she was covered in oil and giving up her will. This is when she was taken to the rescue only to be discovered that not only was she pregnant but she had had one of her back legs unprofessionally chopped off. An appeal went out to find Peggy’s owner but nothing came about it. A fundraiser at the charity fell in love with Peggy and took her on. She now has a forever loving home where “despite her only weighing 4lbs she manages to ruin all the flowers” It is so nice to see that animals of all backgrounds whether they are unfortunate or not can have a second chance at a happy life and live it out in their forever home!

UPDATES!

Every issue we like to show updates of animals that have been adopted from the rescue centre. Its lovely to hear from the new owners and how happy they both are.

NIKA AND MALIK Hi I'm Andy i took home Nika and Malik on Friday was asked to put some photos on Facebook but I'm not on there so I thought I would email them through. They are both doing really well, Malik likes a lot of fussing and lap sitting and Nika is either asleep or running around like a lunatic attacking every bit of invisible fluff he can find and I couldn't be happier with them. Thanks to Laura H for showing me round and to all of you there.

BENTON Our lovely Benton has settled in beautifully! We love him so much, he is very cuddly, extremely affectionate and just absolutely

amazing!

LANGLEY Just thought you might like an update on Langley (Reggie), he is now going out & about through the cat flap and really enjoying life in the garden. He found it a bit stressful at first but now after just being with us for 7 weeks he is content and relaxed. He is cuddly, playful and a very happy boy, it is lovely to see him out & about.

CRADDOCK & ROISIN Hello everyone at Cat and Rabbit Rescue We would like you all to know that Craddock and Roisin [now Jessie and Jasper] have settled in very well and are getting along well with our existing cat Cosmo. He will sometimes become a ‘grumpy old man’ but has never delivered

anything more than a warning paw! They are loving the freedom of the house and love chasing each other from one end to the other. We are introducing them to the garden this week – it has taken quite a while as they were both so nervous [ and still are really] so we are going at their pace. They are really showing their personalities – Jess is very curious [nosey!] and loving but Jasper, although just as loving, likes to sleep a lot and is still very cautious. thank you all for our ‘babies’. They are truly a part of the family now.

GINGERSNAP & CAMEMBERT “Sadly for my rabbit, Ginger, her friend, Pete, died. He was a much older rabbit than her. Ginger is about 6 years old and I got her from the Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre for Pete. I noticed my poor rabbit looked lost and lonely in her run and she had lost her bounce. I phoned the Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre and I was pleased to hear they had a rabbit called Camembert, about 7 years old, that may be a friend for my for my rabbit. Ginger is on the bossy side so I wondered if they would get on. The Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre did a grand job of pairing them up. When I got the two rabbits home Camembert settled in straight away and Ginger has got her bounce back.”

Just a few pics to show Materials new home. She has settled in very well and the boys love her. They thought it very funny watching her being chased back to the garden by three pheasants

PIXIE This is Pixie sunbathing and enjoying her time in the garden.

MAREEKA

An update on little 7 month old Owen adopted from CRRC with his new best buddy Fergus (also an adopted rescue pet) enjoying the sunshine and each other’s company. Owen is so loveable and really enjoys climbing and exploring.

I used to live at THE CAT AND RABBIT RESCUE

until my new human mum came and chose

me and took me home with her . I really live

the life now as our house backs on to the

Roman North City walls. Usually on a Sunday if

there is a cricket match on I can been seen

climbing the wall to sit a watch Chichester

play. I am their biggest fan and get very

excited when they win. Sometimes I go and sit

under the hedge and watch the bowls if I have

nothing better to do, but it is a big temptation to run out and jump on the

bowl so I have to contain myself. . When the park closes at night and all

the people have gone home it’s my very own park, so I can go and play

on the swings and slide down the slide and do just whatever I like . I am

probably the luckiest cat in the world as my new mum thinks i am just

wonderful and loves me to bits. Love to you all MILO

Hulky Bear in July

Life at Cat & Rabbit Rescue Centre gets busier for us felines, not sure what the rabbits and guinea pigs do except for a bit of gardening! The main news this month is that Monique & Nigel who set up Cat & Rabbit in 1986 are retiring. So the Trustees have lots to do to ensure all us puss-cats, rabs and guineas are looked after properly.

We have lovely new lady Lilly who is organizing the fund raising and the volunteers to make sure we have lots of money coming in to keep us in the manner to which we are accustomed!!

Lilly with help from Pamela is very busy organizing the Summer Fayre on Sunday 13th August 11-4pm. This is our biggest fund raising event, and we need lots of things in particular bottles for the bottle stall which makes oodles of money, wine is very popular, but any bottles as long as it is in date. If you would like to donate some, please drop it off at our shops (details on www.crrc.co.uk).

They say the countryside is quiet, but the trees full of crows are very noisy making their nests and feeding their young. Their nests are luxurious as they are lined with white fur from Holly & Daisy the 2 rescued ponies.

Must go now as lots of things to do, and need to catch up on my sleep, unbelievably we had a fox come into our garden room the other night, but Lewis, my tabby & white mate chased it away!

The fashion show I told you about last week has been postponed until later in the year. This gives me a chance to practice my cat walk. We will send out the revised date as soon as we can.

I would like to add a huge thanks to Monique and Nigel without them my friends and I would have had nowhere to go. We will miss them.

CAKE SALES FOR CHARITY

Joanne’s daughter Hollie raised some taste buds and money for

our charity, baking and selling her own cakes during every school

term. She has also been bringing donations down to the centre

for the animals, putting a smile on their faces. Thank you very

much Hollie from all us here at the centre.

We are looking for that very special person…

Kf31 & Kf32-15

Hello, nice to meet you. My name is Kf31-15 and I am an all-black female, I am two years old, and this is Kf32 is my white and black sister. We arrived at The Centre back in 2015 as kittens and we soon found a new home but were returned on the 15th February 2017 because are owner had lost her husband and was no longer able to cope with looking after us. I do have a heart murmur which means I take half a tablet once a day but I am literally so good at taking it. I will be part foster and the Centre will supply my medication and will do regular heart scans for my new owners just in case. We are both really sweet girls, I am the friendlier one and I will come straight over to you for some fuss, my sister is a little bit more shy and she will meow until you come to her. We are such cute girls and we deserve to find a new loving home together, we would prefer a relaxed home not with young children. Please ring the Centre for any queries or updates about these two 01243641409

CADY NEEDS A HOME!

Hey everyone. My name is Cady, I am 4 years old and I am a very special cat. I arrived here at The Centre on the 11th November 2016 because my owners found my behaviour to be temperamental and they were expecting a new baby. The truth is I can be a little bit naughty but that's just who I am and I just want to be loved for who I am. I can be very friendly and I do like lots of fuss. However, I also sometimes don't want the fuss or I have had enough. I would love to find a new owner that understands my personality and me and will know me so well that they know how I'm feeling. I would not be suitable to live with children and I'm not keen on other cats but I will make a great addition to someone’s home. Please someone take a chance on me.
